charlotte observer is reporting delhomme signed a 2 year 4 million dollar deal.

While Delhomme is obviously unproven i think its a good gamble on the part of carolina's management. I dont see them giving up a draft pick to trade up in the 1st round now and i believe they still have the cap space to make a fairly serious run at stephen davis if they so choose.

Hopefully things are turning around in carolina!

He's unproven, but he's shown flashes, and he has his head on straight. He is no less proven than anyone Carolina could draft. Good pickup for Carolina. Now, they can spend their draft pick on another position. If he does not pan out, they can cut him next year. If he sets the league on fire next year, Carolina can renegotiate a long term deal in the offseason. And they have leverage with which to bargain Rodney Peete down.

Thank god for Carolina. I had heard that the Cowboys were talking to him, but the last thing that they need is another young, inexperienced QB. I don't know who we need to go after, but Mr Delhomme certainly wasn't the answer.

I think it's an ok signing but I wouldn't expect too much out of him. That team is in a sorry state offensively so I suppose anything helps...

I think this is a very very good signing by Carolina, I am a Saints fan and have been a Delhomme fan since he was in college in the town I was from. I think if he is given a chance (which it appears he is) then he could be a very good QB. Also, I think the Panthers are now in a good position that if a QB like Ragone or Boller fall to them in the 2nd round they can take him, give him a year or 2 to grow then let him be the guy if Delhomme does not work out.

I agree. I think this means Carolina should take a QB in round 2 or 3, rather than trading up to get one of the top 2. Maybe Chris Simms will fall to them.

Carolina can't keep taking QBs. If they really thought they'd get a good one in lower rounds then why sign Delhomme? Wouldn't you save money, bring back Peete and groom a replacement?

My guess is they are trying to

1. maintain depth. two passable starters now.
2. improve the starting QB (Delhomme potentially)

this would leave them in a good position to draft a QB to make #3. I think they could probably even land a good QB early in round 3. I'm sure they'd rather have a rookie than Weinke.

If that's the case I say dump Peete, draft a guy and take your chances. You can't afford to pay Delhommme 2mil and Peete 2 mil...

More simply; Peete, Delhomme, and Weinke all suck...draft someone...

Doug5984

I think the reason they probably resigned Peete was to protect themselves if Delhomme really plays bad during training camp and preseason, and also in case no one falls to them in the 2nd round.

That's quite a little 2 million dollar gamble there...

Delhomme is one of the more overhyped free agents this year...

uhhhh.... why?

How many teams in this league pay just their starter more than the 4 million these two are recieving combined? So assuming they draft someone in round 2 or 3, that means a rookie making little more than league minimum. So a maximum of 5 million for all 3 QB's... why can't they afford that?

rkmsuf
03-05-2003, 02:50 PM
Because they suck and already have Weinke and Fasani on the books...

I havn't seen the exact #s of the contracts but I would assume that they are not both getting $2 million this year, it would seem logical to backload both contracts and cut one after this season.

they both have minimal signing bonus money, so they can cut them without real consequence...

Peete's is a 3 year deal with 1 mill base salary each year. the other million was a 500 grand roster bonus this year, and a 500 k signing bonus. so his cap numbers (before incentives) will be

2003: 1.67
2004: 1.17
2005: 1.17

Peete's contract would be very friendly to a cut next year. They'll only have 340 grand or so in "dead money."

Delhomme's terms are unknwon at this point but i would expect the signing bonus to be about 1.5 million, and the base salaries to be maybe 750 and then 1.75, or something like that.

So he's probably about 1.5 million this year, and 2.5 million next year.

rkmsuf--just curious, how can you be so sure that Delhomme is going to suck? He might very well suck, or he might be passable, or he might be really good. The guy hasn't really had a chance to play for anyone to find out. Why do you have such a definite opinion on him? From where are you getting your information?

rkmsuf
03-05-2003, 03:23 PM
I don't have a definate opinion...more of a guess.

I originally said it was an ok signing...my issue is I probably wouldn't bring Peete back...that's a total dead end. If you sign Delhomme give him and whatever rookie you sign the keys and go from there...

but what if Delhomme blows? why not have a guy who did thoroughly "ok" in the offense last year backing him up? When the two of them combined make less than most starters - i think Delhomme, Peete, and a rookie make a ton of sense.

because if Delhomme blows you need to finish 3-13 in order to correct the problem...

oh, that's right. good quarterbacks only come from top 3 picks. Picking a QB in the second or third round this year couldn't possibly help things.

Good point...we'll see what happens...

The buzz is that they are keeping Peete for his clubhouse presence as much as anything else. Granted my eyes are tainted because im a fan but i hope Delhomme gives us an immediate upgrade on the field and Peete will be there to help the maturing process of delhomme and whoever the 3rd qb turns out to be.

Personally im very happy with the Delhomme signing. Kordell Stewart and Jake Plummer were the other two names being mentioned and id rather have Delhomme signed than seeing big money tied up into either of those guys.

I had read Fasani was cut, and Weinke is about to be in the same boat.

maybe he still has some eligibility at FSU, lord knows they've had quarterback woes lately.

Weinke is old. He's endured enough years, he's on his way out. The players are getting younger and he is losing a step. These will probably be old Weinke's last days.

Waitttt..... Weinke's only a 2 year pro??

Chris Weinke will be 31 before the season begins!

If Carolina releases him, I wonder if he'll be picked up by someone else?

The question now is:

Will Delhomme be a new Jay Fiedler (or even a Kurt Warner), or just another Jim Kubiak or Spergon Wynn?

rkmsuf

Is being a Jay Fiedler a compliment?

Fiedler has won a few games in 3 years. The Panthers should be so lucky.

He actually has an amazingly good winning percentage. Ray Lucas has lost a fair amount of games for the Dolphins.

Man, couldn't this bump have waited after the Panthers win the Super Bowl with Delhomme as MVP?

It would make my statement of Delhomme becoming a Fiedler (or even a Warner) so much better.
I guess Delhomme has surpassed Fiedler on the most succesful Amsterdam Admirals Alumni Quarterbacks, only seeing Warner still in front.

Sorry. I just happened to run into this thread while doing a search for "backload" and "contract" and thought it was rather funny.

When Carolina signed him, Delhomme didn't have any more skins on the wall than Carter did. Delhomme matured a ton over this season, but I don't think any scout in the world can tell you how a guy is going to react to winning the starting job. Many guys can't handle it, but some guys thrive.
