After reading a story on ESPN about the market for USFL collectibles, I was wondering what unique items everyone collects. I'm sure we all collected cards at one time or another, but I'm talking oddball items. What do you collect and why?

I collect adult-hetero porn. And thank goodness for the Internet. No longer am I the pervert behind the blue curtain at the local video store. I'm now the pervert in front of a 17" moniter inside my own home.

Shot glasses. Specifically, shot glasses from place other than CT. I have about 120 from London to Berlin, to Hawaii, to Vegas, to Maine. My wife wiped out about 15 of them one day when she got mad at me, slammed a door and a shelf fell off the wall. She still feels bad and that was 5 years ago. I forgave her pretty quickly. :)

Board games based upon TV game shows.

Did you know there were 33 versions of the "Password" board game made over the past 40 years? I only have 20, but I'm working on it.

Old books and magazines...well, I try to. Hard when you are poor. :)

I have an extensive collection of Analog. A healthy stack of Omni. Some Asimov Sci-Fi and a few others. I have 2 issues of Scientific American from April 1905. So far, the prize of my collection is a not-so good condition 1851 German copy of Faust by Goethe. To those who do not collect old books and mags, that may seem impressive....to those who do, it's not. :)

As for "Internet collecting", I download episodes of the 4 Star Trek series, Thundercats, Duck Tales, Tailspin, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, etc. Basically, cartoons and geek shows. :)

Masks, usually tribal (So far, most of them are from Asia and Africa. Hard to find so I don't have many.)

MAD Magazine :D (Collected them since I was a kid and although I've skipped a lot of issues, I have a pretty good sized colleciton. Unfortunately, I think they're losing value because I don't have them in those acid proof bags.)

basketball cards (the 1985-86 Fleer set... only 14 left before I complete the set.. unfortunantly one of them is Jordan) and baseball cards (1956 Topps in particular, as well as any and all Red Sox cards that come my way).

I think the brits just call it tinned. One of those language barrier things.

As for me:

Pine glasses/and steins and coasters from various pubs or bars. Have a couple hundred coasters, some very odd(one is shaped like an ice cream cone), and just a few glasses. Some I even paid for :D My favorite is a Spaten Munich class, "borrowed" from a pub after the chaos of Germany's Euro96 win.

Football memorabilia. Cards, pennants, SLU figures, autographs. My favorite set is 81 Topps, the first my father and I put together. That, and my Favre autograph.

Ever research the psychology of collecting?

Personally, the only things I "collect" are items of use. For me, this happens to be games or books. A baseball card or some stupid bobblehead doll has little intrinsic value to me sitting on a shelf. My wife calls that stuff "dust collectors"!

ColtCrazy
03-07-2003, 07:45 AM
I'm a gamer, but I wouldn't say I collect games, though I did once collect old teams in strat-o-matic basketball.
Looking at the list, a lot of these things are "dust collectors", but they have value to the collector. Most of the football stuff I have sits there, but I still enjoy the collection.

I really don't collect games. I was merely making the point that since I actually play games and read books, I tend to gather a collection of them. Once I'm finished, I'll either trade or sell it.

I wouldn't actually buy a game just to put it on a shelf. I derive pleasure from my ability to USE something. Apparently, I'm not wired like most people. I'm much too practical...

I collect bootlegs. I listen to 95% of them, but there are a few that I have downloaded and burned, or traded for, that I doubt I'll ever listen to - like U2 - I just have them in case someone wants to trade for one of them. This is a recent thing, I've probably got around 100 between those on my computer and those already on my shelf.

I used to collect baseball and basketball cards, before anyone actually collected them because of what they were or might be worth. After I sat on the floor of a Quick-E-Mart at age 20, going through boxes of cards with a friend of mine looking at the top and bottom cards to find the packs with "runs" that had the most valuable cards in them, I decided that collecting cards wasn't as much fun anymore. Although, I was poor back then, and now that I'm able to afford it, I have to admit, it would be pretty cool to buy a box or two and open every pack like I always dreamed of doing as a kid. But I'd rather have music.

You left off how many you have and whether or not they are from the night of the activity! :D

Okay, I collect musical CDs, movies on laser disk and now DVD, books on making pizza, and like Anxiety, bad computer games. My wife has a somewhat extensive doll collection.

If it is not from the evening of said activity then it has no value to me.

And a true gentleman never reveals how many. However, I would like to point out that among the ladies I have dated include a Miss America contestant, a stripper, a model, and an actress.

OTR (old time radio) shows, mainly mystery and sci-fi. I have around 3000 episodes consisting of The Shadow, CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, Suspence, Dimension-X, X-Minus 1 and some other random shows, some of the old Superman etc.

I am hoping to start my own internet radio station someday since I dont have to broadcast at 128kbps per listener because that would be pointless for spoken word.

Mmmmm......Spaten.......

I collect pounds, mainly around my mid-section, and credit card debt.

I don't really collect anything too avidly anymore, though I did expand my baseball card collection recently (finally got my Rickey rookie card, dammit!). I have a few foreign Monopoly sets (Norway, England, Ireland, Japan - US version with subtitles, Italy, and I think the Netherlands. I have to check though), before they came out with an -opoly for everything under the sun. Oh, and I had quite an extensive Playboy collection before I was married (had most of them from the mid-90's to mid-70's).

Forgot about DVDs. Since it's part of the home theatre I think of it more as a hobby than a collection but I have a little over 500 movies.
