Anyone else listen to the Sean Hannity Show today? It was in front of a crowd today. Not sure if it was live or a repeat but Hannity says BBC and other news agencies say Bin Laden has been captured!!

I just heard the same thing on my local radio news too. I've checked the BBC website and haven't found anything but there are a lot of rumors right now that the U.S. has Bin Laden in custody. Coincidentally, Bush scheduled a national press conference tonight. The Hannity Show website says the press conference is just another Iraq speech.

I guess it's a false alarm because the Bush Administration just announced the rumors aren't true. Oh well. :( Would have been great to see him in custody. Of course, they may actually have him and not want to tell anyone yet so they can interrogate him and bust cells in the US. That's what they were going to do with the 'mastermind' in Pakistan but the Pakistanis wouldn't shut up. (and probably did it on purpose because some of them are for Bin Laden)

From Drudge Report:
White House dismisses rumours of Bin Laden's arrest
Thu Mar 06 2003 16:34:10 ET
Washington (dpa) - The White House on Thursday dismissed as ``false rumour'' a report that U.S. President George Bush would announce the arrest of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden at a rare press conference later in the evening.
``I think it's just a rumour,'' said a White House spokesman. The White House made a surprise announcement earlier in the day that Bush would give a rare news conference at 8 p.m. (0100 GMT), which prompted speculation about the reason for the press event.
The White House emphasized however that the president would not release any important new facts. At the center of discussions will be the U.N. Security Council's meeting on Friday, where the newest report from arms inspector Hans Blix is to be delivered, the White House indicated earlier.

Why bother with the news conference if there will be "no new announcements" or "no new intelligence" info?

``I think it's just a rumour,'' said a White House spokesman.
The spokesman just thinks its a rumor, isn't flat-out denying it. Personally I don't think they've captured him but I wouldn't rule it out.

I would imagine he announces we are going to war...

I agree Airhog.
I think he will announce that a serious air campaign will start soon, with ground troops to follow.
Although it would be huge if Bin Laden was captured.

I would be very surprised if he announces we are going to war, especially with most of the talk today centering around the UK seeking some sort of compromise.

He'll might announce a deadline like 72 hours for complete diarmament. Either way, get to find out now.

This is the eigth televised press conference he's has while in office. It's not an unusual occurence. I'd guess that he and his handlers feel like they need to get in front of the American people and make their case, be seen to be answering the tough questions, etc.
I'd say the odds of a major announcement (bin Laden, war delcarition) are about zero.

It just sounds like he is bulding up to us going to war. He sounds like its inevitable that we will be going to war soon.

It looks like this speech was a response to the people against an Iraq invasion and a warning that the invasion is very close. I thought Bush did a great job, that's one of his best speeches/Q&As I've ever seen. He looks determined as hell. All I know is I'd hate to be in shoes. Watching him walk away from the podium by himself, I can't help but feel for him and the huge burden he carries with the new problems America faces in the 21st century.

A President does not use a press conference to announce we are going to war. Good call digamma and Maple Leafs in understanding what these press conferences are for.

Senator,
Exactly right. If we go to war that announcement will be a Speech directly from the Oval Office. That is how I remember George H.W. Bush doing it in 1991.

I knew there was a reason for electing Senator. Are you planning to run with kodos on the 2004 Hookers and Aliens platform?
