This is probably one of my favorite titles this year. It just feels like you're really roaming around a revolving city. I can't believe I haven't touched COD 4 in days.

From what I've read, half of everyone loves this game, the other half not so much.

I agree Groundhog. I can't make up my mind on this one at all. I had been waiting so long and reading reviews, some folks have just butchered it.

I got it Thursday evening and played the heck out of it for a few hours.
First of all.. it's not bad.. it's gorgeous, it's got a cool storyline, it's HUGE, you can do some awesome stuff..
but
it really feels as if, despite the openess and amount of options, you're being quite limited in what to do. Go there, do x, y and z, and the top it off by killing Bad Guy.
Again, it's a BEAUTIFUL game.. it's got some really neat visuals for sure.. but I can't help being a bit disappointed in the actual action.

The most insightful review I read came from Penny Arcade. Basically what was said there is if you just play through the game as quickly as possible, like a reviewer on deadline might, it becomes a real chore. However if you enjoy exploring and doing sidequests and such it's a lot of fun. That seems to match up with the experiences that Coder and Mizzou have posted.

sounds like an improved hitman middle eastern theme or Prine of persia type game.

I think I fall into the unimpressed category. It's ok, but definitely not a great game and a pretty big letdown. I expected a more stealth oriented game that really immersed you into the time period and setting, and I'm not feeling that at all. It just feels very meh to me, and so far the little sidequests just seem out of place and really take you out of the setting.
I've only played for a few hours, so maybe it picks up but right now I'm not sure how long I'll keep playing it, especially with Mass Effect right around the corner.

Agreed. Mass Effect (360) and Uncharted (PS3) are the better options for your $60 this week. Assassin's Creed isn't a bad game by any means, but it's not great either. With the large number of releases this time of the year, a game has to be great to be noticed. As Coder mentioned above, the gameplay is too A-B-C for my taste.
Assassin's Creed was not good at all to me,its like pretty girl who depends on her looks but doesn't have much else to offer. Don't get me wrong it is a very good looking game but after the beauty what else is there?

Maybe it's because I'm further than some of you? I don't know, but the game has now become more "open ended" than when I first started due to all the side jobs there are.. not to mention all the sneaky killing there is to do.
Everyone has different tastes in games, Mass effect will be a wait and see purchase for me and I know many of you will be there as they are pulling it off the trucks.
MBBF - you rely on others to make up your mind on games and that's fine, but don't tell me mass effect is a better gaming choice - it might be for you, but don't speak for me please.

The PC version has been delayed until early next year, but it should be coming.
Also, how you doin', StarBuck?

Yeah I don't know, I guess my problem is all the side jobs seem the same so far at least, and the whole thing is sort of generic. I mean, the city looks beautiful, but it doesn't feel alive to me at all and it all seems sort of the same. It seems like all I'm doing so far is the save the citizen side missions, which seem really out of place to begin with, and then maybe the occasional pickpocket which I find to be sort of hit or miss. I just think the complaints of it being repetitive look to be founded imo. Also, is there no day/night cycle? I haven't seen anything yet and that's a rather curious omission.
That being said, just hopping on a horse and riding around the country-side is pretty damn fun to me. I really like the engine, and the free-running stuff looks amazing with about being a frustrating affair. I'd really love to see another game with this engine, something more along the lines of the Thief series or maybe an RPG, I think that could be great.
I might be waiting on Mass Effect also though. I've got too much of a backlog right now, still trying to finish The Witcher and the NWN2 expansion, and now I have Assassin's Creed on top of that, and playing a lot of Fire Pro Wrestling R. Rock Band is still taunting me as well, so who knows what will happen. I think we're going to see ME getting some critical reviews also, as it sounds very very similar to Knights of the Old Republic, with the same kind of warts and such. We'll see.

I'm tapped out at this point. Long night of FM on the PC. Mario Galaxy on the Wii. Reviewing COD4 and a slew of other games for the PS3. Still playing Ratchet and Clank.
Mass Effect will be an immediate buy this week.
That'll finish me off through Christmas. I'm interested in Assassins and will get it at some point, but not for a long while.

Nope. I agree that Mass Effect may not be for you, but I have no doubt that it will be the better game overall if you were to compare it with Assassin's Creed. It's a much more polished game from what I've seen in gameplay thus far. Assassin's Creed looks nice, but the overall gameplay just isn't as good.

So you've played Mass Effect?
Mass Effect is a must buy for me.

Yeah, I have to agree with MMBF. Mass Effect is Bioware - I'd be shocked if it isn't the game of the year when all is set and done.

I'll be surprised if Mass Effect isn't Game of the Year as well, even though I haven't played it, I've seen a lot of clips of gameplay. Bioware produces masterpieces when they take their time, and that appears to be the case here. I'll be at the store as soon as it is available tomorrow to pick it up. :)
