Hey everyone,
My family and I (wife and 2 year old son) live in Cincinnati. My sister lives in Tuscon and is flying into Memphis for a conference at the end of March. We're going to get together with her, but we're debating which city. Nashville is 4.5 hours from Cincinnati, Memphis is 7.5. Any opinions on which city is better? Obviously, with our son we won't be into the bar scene.
Thanks!

Nashville is more family orientated.

Nashville is quite nice. I've been told Memphis is a dump, but I've never been there.

Strictly FWIW, I've always thought Nashville was one of the most overrated places I've ever been. Even my 9 y/o looked at me after driving around it a bit and said "Is that all there is?".
Memphis, while a miserable hell hole in the summer humidity, at least managed to hold my attention for a day or so (longer if you can do the adults in nearby Tunica thing)

I like Nashville, especially if you have any interest in Country Music. There is the Grand Ole Opry, Vanderbilty University, the Parthenon (not the real one but a really cool to scale replica that you can tour)...we stopped there on a road trip a few months ago and had a really good time just walking around and driving around the city and outlying areas.

Nashville by a country mile (especially given the shorter drive).

Part of Memphis is in Arkansas. ARKANSAS. Do you really want to go there? :P
(I have nothing against Arkansas, it's a really pretty state.)

Wow, seems like Nashville it is! Thanks for the suggestions everyone! And yes, the shorter dive is a big factor with the baby along.

Definately Nashville. The best of Memphis is bars with some blues music. In Nashville you should go visit Andrew Jacksons home (The Hermitage). They have a walking tour where you listen via headset to the tour content.

Split the difference and go to Hurricane Mills. Who would pass up seeing a town based around Loretta Lynn? ;)

I've never been to Nashville, but go to Memphis about 3 to 5 times a year. Memphis has a few good things, especially if you like Elvis or Blues music. But other than that, it's not all that thrilling of a place. Beal St. is really more for adults. I think you'd be better off meeting in Nashville.

I've been to Memphis and to Nashville, and I liked Memphis much more, but I agree that Nashville would be better in KevinNU7's case.

Quite honestly, are you white or black? I hate to get down to that, but if you are white, I'd go Nashville, if you are black go Memphis.
One other thing to consider, what industry are you in?
I can answer questions you may have regarding Memphis and Nashville, just PM me.

Lived in or near both, and I wouldn't lived in Memphis again if someone put a gun to my head (which is called "Thursday night" in Memphis). Beale Street is ok, but even as a non-fan of country music, I always enjoyed downtown Nashville.

Nash-vegas....LOL - one of my best friends from college works at Vandy and lives in Nashville, and he calls it Nashvegas all the time. Never gets old.
