View Full Version : FOFC Pandora Radio Station

Okay, based on this thread, http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=50207, the idea of a shared FOFC Radio station on Pandora didn't get a ton of immediate backing, but I want to do it anyway. The biggest obstacle with the station is that only the creator of the station can make changes to it -- if anyone else does, they make the station "their own" meaning that any changes the creator makes to it won't be carried over to you.
My proposal is that everyone submits a song or artist that they would like to have included in the station every so often -- maybe once per week? But I'm definitely open to other ideas!

The station has been created. Since I couldn't find Antmeister's "Cheat," I used "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" to get it started. I'll add everyone's suggestions next. In order to get it shared, add agage1 AT gmail DOT com to your friends list, and mention something about FOFC. I'll add everyone's suggestions after I go downstairs and get some candy.

The Cure, Pictures of You -- Nice
Slayer, Skeletons of Society -- Not my thing, but I sat through it :p
Belly, Now They'll Sleep -- I have that album! Must be from Lush -- I don't have any of their albums, but thought they were pretty good, without ever really getting into them
Lush, I've Been Here Before -- Never heard this song before, but I like it.

Oh yeah -- I read that in the FAQ, but wasn't sure if I believed it. Oh, I also read that the reason it asks for your gender is because it customizes the ads you get according to gender. Pretty weird.

I agree with this. I guess I can see why people might want to use an established shared sation as a starting point, then "make it their own" by customizing it how they want. I emailed them and told them what I wanted the station to do, and they thought it was a cool idea, so maybe they'll implement it.
Some more thoughts:
What do you think of the pace? Since I'm impatient, I want to be able to add everyone's music, but I think it is possible to go too fast, and it might be nice to let it grow a little bit at a time. Also, I guess we still don't know how many people will do this -- we might get more with the evening crowd, or people who aren't online today, because of long weekends.
Also, should we have some kind of policy for thumbs down? My first inclination was that it's just about hearing new stuff, and people can skip songs (and if they skip too many, they can just take a break and listen to their own stations for a while). But on the other hand, it might not be the end of the world if someone like a song that's thumbed down.

I liked the Pantera song it played... "Cemetery Gates". Maybe you headbangers aren't as weird as I thought. ;)
This project has promise if we can get some more suggestions, as long as everyone realizes they're not going to love everything that's on here, but are open to hearing new things and genres. The Avett Brothers is also not normally my bag, but I liked a couple of the songs it put on in that vein. This is going to be a nice addition to my rotation of music listens throughout the week.

I haven't been thumbsing anything up or down. I'll end up thumbsing all of my selection, and probably thumbs some stuff down. I like it the way it is.. that way there's a nice variety.. if we thumbs up too much of one genre, it will turn into that and that's what I want to avoid. Me too. I've really liked what I've been hearing so far, and that's despite the fact that my recommendation was more of an FOFC joke just to get things started. I've been pondering what song I'll add quite a bit -- I think the Pandora site says that songs are better to add, because you're getting more into what you like, rather than an artist, which can be a little more varied in their songs. I dunno. But I think that if I'm interested in adding an artist, I'll just pick a song I'm in the mood for, to tell the machine, and all of you, what song I like. It's tought to decide, though. Part of me wants to choose based on what I think is lacking in the station, but another part of me also wants to recommend stuff that people who have recommended other things on the station might like.
path12
12-03-2007, 03:30 PM
I think generally that an artist that has a particular sound will be a bit less varied than an artist that is quite eclectic -- along the lines of Old 97's vs. someone like Beck for example.
I agree with you on pondering what kinds of songs. I'm going to avoid certain songs I might like to put on there simply because I hear similiar things already on the station currently. My goal is going to be to try for more eclecticity (I don't even know if that's a word!).

I think you're listening to "Everbody Wants to Rule the World" Radio, which is what the station was called before I renamed it "FOFC Radio" -- I don't know why it would be called that for you. On the left side, does it say "FOFC Radio" somewhere, with a little curvy arrow by it? If so, you should be able to click on that and get it to work. If it's not there, I can share it with you again.

If you have the Pandora website open, and it says FOFC Radio on the left highlighted around the box in orange, then you are listening to the station. I don't think you can just listen to random music... you always have to start "a station" by telling it an artist or song you like... so the station is sort of random music, but it is supposed to be music that is similar to the seed music we've given Passacaglia.

I wish the site would just tell you what the seed you're listening to is based on. I guess that the best way to do it is wait for a seed to play that song, and assume four songs around it are from that song?

I have gotten the exact songs that have been picked, but it tends to pick songs that sound LIKE the songs picked, not necessarily the songs actually picked.
Passacaglia
12-06-2007, 01:09 PM
Right. It will play the songs we've picked...sometimes. It has a thing about being sute not to play songs "on-demand" since that would violate the terms of their license. Basically, it plays what it calls "seeds", which are groups of four songs that are based on one of the songs or artists in our collection. After a while you'll see the pattern.

Yes. Otherwise, it might get stale as you hear some of the same songs over and over again. (It has tried to play Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" for me at least 5 times in the last week. I do not wish to hear this song, but can't give it the thumbs down.)

I think that "sharing" is just an invitation to someone else to listen to your station. Or maybe "sharing" just means that you're giving the site permission to let other people listen to a station on your profile.

If you guys think the FOFC Radio Station is a cool idea, but you're not sure if you want to listen to it all the time, you might want to check out the QuickMix feature. I've been using it this morning, with a lot of success. I mixed FOFC Radio, my own station where I've thrown in everything I like, the same kind of station by a friend of mine (where she's thrown in everything she likes), plus one of the Classical stations. I like it because first of all, while I like you guys and your musical tastes, I don't want to listen to it at the expense of listening to my own station; plus, it makes a seed that I don't like more palatable -- it plays 1-2 songs from a station before moving on to another station, but keeps the seed intact, so if I get a bad seed, it's not four songs from that seed in a row -- instead it mixes those four songs with my other stations.

Added.
Also, I just listened to a station based only on Psycho Drama -- and like I thought, it was a bunch of 70s easy listening crap. Sorry if any of you were subjected to that -- Psycho Drama really is awesome, though!

Okay, I've replaced Psycho Drama with the Apparat Organ Quartet.

Pass, watching your angst over your Rupert Holmes choice was quite entertaining. If only the song were quite as entertaining...

Well, I have to give this thread new life somehow. You didn't like Psycho Drama? Ah, well. At least you got to hear it! I almost added a Sundays song today, but Pandora didn't have it.

The Sundays are my favorite band of all time. Which song did you try to add?

Must be a little too obscure for it. They do have some live songs and B-sides, which has been a nice treat in some cases... oh well.
In other FOFC Radio News, I am hearing the Buffalo Fight Song by Wide Right right now... and it is pretty funny.
Hey ho, let's go Buffalo
it isn't always freezing
and it doesn't always snow

Was this referring to stuff in general, or the Sundays specifically?

In general. I have The Sundays on one of my stations, and I've never heard anything except album tracks for them.

How are you guys listening to the station now? I'm using it mainly on a quick mix rather than the station itself. I really like how it adds variety to my usual station. And I really like that Hit and Run song by the Horrorpops (I think that was an add of Lathum's)......

I'm still doing QuickMix. I usually mix the FOFC station, my personal station where I throw a bunch of stuff in, and the same kind of station for a friend (where she's thrown in a bunch of stuff), and then the station of one band I'm in the mood to hear (if I'm in the mood for something in particular).
It's a pretty good mix. I know it'll have mostly stuff I like from my general station, plus whatever I'm in the mood for. Then I add in stuff I may not have thought to listen to from FOFC (a lot more country than I would normally do), and my friend's station (a lot of R&B and popular dance music).

Looks like it's time again to add stuff. Since DC and I have 5 items, and everyone else has less, let's set a maximum number at 5 for now, then we can think about it again when everyone has caught up. DC, if you want, you can replace one of yours. I probably will replace Psycho Drama with something -- just not sure what yet.
Sure no problem.. I think I'll leave it as is for now.

Let's do the same deal as last week -- feel free to add stuff, unless you have 5, in which case you can replace something.
The thing I would want to add isn't listed on Pandora, so I'll take this chance to direct y'all to their myspace page. The band name is "No Kids" and their myspace page is www.myspace.com/nokidsband/ I think. I heard a few songs of theirs on Radio David Byrne, but I didn't listen to what's on their myspace page. But anyway, there it is.

I'm going to leave mine. Not sure what to add this week, so I'll take a week to consider it.

I'm hearing a really cool song on here now, called Maps and Legends, by Taxi Taxi. I wish I knew why it was recommended (I mean, it may be because of one of my choices, and nothing to do with any of you :p ), but it's pretty cool!

I've liked the Nagisa Ni Te so far. Can we keep it?
I'd been liking it, too. But I just heard "Wife" and after a while, it sounded like the CD was skipping. Brings back bad memories...

I've been back on a radioio kick the past couple weeks now that they've re-added the indy rock channel, but this is still my other main option. I've been pretty happy with the mix right now.

I listen every so often. I'd be up for either restarting or resuming this, if people are interested.

I hardly ever listened to this until I got my new blackberry that can stream pandora radio. Now it is perfect for when I am shoveling snow or other activities around the house. (Or I could just use my ipod I suppose but I never seem to keep it up to date these days)

Pandora Ends the Tyranny of 40-Hour Listening Caps - Techland - TIME.com (http://techland.time.com/2011/09/22/pandora-ends-the-tyranny-of-40-hour-listening-caps/)
Not sure it really suits my listening style (due to the limited skips) but I have to admit that I like the new interface.

Does anyone know how I can bookmark songs? I feel lost with the new format.
Thx

I'm not sure, but you could move those songs to a 'bookmark' station, that you wouldn't have to listen to. Not the cleanest thing, though -- when I listen to Pandora tomo I'll see if I can find how to really do it.

Sorry, I never got around to this! But, while researching another issue, I found this in a comment to the blog post announcing the new site.
Your old bookmarks are still around, click My Profile and then there's a link for Bookmarks with an explanation at the top about the change.
But now that I see what your question actually was, it looks like they've replaced bookmarking with the "like" feature.
