NEW YORK -- Ryan Braun won the NL Rookie of the Year award in one of the closest votes, while Dustin Pedroia ran away with the AL honor Monday.

Braun, Milwaukee's slugging third baseman, edged Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki by two points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Pedroia, the little Boston second baseman with the big swing, easily topped Tampa Bay outfielder Delmon Young. Voting was done before Pedroia helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series title.

I am pretty surprised Tulowitzki didn't win, along with his good bat he played Gold Glove caliber defense, while Braun was a total liability in the field. Braun had a great year with the bat though.

Meh. Tulo deserved the award, but...I'm not surprised at the result.

Big stick, lead glove will beat OK stick, gold glove pretty much every time. I think Braun deserved it because it's difficult to quantify how much better Tulowitzki was in the field, but it's easy to see how much Braun blew him away at the plate.

Also, Braun came up May 26th. Possible with those extra months he would have hit 50 HRs which would have made it difficult to believe he wouldn't have won the ROY.

Tulowitzki probably deserved the award, but no one can be suprised Braun won it. It really comes down how much faith you put into the fielding metrics.

*****WARNING STATS BELOW READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*****

Braun had a VORP of 57.2 and an adjusted EQA of .319. The VORP number is ridiculous when you consider he had less than 500 plate apprearances. However, if you look at his WARP3, which factors both offense and defense he had a 4.8

Tulowitzki finished behind Braun and Pence in VORP, but his defense was incredible. Not quite Ozzie Smith good, but only about a notch below. His WARP3 was historically good; 10.8. That number places him among the top 15 rookies since 1890 and very close to the number Pujols put up as a rookie (11.1).

To get to the point, looking at only offense, Braun had a historically good rookie year and Tulowitzki finishes 3rd behind Braun and Pence. Factor in defense, and it comes down to faith in the metrics (specifically fielding runs above average), and Tulowitzki has one of the best rookie seasons of all time and Braun finishes 3rd behind Tulowitzki and Pence.

And I thought reading my Baseball Prospectus subscription was hard to understand...

:)

I kid, I kid.

I think Troy was probably a shade ahead, but I pretty have no faith in BP's defensive stats. MGL, Pinto, or Dewan seem more reliable, if only because they take PbP data into account.

FRAA is definitely a notch below Dewan's fielding bible, which means you have to take WARP3 with a grain of salt, but its pretty much the only all-encompassing stat there is.

What is crazy is just how bad Ryan Braun was defensively. Considering he missed more than a month and he rated far and away the worst among third baseman leads me to believe they could have sent him out there with no glove and he wouldn't have done too much worse.

The difference between Braun and Tulowitzki offensively is absolutely dwarfed by the difference between them defensively.

Braun was such a horribly bad defensive player, you absolutely have to take that into account. He wasn't just bad, he was historically bad, so much so his offensive output is tempered by the liability he was in the field.

Tulowitzki OTOH was a plus both at the plate and in the field.

I don't think it's even close, really. Tulowitzki should have been the ROY.
