PSP Question - Memory Card

Do I have to have a Memory Card to play games and save? Or is it just an option if want to copy something from one PSP to another?

e.g. if I get MLB the Show, to save my game do I need a memory stick/card or can I save it on the PSP itself?

Gosh, I could've sworn that they used to come with the stupid sticks, I just looked at ebgames.com now and saw that the core model doesn't. Of course, the Daxter one does.
