No thread yet?

Vinny Testaverde starts in Carolina. Carolina still sucks, trails 7-0. They did knock Harrington out for a play.

You know, Chatman isn't too shabby. Lemon is ok too. This may be one of our few chances to win this year. I'm only waiting for a Cameron Blunder to ruin this one.

I keep finding people who ask that same question about the Dolphins

Panthers go for a 4th and one at the Atlanta 20, Testaverde throws a lob to Steve Smith who makes a good catch, but the DB knocks it out of his hands around the 2 yard line and out of the end zone... touchback, Atlanta ball. Bleh. Watching Carolina is just depressing as hell.

larrymcg421
11-11-2007, 12:54 PM
By the way, I've never really liked the touchback rule. I don't like how a simple bounce of the ball can make such a dramatic difference (either at the 1 inch line or into the end zone for a touchback). I think offensive fumbles that go out of bounds in the end zone should be placed at the 1 with the offense retaining possession.

Brett Favre plays the game like I play Madden. Can't quite remember where the "throw it away" button is and really hate taking sacks. Then complain about too many interceptions in the game :)

Ken Lucas with a fumble recovery return for a touchdown, 7-7 tie game with Atlanta now.

The Packers are rushing very effectively on the Vikings tough run defense. Favre has been off on a few throws, but the Vikings are so terrible on offense it doesn't matter. The Vikings defense will continue to wear down because Bollinger can't complete a pass! They should just hand it to Peterson every down. Great game by Ryan Grant so far!

Brilliant TO management in the Redskins/Eagles game. Skins up 12-7 (I'm already counting the Eagles out, they look like crap), Skins on the PHI06, 4th and 1. They opt for the FG, but don't get the FG team in there quite in time, and take a TO. Then they proceed to kick a 23-yard FG.

If you've made your mind up that you're going for a FG, why in the blue blazes do you waste a TO here rather than take a 5-yard delay penalty? Seriously, all it would do is make it a 28 yarder.

I dunno, when you have Ted Gimp Jr and Marty Booger as your WRs, I think 4.4 YPA is excellent. We might as well pick up Yatil Green and Todd Pinkston to improve our WR depth.

Pretty pathetic by the Redskins... 6 plays, tons of time off of the clock, if you score a TD you pretty much put the nail in the coffin.

*sigh*... the lack of creativity (running on 1st and 2nd down on both sets of downs) just kills me sometimes.

But the false start was huge - that was a great playcall that just got totally botched.

In the PIT-CLE game, the ref announced that Cleveland was challenging as he walked across the field to the monitor. I'm 100% sure that's the first time I've ever seen a ref speak while not standing in one spot.

I think that we're going to see if Tom Coughlin has really changed, with so many stupid penalties and blown coverages by the Gi-Aint's today (they had the KO return negated, another TD negated and then left Terrell Owens embarassingly open)... the old Coughlin would ruin the team for the rest of the year. And the Lions have to play the Giants next week. Meanwhile, the Packers play the injury riddled and offensively inept Panthers at home. I thought you got the timeout back if you asked for a challenge during the TO.

I used to think that as well, but Jim Nantz actually did a good job of explaining the rule. If you want to challenge a play, you have to challenge it BEFORE you call the timeout. If you call a timeout, you still have a chance to challenge the play, since there hasn't been another snap. However, if you then lose the challenge, you are charged with ANOTHER timeout for the lost challenge, meaning you would lose 2 timeouts on the same play.

As Nantz brought up in the broadcast, if you are contemplating making a challenge, you might as well throw the red flag first, since you'd only lose one timeout at the most. It makes no sense to call timeout to decide if you want to challenge.

SirFozzie

Is Norv Turner the worst head coach in the history of the NFL? And more importantly, why did the Chargers not realise this?

Two horrific challenges on plays that were clearly called correctly, and just generally horrible clock management. Screw Turner and screw AJ Smith for putting the franchise in this position because he was a freaking baby and tried to put one over on Marty. While we are at it, screw whoever is calling the offensive plays, screw Rivers and screw the offensive line.

Grossman is like a more reckless Brett Favre who can't handle snaps.

What the hell is Madden talking about? No way do you go for the end zone here. That is one of the dumbest things I've heard an announcer say in a while.

Seriously. They can win by taking a knee three times and kicking the FG. Madden is so senile nowadays it's sad.

EDIT - not any more.

To be fair, earlier tonight Madden gave us the following:

"It was a little too much, too late"

I don't care though, I like Madden. And I like Paul Maguire. Old football guys aren't supposed to be articulate or make sense.

If you've made your mind up that you're going for a FG, why in the blue blazes do you waste a TO here rather than take a 5-yard delay penalty? Seriously, all it would do is make it a 28 yarder.

I think it might be time for the Colts to get a new kicker. This isn't the first game this year where he has missed an easy field goal.

Yep. Chargers offense is just terrible. What really gets me is Rivers is bad, the receivers are bad, the protection isn't great, and they go away from Tomlinson who even when he's not doing great is averaging four to four and a half YPC. I guess they still think the passing game is good from last year, but it's clearly not. LT is less and less involved in the offense and the passing game is getting worse and worse.

I almost thought for a second there that Jack Trudeau was behind center for the Colts. But then I noticed the Colts were completing some passes so it couldn't possibly be him.

So Peterson has a high grade 2 tear of the Lateral Collateral Ligament in his knee.

They just showed video of Childress on ESPN news saying that maybe(and he stressed maybe) have Peterson put a brace on and play this weekend. Does this guy have a brain? I wouldn't let Peterson near a field until next season rather than risk something worse happening to him.

I think that's actually not that serious an injury, I would expect him to be able to play in a few weeks at worst. But yeah, given Peterson's history you'd want to play it somewhat safe.

Just curious, because I see Peyton Manning do it a lot, but is Philip Rivers not allowed to call an audible? Even Hellen Keller knows that the first play from scrimage for the Chargers is going to be a run by number 21. How can Rivers not see 8 or 9 guys all crowding the line expecting the run and not call an audible for a pass play?

In some coaches' systems, the QB is just not allowed to audible out.

miami_fan

IIRC one of the main reason the Chargers hired Norv Turner was that he essentially put in the offense that they have been running since Rivers has been in the league. If Rivers is not allowed to audible in this system, then that is another strike against Turner.

Completely understandable. I mean, I can understand if the talent just isn't there or something like that. Rivers is by no means an elite QB, but, I think he has the skills to adapt on the fly.

I will not be surprised if the Chargers finish 8-8 this season, unless some changes are made in the play calling.

I agree with you. I mean, EVERYBODY knows they are going to run on first down, if Rivers could call an audible, at the very least, it will start to put doubt in the defense that, 'Hey, they might not be running it."

Just announced on ESPN that Adrian Peterson tore a "minor" ligament in his knee - none of the 3 big ones. The Vikings have said he'll be out at least a week, but it seems like he would be gone longer than that even with a "minor" ligament torn.

Edit: It is the lateral collateral ligament that is torn. Not my area of expertise, but I would be surprised if he isn't out for at least a few weeks.
