A big day in high school football in Texas yesterday. For the first time since they've joined the 5A division in 2002, Southlake Carroll won't be playing for the 5A title. They lost to Abilene 22-21 on a last second fumble at the Abilene 10 yard line, after starting the drive on their own 8 with 2 and half minutes to play. The end of one of the most impressive runs by a team in Texas high school history. The last Carroll QB to lose a playoff game was none other than Chase Daniel, a one point loss to Katy in the 2003 state championship game.
A few rungs down the ladder, my alma mater, Fort Worth Nolan Catholic, played for the TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) Big school title for the 3rd time in four years. They won it in 2004 and 2005. But they lost 38-14 to Houston St. Pius X.

Breaking news: No teams from the Rio Grande Valley will ever get far in the Texas state playoffs, so things are unchanged here.

Sounds like mine. My school sucked for 16 years and started getting better my junior year. Senior year we had a chance to get into the regionals but had to play a three way tie-breaker. In the final segment of the tie-breaker a sophmore fumbled and killed it for us.
Three years and a couple playoff appearances later, my school won the state championship in Washington.

I will try to remember that. I wasn't even a sperm yet, and 35 years away from moving to Texas.
That was also before the boys up north started drinking their milk I take it, because right now it takes two valley linemen to equal one from the rest of the state.

I watched the game on tape delay yesterday, and I couldn't believe how they lost it. Not only did SLC fumble the ball at the ten yard line, they fumbled the ball on the snap when the QB was just going to take a knee so that the kicking team could get out there. Of course, it was the second string QB (first stringer and the previous coaches son, Riley Dodge, went out in the first half with a shoulder injury), but still, there's not a whole lot of excuse for losing a ball like that. Hopefully the kid can overcome that mistake, though, and be successful next year as the starting QB.

In other news California doesnt have a true playoff system. True to form, they play Bowl Games. *sigh*

And isn't his dad now the head coach at North Texas State (or I am just confused?)

You're confused about the name of the school (The University of North Texas, which hasn't been NTSU for nearly ten years), but you're correct about Todd Dodge. In fact, Riley has committed to UNT to play for his father...

As Senator has posted a guide to it before, they are absolutely using a system in the Southlake program. All of the middle schools in Southlake run the exact same offenses and defenses as the high school team. That way, once they hit high school, the coaches have a real good handle on what kind of players they have, and how well they can play within the system. And the results have spoken for themselves. More and more of the districts across Texas are looking to do the same thing with their middle and junior high programs.
