It seems like this year was down for us from last year

We actually had more this year...probably double. But that's only about 30 kids. Funny thing is we live in the burbs with a lot of condos/apartments and there are always a million kids to avoid while driving home every night.

0 so far, and it's 7pm. Then again, it's raining, gusting and barely over freezing outside. :)

Just me at home with the boy now so I took him out. I got 4-5 when we got back, but that was it.

Maybe 10. Way down from the past couple years. I blame the dead animals strewn about the front yard.

Perfect Colorado autumn evening - clear, calm and temps about 40. I took my son out for over an hour (he was a little Buccaneer, of course) and we saw over 50-60 kids going around in our subdivision.

Probably under 30, much better than last year. Taking my Kids out was one of my favorite things to do back in the day....really miss that!

judging by what little is left of the enormous amount of chocolate bars and candies I'd bought, I'd say we saw way over 250, probably close to 300 kids. Our area is very residential and full of new families.

I say I'm basing my evaluation on what's left cause I was out there myself with my two Spider-Man, one black, one standard red, for more than one hour. Was a blast seeing kids walking and actually, pretty much own the area. I walked with a big smile on my face the whole time, looking at my two sons, the older one, now 10, holding his little brother's hand (he will be 4 in January) as they went from the street to the doorsteps. Good times. :)

not very many out here in Arizona...perfect night and weather, but I would guess that it being a Wednesday hurt this year....next year Halloween falls on a Friday so I expect many more kids.

Had about 3 down from 12ish last year. It was a bit colder and windy, but no excuse to miss out on free candy.

we were way down from past years...made it through the whole night on less than 2 bags of candy....it would have been more, but i actually went out this year for my 3 year old's first trick or treating..she was rocket from the little einsteins....my other daughter, whose first birthday is today, was a flower, and got quite a nice little haul herself (which i will be eating for her)

I'm stationed in the UK....There were so many Brits at our base housing (off base)! We ran out of candy in 20 minutes.

To all the Brits with kids....

When the front door light is OFF aka NOT LIT, the person is OUT of candy! So quit ringing my doorbell and beating on my door!

Or, you know, you could put a sign on your door saying you're out of candy... :)

Umm.. no? The light is the universal sign.

We get no kids because of where we live. 35 mph road, no sidewalks, and a shallow neighberhood. I don't buy candy or anything.

In the US, yes. But in a foreign area if kids kept knocking on his door and bothering him, I would have put a sign out here as well.

Down year for us as well. Last year we had a few hundred kids. This year we had under a hundred.

By the time I got home, it was all over, but my wife told me that we only had one kid show up. I still left the light on in case some more kids went by, but apparently, Halloween was closed or something by then.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I don't remember the Halloween trick-or-treating time being scheduled back when I was a kid. In fact, I don't remember hearing about that in New Orleans at all. Apparently, in my current area, there's a time set aside for it. Last night, I think it was from 5:30 to 7:30 in the township surrounding my city. For safety reasons and to make it easier on people at their houses, I think it's good that there are times set aside for it. I'm not complaining. It's just weird to me because before I moved here, it was pretty much a free-for-all. Hell, we used to still have kids coming by on November 1st or 2nd scrounging for leftovers.

So is this "scheduled Halloween" just a new thing that's come up, or is it just for more rural areas, or is it just done in random places?

I was actually offered candy at a couple of the houses that I took my kids to. I thought that was really generous that they were handing it out to the parents too (although I didn't take any.. I figure RendeR and I will be eating most of the kids' candy anyways since they're so young they really shouldn't have much of it).

0, down from a couple of dozen last year.

Wasn't just our house or neighborhood either, streets were virtually empty all night. Odd since there were no new events or anything to draw people away and just a year ago it was dangerous to even try to drive with all of the kids everywhere.

I wonder how much impact a serial rapist/attacker still being on the loose here might have had? I might have figured a little, but not enough to account for the dramatic drop in t-or-t'ers that we actually had.

Best I can tell, it's been a growing trend for the past decade or so (when I first recall seeing it pop up). That seems to be leveling off in the past couple of years but the other trend has been toward having city/community events similar to block parties that take residential neighborhoods out of play in favor of merchants or parks and the like. Residential isn't usually strictly banned or anything, they just fall off the radar when competing with face painting, food, games, etc.

I don't think our area has a set time for trick-or-treating.. at least not that I've heard of. But generally what I recall growing up is that you could expect some of the littler kids showing up around 5pm or so, the bulk of trick-or-treating done between 6 and 8, and then maybe half the houses still having their lights on until 9.

Last night I had to close up at 8 so that I could put the kids to bed. I did hear a couple of knocks on the door despite the fact that I had turned out the light and blown out the candle in the pumpkin. And then this morning when leaving for work I saw that our pumpkin was missing and one was smashed in the road a little ways down.

Same here. Although, I noticed that on my street, there were a couple people just standing in front of their apartment buildings with a bunch of candy. Seemed to take a lot of the fun out of it, which is running from house to house -- kids barely even had to stop to get candy from these people.

Our first Halloween in a house (and in what we thought would be a good neighborhood for it) - we got probably 30 or so, which is 5-10x what we had gotten in our last few places.

It was a beautiful Halloween night in Northern VA, but we still only got about 25 kids during the course of the evening.

I'm not sure how many we got, but we ran out of candy after a couple of hours. So more than we were expecting. My 1 1/2 year old was Buzz Lightyear and hit a few houses. He was more interested in running into people's houses than the candy though. The best costume of the night was a little girl who was dressed up as Snoopy's dog house with Snoopy asleep on the roof. It was huge, she couldn't even turn around, but it was really well done.
