hrm, must be a caching problem, as I just cleared everything, downloaded, and it was at the 'continue free agency' button for me. I'll post a link for a differently named file.

Okay, we need ideas on FAs, you guys are the scouts and coordinators, who do you want?

Neel
03-07-2003, 02:25 PM
I will download the new file when I get home (where the game is), but as far as FA...
I can't see the file yet of course, but if we plan to address a franchise QB with the first pick in the draft, we should look at picking up at least two good OL prospects here, as well as DL and CB if it looks good....

My log in from home is ND not Neel, so I will post more after I look it over.

At the top of my list are my expensive but not top price free agents.

Jake Kolski DE
Michael Johan DT

These guys are cornerstones of the defence. give me your thoughts in regard to all-around talent versus cost on these two.

Other Mid-Low price free agents who I see as statrers:

Samuel Flynn FS
or Martin Coppa FS
William Dowell DE
JR Roupernian DE Maybe full time or designated rusher Take a little later if available.
Troy Shelton DT (super bargain)
Kyle Krone MLB
Russel Geer (Backup MLB)
Peter Beam SLB
Max kondovski WLB
Dominic Ding backup WLB good bargain
Marcus Kuffrey CB
james bailey CB
Ike Adamski SS

Bargain "future potential" URFA 1st yr FA's
these guys should be offered 2 yr contracts with a 10K bonus. If they flop it only costs 10K. Some will make solid backups or possibly starters

trent Boren SS
Ricky Blake FS
bart edmonston DT
Tracy Lee
Wesley bradley
Wade Rosenthiel DT
Warren Carter DE
Louis Forman CB
Bryant Willis CB

Was it two #1 and 3 #2"s

Thoughts please gentlemen

Tasan
03-08-2003, 10:59 PM
Sorry I havn't chimed in yet, I've been out of town and just now got a chance to fire up the laptop.

What we did last time was trade our 1-1 (round 1 pick 1) for the 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, then the 1-2 for the 1-4, 2-4, 3-4, then picked at 4, then traded the 2-2, 3-2, 3-4 for the 1-10, giving us 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and our third, a pretty good haul.

We could try this again, or stay where we are and pick or try something else, I'm open. I gotta install fof4 on the lapop now, update, grab the file, then look at those fas you mentioned.

Shall we hook up today?

ND
03-09-2003, 12:57 PM
Trading down is cool. Multi picks is better for us at this point if we can not land a couple of franchise guys...

I don't mind going heavy of Def. at first. It could give our Offense time to gel.

ND
03-09-2003, 12:58 PM
Tasan, if you can pull off a heavy trade down bounty again such as you listed, that would work great for us.

ND

Okay I will start putting offers on guys a little later today. It will be all the guys listed here, as long as the money is reasonable.

strait8
03-10-2003, 11:35 AM
I like the look of UFRA's listed above. I do not think we can count on them as more than backups. I have found this from personal experience. Sometimes they surprise you but not often.

We should try to define a mid priced vetran at all positions and sign them. This will mean we will probably have to cut some of the expansion draft losers to fit all the draft choices if we trade down.

I did this and ended up with about 14 mil of cap room at the beginning of the season. Our extra draft choices will not add much burden, so we should be ok.

Neel
03-10-2003, 03:08 PM

Hi Tasan:

Here are my choices by position. Of these, 4 are expensive Spano QB Croft WR Johann DT and Koski DE. I think the two defensive guys are the cornerstone of the defensive line, Spano is a two year QB who will steal us a couple of games and Croft looks like a decent receiver to go with the only good expansion player we signed.

Tapley and Crone are also Mid high price as is Perch. I think all are affordable.

In the case of needing two of a position like G or WR we should sign both vets.

The rest are mid priced or down right steals.

QB Damon Spano Christian Daniels

RB Dave Dietz 2) Bryan Hurst

FB Patrick Dillingham 2) Dennis Jolly

TE Kendrick Legge 2) Ron Slezak

WR freddie Croft 2)Mike Nikaido 3) Dante Wood

C Ray Perch, 2) Tony Goldman

G Larry Meecham 2) Jason Heath

T Andre White 2) Chris Ellis

DEFENCE

DE Jake Kolski 2) William Dowell

DT Michael Johann Troy Shelton

MLB Kyle Crone 2) Nick Darnick 3) Willie Whittington

OLB Tim tapley 2) Peter Beam 3) Scott Raspberry

CB Marcus Cuffrey 2) Corey Stephan 3) Bryan Bozarth

S Martin Coppa 2) Cedric Newville 3) Samuel Flynn

I see you are online

Tasan
03-10-2003, 09:05 PM
QB Damon Spano signed with Atlanta in the first week. WR Fred Croft got a better offer from Cincy also, and I upped our initial offer. Several players signed with us in week 1

No defections in week 2, and several more signings by us.

Week 3 saw OLB Tapley consider an offer from Indy, and FB Dillingham consider one from Pittsburgh, I bumped up our offers on both a little.

OLB Tapley signed with detroit in week 4 for just a hair over what we had offered. Punk. Several more players signed with us though, and we had no more defections. I put an offer on OLB Beam.

Week 6 sees OLB Beam consider a SIX year offer from Cincy, which is crazy. We'll adjust our 4 year offer, and find a backup option in case. I backload the offer to Beam to give us some flexibility too. Several more players sign.

Week 7 sees Beam get ANOTHER 6 year offer from the Saints this time. Wow. 2 more players sign with us, leaving us with 3 offers pending, 2 of which are just considering us.

Week 8 is gone and we are down to Beam and CB Bradley considering offers, with Beam still stuck on the Saints crazy offer. Heck guy, stick 'em for those 6 years!

Week 9 passes and now only Beam remains, still stuck on the Saints offer.

Week 10 goes by, and on Saturday night we get a phone call. Its Peter Beam, he says he wants to talk, and he's got a new agent. By midnight, we have our deal. Beam will be tackling players for us this year.

This concludes our current signing stretch. We got everyone we wanted except for QB Spano. There aren't many QBs left out there, so we'll probably roll with who we have right now and maybe a draft pick.

We are at week 11 in the FA process, and have about 22 mil left. I'll take suggestions for further signings, or we can sit on the 58(!) players we have under contract and await the draft, where we will pick up 7-9 more players. I'm already working the phones trying to trade around a bit to see what we can get.

Hi Tasan

Good Job. Too Bad about Spano.

I would do suggest the following. Cut the 7 listed below to take to 51.

Cedric ferguson
TJ herek
Antonio Sedor
Peter Pizr
Terry White
Kevin Wicox
Ed Tyrell

These are all guys we would cut anyway. This will also free more cap space.

We do not have atrue WLB. I would like to take a crack at Max Kondovski who is looking a lot more affordable now. Also Michael Peterson at DT looks like a steal now.

Neel may see a couple more for offence he wants. If so we might have to prune a few more before the draft.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 12:41 PM
We can actually be way over 60 at the draft, we just need to be under 60 by training camp. I do agree though, that there are plenty of easy cuts, most of the guys taken in expansion can go.

strait8
03-11-2003, 01:33 PM
Have you taken free agency any further forward?

Tasan
03-11-2003, 04:27 PM
I was waiting to see if Neel spoke up. I guess not. I'll advance it now.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 04:41 PM
The Turk came and visited 7 players, and now we are at 51. I put offers on TE Marcus Welch, OLB Max Kondovski, and DT Michael Pederson. Welch signed that week, and after considering a 6 year offer from Oakland, Kondovski signed a 3 year deal with us on week 13, along with Pederson. That puts us at 54 players before the draft, and still 19 million under the cap. I'm stopping player signing for now. We'll look at things after the draft and see who's available then.

Tasan

New file is here (http://users3.ev1.net/~davidpr/houston-predraft.zip)

strait8
03-11-2003, 04:50 PM
There is always just scraps available after this firstdraft so we better be sure that we are covered at most positions.

As far as the draft goes our biggest needs are QB, WR CB and OT I think.

What is your take?

Tasan
03-11-2003, 04:54 PM
Okay my favorite target in this draft looks like JaJuan Pressley, RB. He's gonna be a stud to help us get through the tough times. I don't think a good QB will be available if we trade down far.

strait8
03-11-2003, 04:59 PM
I bet both Zumdahl and Ingersoll are available at No.2. Pressley will be available at No.4 possibly as low as N0. 10.

I'd make the first trade and see who carolina picks.

strait8
03-11-2003, 05:00 PM
Do you want to go for one offensive and one defensive player or use the draft to beef up the offence.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 06:07 PM
I think the offense really needs work right now, we could land either a top OT or QB with the #4 pick if we go that low.

strait8
03-11-2003, 06:13 PM
I'm sure thats ok with Neel. So lets go.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:13 PM
We start the draft by dealing our 1-1 to Carolina for the 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, and 4-2. Whew.

There pick:

1. Carolina - Zumdahl, Spencer, QB, Oregon

strait8
03-11-2003, 08:24 PM
I was sure they would go for defence or possibly Roddy (OT).
I have been so wrong,

Great trade 4 for 1. You know Detroit will take Ingersoll so do we trade down again? I say we do

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:32 PM
Should we try to go to 3 or screw over Detroit and go to 4, and Buffalo will take Ingersoll? Either way, we get one of the stud OTs.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:38 PM
Moot point, Detroit won't deal their top 3 picks for it, so we pass on them and go to 4.

Deal to Buffalo:

Houston 1-2 (via Carolina) for Buffalo 1-4, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4

We are really picking up the mid level picks. I think Buffalo really wants a QB because they lost theirs in FA.

strait8
03-11-2003, 08:39 PM
Lets go and make the trade at for 3-1. I really like Brandon Roddy more than Hunt.
Just get enough extrapicks to insure we get a another #1,

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:39 PM
2 and 3:

2. Buffalo - Ingersoll, Robert, QB, Fresno State
3. Detroit - Wirthel, Bernardo, DT, Tennessee

We have our choice of OTs, or some other quality players.

strait8
03-11-2003, 08:43 PM
I like Roddy here and pressley lower. but you are the GM go for it.
I will be offline for about 45 minutes while I go home for dinner.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:46 PM
Yeah I think Roddy will be the pick here, he's just too phenominal to pass on, even though Hunt is Idolized by Fans.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:47 PM
So here we are:

2. Buffalo - Ingersoll, Robert, QB, Fresno State
3. Detroit - Wirthel, Bernardo, DT, Tennessee
4. Houston - Roddy, Brandon, T, Miami, Florida

Tasan
03-11-2003, 08:53 PM
Now that I look at teams to come, I've got a bad feeling about Dallas. They are real weak at RB, with their best RB being a 13 year vet. They will take the 2-2, 2-4, 3-2 and 3-4 to get us to 1-6, but are we definately locked into that RB?

One option would be to just let things go til mid to late 1st, trade in there at a lower price and pick RB Brad Kozempel, if we really want a good RB. Or we can wait and trade with Cincy at 10, they want 2-2, 3-2, 3-4 or 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, 4-4

strait8
03-11-2003, 10:01 PM
I don't like Kozempel. Of the top four backs he is the slowest and has the least power. I like Grzecki better. He defintely should be at 10.
Give up the 2 4th rounders.

Tasan
03-11-2003, 10:33 PM
I think we can probably trade in the high teens (18-19) and get Grzecki. So we definately don't want to spend big to get back into things at #6? I'm fine with that, but I don't see a comment on it.

strait8
03-11-2003, 10:43 PM
Lets trade down again then to maybe #10-14. Can we get more second rounders. I think the quality of the draft drops dramatically after the third round so I think we should trade the two #4's.

Neel
03-12-2003, 11:41 AM
Hey guys, I have to go out of town for a day, but I see things are moving nicely.

I like the trading down your doing, it is good to have more picks...

We could take Kozempel and still be OK at RB for now.

Tasan
03-12-2003, 02:53 PM
okay the offense has spoken, and he likes koz, which i kinda lean towards too.

strait8
03-12-2003, 03:13 PM
Make the choice offensive Guru's

Tasan
03-12-2003, 03:20 PM
Heheheh

Okay, we got a better deal at 1-12, so I traded Arizona our 2-2 (from Carolina), 4-2 (from Carolina), 4-4 (from Buffalo), and the 5-1 for the 1-12. We lose late picks but keep a lot of 2s and 3s, which will be more useful. We picked Koz at 1-12.

5. San Diego - Hunt, Todd, T, Texas
6. Dallas - Pressley, JaJuan, RB, Boston College
7. New Jersey - Jones, Tyreese, DT, Tennessee
8. Kansas City - Armstrong, Kevin, DE, Syracuse
9. Jacksonville - Petrolis, Shawn, DE, North Carolina
10. Cincinnati - Cicci, Simeon, T, Nebraska
11. Indianapolis - Robertson, Edward, DT, Missouri
12. Houston - Kozempel, Brad, RB, UCLA

Tasan
03-12-2003, 03:45 PM
Through the first round:

13. New Orleans - Jones, Ralph, C, Ohio State
14. Tennessee - Colaianne, Michael, T, Colorado
15. New York - Gaden, Steve, T, Ohio State
16. Green Bay - Ensley, Donnell, DT, Northwestern
17. Atlanta - Carter, Kurt, QB, Virginia Tech
18. Washington - Kooiker, Cliff, DE, Southern California
19. Denver - Flynn, Donnie, WR, Florida
20. Seattle - Dean, Jack, DE, Notre Dame
21. Tampa Bay - Mikeska, Ray, RB, Miami, Florida
22. New Jersey - Georgopulos, Adam, CB, Miami, Florida
23. Oakland - Grzecki, Cade, RB, Michigan State
24. Baltimore - Marshall, Victor, T, Akron
25. Miami - Clark, Scott, DT, Wisconsin
26. Philadelphia - Smith, Mark, OLB, Washington State
27. San Francisco - Pientka, K.D., DT, UCLA
28. Green Bay - Wuagneux, Elijah, G, Virginia
29. Chicago - Briggs, Glenn, RB, Georgia Southern
30. Pittsburgh - Sarnow, Richard, G, Alabama St.
31. St. Louis - Cooper, Pat, ILB, Notre Dame
32. New England - Henderson, Steven, T, Missouri

I'm not going to post a new file, we should be able to work from here.

strait8
03-12-2003, 05:20 PM
Offence
Kris Lucidio WR looks like a mature receiver who could help us

Ray Chabala RB looks like a sleeper to me. Good potential and solid now. Make a great backup for our 1st pick

shaun Oshiro TE the best of the TE class

Defence
Amari Jarrett I project him as a corner back. he would help us there.

Delvin Groh Also a great corner back candidate or even as a safety.

exactly what #2's and #3's do we have?

Tasan
03-12-2003, 05:47 PM
We have 2-1, 2-4, 3-1, 3-2, 3-4.

strait8
03-12-2003, 05:57 PM
Who do you guys like?

Tasan
03-12-2003, 06:21 PM
WR Kris Lucido looks real good here, and C Phillip Nicholas looks good too. DE Anthony Blankenhorn has nice potential for the second round as well, and DT Jay Taylor only lacks endurance to be a top DT. WLB Lamont Kiely looks to be a solid candidate to move to MLB or SLB. Safety is real deep and several could be CBs, but they'll take about 5% hit to their ratings to move there.

strait8
03-12-2003, 06:38 PM
I like Nicholas but only as a guard where we take about a 6% hit. We have a starting center and i would look for a backup in round 3.

I like george radlick Better than lamont kiely. He is better against the run (potentially) and as a pass rusher.

I'll pass on both Blakenship and Taylor till round 3. I'd rather have Groh or jarrett. They have so much more potential even with a position change hit. We need help in ythe Defensive backfield.

I would go Lucidio before Nicholas. I am certain that jarrett converts to DB at 95% so I want him.

Tasan
03-12-2003, 07:36 PM
Are you looking at the right Kiely? I see Kiely as having a 80 potential in run defense and a 92 in punishing hitter, two good qualities in run stuffing. I see Radlick at 56 for Run D, and 100 for hitting. Radlick's endurance is also showing to be lower than Kiely in the long run. The pass rushing is definatly in Radlick's favor though.

So should we pick WR Lucido and which ever S Strait8 wants? Neel I'd like to hear from you about the offensive picks here.

strait8
03-12-2003, 08:04 PM
I like my WLB to be a pass rusher first. Though I like both of these guys they will be subs to Kondovski. I think in this round we are still looking for starters, otherwise why trade down.

Thats why I want a DB first. I want Jarret. If we miss him then I'll re-evaluate.

I think Lucidio would also definitely start for us.

Tasan
03-12-2003, 08:58 PM
Here's how round 2 went:

33. Houston - Lucido, Kris, WR, Hawaii
34. Arizona - Groh, Delvin, S, Oklahoma
35. Detroit - Walkley, Javon, CB, Wisconsin
36. Houston - Amari, Jarrett, S, Miami, Florida
37. San Diego - Nicholas, Phillip, C, Maryland
38. Dallas - Edgeworth, Dwayne, T, Notre Dame
39. Minnesota - Radlick, George, OLB, Colorado
40. Kansas City - Lau, Ray, ILB, North Carolina State
41. Jacksonville - Seeley, Dave, ILB, Virginia Tech
42. Cincinnati - Richards, Brenden, S, Boston College
43. Indianapolis - Taylor, Jay, DT, Angelo State
44. Arizona - Madrigal, Xavier, CB, Miami, Florida
45. New Orleans - Blankenhorn, Anthony, DE, Louisville
46. Tennessee - Chabala, Raymond, RB, Ohio State
47. New York - Covington, Ralph, DT, California
48. Cleveland - Grodin, Matty, DT, SW Texas St.
49. Atlanta - Yellope, Zachary, CB, New Mexico State

Hi, I just joined this board tonight... May I join this GroupThink? =) Assuming the answer is yes here are my thoughts...

Kurt Ziegler RB - a bit small and one dimensional (won't help catch out of the backfield) but probably the best pure runner on the board.

Matt Dixon FB - I'd prefer a better blocker but can contribute on special teams and as a short yardage runner.

Roman Molden SE - a bit of a reach but I like his potential on kick returns.

Chad Zapisek TE - don't need a te, but he punishes people on special teams!

strait8
03-13-2003, 12:26 AM
Glad to have you aboard Hobbit. I think everyone's split.
pick a position or scouting job or both you like. Its on an earlier GT2 thread.

I will look at your suggestions. I'm defensive Co-ord so I won't make the final decision on any of these choices.

i'd like a better nlocker at FB too, but I really don't see a better package than Dixon

Tasan
03-13-2003, 01:49 PM
Matt Dixon FB -- A nice FB, about as good as it gets in this draft
Eric kraiger ILB -- I like this guy, but with the low Run Stop, I see him as an outside guy
Jimmie Packard-C -- His strength is the only thing that worries me
Saun oshiro TE -- nice rounded TE for this part of the draft
Frank Anderko WR -- Nice 3rd or 4th receiver with only one flaw
Kurt Ziegler RB -- I like this guy as a runner, but his fumbling might hurt
Roman Molden SE -- nice returner, but I'll only take him if he's around later
Chad Zapisek TE -- I really like this guy, but he might bust.

I'll make a decision from this list here soon. Welcome aboard Hobbit, it'll be nice to have another voice on here. Neel where are you!?!

I'm torn as to what to do with the rest of the draft. Part of me says to try and trade down the 3-4 for something in the 20s and use the 6-1 and 7-1 to pick up another 4 in the process. I just see the talent really dropping off quick here.

That would give us 2 1s, 2 2s, 3 3s, and 2 4s that we would have used in the draft, 9 picks in the first 128 picks.

I agree on the drop off.

Who are your two choices at this time. What would you get for trading down here in the way of extra picks?

i think there are 3 good players either here or as low as 3-20 from our list. so trade away

If you can add an extra player higher its better than 2 stiffs lower

My two choices are the ILB and one of the TEs, I'm still not sure which one. I'm almost certain the FB will be there at the end of 3 or the start of 4. Then we can grab the backup center and maybe one of the WRs, or something else.

I like Oshiro. He was the best TE of the class. getting him nere is a steal.

Tasan

alright then, I'll grab him and the ILB, and then work the phones.

Tasan

Here's the deal I could pull:

3-4, 6-1, 7-1 for San Fran's 3-27 and 4-27.

I picked TE Oshiro and ILB Kariger with 3-1 and 3-2.

These guys from our list are still there:
Matt Dixon FB
Jimmie Packard-C
Kurt Ziegler RB
Roman Molden SE

One thing I noticed about our roster is that we have no guards. Well we have guards, but they are real big question marks.

I found a decent G, P.D. Morris. Let me know what you think about him. FYI, C to G loses 14%.

I'm going to start cutting the dead weight so we can sign a few of these undrafted FAs before other teams get a crack at them. I'll post a file in a few minutes post draft, with cuts from me in it.

Tasan
03-14-2003, 12:35 PM
Okay it seems FOF4 handles draft eligible players differently post draft that previous versions, I hadn't noticed that before. It seems it lets the computer have first pick over whoever is left, then it lets the human player go at them. The QB I wanted was signed by Baltimore, so we'll have to find another option for QB3. I picked up a kicker from the draft to compete with our year 1 guy. Whichever is better after camp we'll keep. Here is a list of our cuts:

TE Jay Veen
TE Dan Dunn
C Matt Sutton
OLB Harold Schroeder
S Chris Katz
S Terrell Kramer

File will be up shortly, we need to identify some players, like QBs and Gs, to sign before camp.

here are my choices to look at:

Quarterback
Donnie Connell
Robert Collier

These guys are the best of a mediocre lot.

Guard
Blaine Bennet
Kim Brewington
Kieth Freitas

These guys can add depth. They will make ok backups

Please sign the following two guys for me:

CB Gerald Williamson if there is room

you will have to sign this guy as the computer wants us to carry 3 ILB's.

Jimmie Bernard SILB convert to MLB.

Please convert Jarret Amari to RCB.

Cuts. I need recommendations of who to cut so we can sign some of these guys. I've cut some, but I think more cuts are going to need to be made, and I think anything more than the obvious ones I need some input on. I'd hate to cut someone you're wanted to hang onto.

You can cut Chris Miller and Adam Viragh on defence.

my selections for offence are as follows:
Pete Upton
Glen Reisinger

that should be enough to add 5-6 more to fix all positions required.

Okay, I cut Miller, Viragh, and Reisinger. I left Upton as he shows nice potential right now, although that could very easily go way down after camp since he is one of the year 1 guys. I signed all the suggested players except for OG Bennet and QB (c)Bonnell.

I will have the file up shortly.
