View Full Version : The Tournament of Rock!!! (Nomination thread)
Kodos
10-24-2007, 02:32 PM
I was thinking of doing a Tournament of Rock that would be similar to the Celebrity Hot or Not tournament (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=52369) that I ran a while back, except that the field would be set by a nomination process instead of an initial Rock or Not vote.
Each member of the board is allowed to nominate up to 5 artists/bands/groups that they would like to see in the tournament. Please do not post under multiple names. Please be sure of your selections before you post, as I will not backtrack once I have tallied a nomination post. Each nomination counts for 1 point (no ranked votes). Once we have reached what I deem to be a critical mass of nominations, I will decide on the number of bands in the field (most likely 64), and then grab the top nomination-getters up to that number.
Within reason, I will allow there to be multiple entries for bands like Van Halen (Sammy vs. Dave version).

Those bands are okay. It's mostly supposed to be 'rock' bands, but there is some flexibility, since both the Beasties and Run DMC crossed over at least at little into the arena of rock and roll. Tupac probably wouldn't make the cut though.

Question: If there is a Halen (w/Roth or w/Hagar) why aren't we doing a AC/DC (w/Scott or w/Johnson)? Or any other bands?
Because Van Halen fans seem to fall into very distinctly Roth or Hagar camps. If there is another band with a similar dilemma (like Genesis with Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel), we can divide them too.

I'd almost think we should not split them up. If they had different members, yet kept the same name, then they are still the same band. We should look at the bands as a whole, imo. If any band felt they could play just as well without such and such, then that was their fault to continue. Led Zeppelin, for example, chose to disband after Bonham's death. Perhaps saving themselves from the fall from grace without John.

I'm with you on this one. I can understand Kodos' point but really, just for the point of simplicity we shouldn't be splitting up bands by the members.
For example, from my list, Frank Zappa had several different bands that he put together for various projects and for Zappa fans there are major differences between, for example, the Warren Cucarullo on drums vs the Terry Bozio on drums bands and it's a pretty heated topic.
I'm pretty sure a lot of bands fans would feel the same about their bands. Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson are more examples I can think of off the top of my head where I've heard similar arguments about the various incarnations of the bands.
Now, I guess you could say that the definition of splitting up bands would be casual fans and their perceptions but really, why bother? It just detracts from the contest by adding noise.
If a band wants to be counted twice do what Crosby, Stills and Nash did or what Jefferson Airplane did. :)
