View Full Version : Mike and Mike in the Morning Show

Every once in a while we all feel like bitching. Today is that day for me. It's short, here goes:

What is with all of the damn commercials? Seriously? It is RI-DIC-U-LOUS on this show especially and I'm just sick of it. They spend more time away than actually on the air. I cringe when I turn my car on in the morning because I know there's a 50% chance I will hear the same crap commercials over and over again. 50% is way too much and I don't think I'm exagerating much with this show only being on the air 50% of the time.

Is this simply because they are televised (for some reason...who watches that?)? Totally lame.

I hear ya Mike. Although I don't listen to their show, there are waaaay too many commercials on some of these syndicated shows. I used to listen to The Jim Rome Show and just got irritated with all the penis enlargement commercials and whatnot.

Less penis enlargement, more Rome please.

I love Jim Rome! I also agree with Wade about M and M being a crapfest. I'm a Detroit transplant living in Chicago so it's either that or listening to 1,000 reasons and excuses why the Lions beat the Bears. My options are very limited.

BTW, do Chicago Bear fans realize it's not their QB OR their RB that's the problem? Do they even watch the games? Enough said.

Rock on, same here! I just took a new job a couple months ago with an hour long commute, while before I was taking the el and listening to music. I alternate between 1000 and 670, and I've noticed it's a lot harder to avoid commercials in the morning than in the afternoon. I like Mike and Mike because it has less screaming than most other sports shows, but their act gets pretty tiresome. I gotta get some books on CD from the library.

In general, commercial radio is loaded with ads, but Rome isn't nearly as bad as ESPN radio. ESPN radio is genuinely 50% commercials. I would say Rome is maybe 40%, with a lot of that coming on those long breaks at the top of the hour. ESPN is absolutely out of control, though -- top of the hour or not, you're looking at every break being 8-10 minutes long. A bit of that will be your generic scores/news updates but I'm not counting that as actual programming.

Love Steve Czaban. He does the Rome show better than Rome.

Why the hell Jim always has Skip Bayless or Andrew Siciliano filling in for him is beyond me.

I'd love to see more quality sports radio on the satellite companies. Right now I can't listen to sports radio, it's just too frusterating. Even the local stations are 50% commercials these days. I used to listen to Howard Stern a bit in the day and hated how his show was half commercials. When he switched to Sirius, radio became enjoyable again for me.

I'd be more than willing to fork over a monthly fee for commercial free radio.

Sirius is a godsend - I look forward to my commute every day.

Sure, Stern has some commercials, (maybe 5 minutes an hour), but it's two channels, and between that and ESPN, there's always something on, just in that "big 3" of what I spend most of my time listening to.

Heh - I used to feel the same way, but his Sports Reporters show with Andy Pollin is excellent. He works best with a foil, but his morning show is getting a lot better.

I just can't listen to Mike and Mike anymore. The preening bullshit is just beyond the pale. Golic argues like Schmidty and Greenberg has a bigger ego than Hell Atlantic...

I refuse to listen because they won't even mention hockey and talk about freakin baseball all the time.

Plus I love how Golic would fawn all over ND when they were good but now that they stink he won't even mention them. Golic is good when talking football, but his knowledge other than that is average at best.

Agreed. Czabe and Andy have been together so long, though, that they occasionally sound like an old married couple. Andy also does a great job keeping the show moving, and that is one of Czaban's main weaknesses on his morning show.

I swear, Rome cracks me up... what a hypocrite this guy is. He just finished interviewing some NASCAR guy and I remembered when he hated that stuff... with a mad passion! Almost as much as he currently hates soccer... or did he change his mind? I can't wait 'til his kid shows an interest in it. It would be the first time The Karma actually works! LOL :D

It's too bad NPR programming sucks on weekends (when I actually have the opportunity to listen). Mrs. Klinglerware has it on when we are in the car on weekend trips/errands/and so forth. "Prairie Home Companion" makes Mr. Klinglerware whimper in agony.

Amen, brother. I don't so much whimper, as rage. I can tolerate all of about 30 seconds of that show before it drives me to the brink of madness...

Yeah, but Car Talk is pretty cool.

Most definitely. I loves me some Car Talk.

As far as weekend programming, unless you catch one of Frank DeFord's short monologues on Wednesday mornings, NPR really isn't much of an option for those carving sports talk radio.

I pretty much have a steady rotation of Detroit sports talk radio (though just last week they cancelled the local morning guys, which was sad), the local "shock jock" types, and NPR.

Don't want to hear the commercials, then subscibe to the podcast. It trims out the boring parts of the show as well as the commercials, so you end up with some better than decent entertainment. I usually do this with Mike and MIke, PTI (my favorite) and now Mike Tirico. And DC and I differ on Jim Rome. I can't stand the show and she goes back and forth on it.

Sadly, I have not yet mastered podcast subscribing technology. I tried to subsrcibe to a podcast once, couldn't do it, and haven't bothered to go back.

I really should, however, because I am getting dangerously close to finishing the audio book on my ipod. Once it's done, I fear I will never exercise, clean the house, or walk the dog again...

I listen to Rome now because of lack of better options. He's gotten so soft over the years, though, that he spends most of his show gushing over whoever the interview for that day was.

A handful of the callers are really the only reason to even bother listening to the show now.

Yeah, Rome is actually pretty terrible. Not just the gushing over interviews, but if you ever actually just sit down and listen to a full show, you will hear him recite the same take about a dozen times. It's unbelievable how much he repeats himself. Factor in all the pauses and you really have to wonder how he ever got to be successful on radio. It can really be painful. That said, the e-mails and certain callers can be genuinely hilarious and are why I listen occasionally.

The first time I heard his show, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

He does an interview, and then litterally reads emails from listeners for several minutes about how great the interview was.

It's insanity if you think about it in any other context. Imagine Saturday Night Live doing a sketch, and then spending 5 minutes taking feedback before going on to the next one. Or Picture this on Good Morning America or The Daily Show. How does Rome get away with this as entertainment?

NPR is the only radio station in Wyoming worth listening to. But I don't necessarily mean that as a good thing. Without it, I'd play my MP3 player even more than I do on my commute, but....it's nice to break up the drive, especially in the evenings on the way home.
