Freakin' broke out a game of Colonization, playing for a few hours, actually had an awesome setup and game going...boom. The current ice we've got knocks out the power right before I get set to declare independence.

Yeah, most of the town we live in lost power for a few hours today. People freaking out at Walmart when they shut it down. :)

I hope my young trees make it, they are all humped over.

My in-laws down in Missouri called and said that they're probably about to lose their power, so if we can't get ahold of them it because the cell towers aren't working...

OK, so we're going to evidently get smashed with ice tonight in KC. Yesterday, we were in a 'Winter Storm Watch', but they've updated it this morning and changed it to a 'Ice Storm Warning' for this evening through Tuesday. They're expecting an inch (or possibly more) of ice accumulation. Power lines generally start going down after 1/2 inch of ice accumulation, so you can imagine how bad it will be with at least an inch of ice accumulation. They're calling for thunderstorms with a temperature of 29 degrees. They're warning everyone that leaves their homes to take food and blankets in the car as there's a good chance they may be stuck without help for awhile.

Time to charge up the PSP and DS batteries and start up the fireplace. I don't plan on heading into work tomorrow.

It's the one brutal thing about living in the middle climates in the U.S. The start of winter and the end of winter always bring a major ice storm at one point or another. The good part is that you get a day off of work. The bad part is that you often have nothing to do without any power and end up huddled in front of the fireplace to keep warm.

I'd take a major snowstorm (12-18 inches) anyday. I can at least drive my 4x4 through that stuff. On an inch of ice, my 4x4 is little more than a very heavy sled with no steering.

The people who live across the street from me are great entertainment on the mornings when it has snow or ice. It is an elderly couple (in their 60s) who's daughter (in her 30s) and granddaughter (like 16-19) lives with them. The daughter and granddaughter do no outside chores, so the snow/ice remains until the older couple get out there later in the morning, but the 30+ year old daughter leaves for work around 7am or so regardless of the weather.

This morning with everything a sheet of ice, I got to watch her try to get the car out of the driveway. She felt that spinning the wheels as fast as they could go would be a great plan on getting out of the driveway. First her car went sideways, and almost took out their mailbox.. then she managed to find some traction just in time to have the car suddenly jolt backwards at like 5000 rpm right for my next door neighbor's front yard. I have no idea how she didn't take out one of the two trees there, but she somehow got out unscathed and left for work.

-After- she was gone, I decided to go out and take care of the ice in my driveway :)

We have a neighbor who has an inclined driveway. Last time there was an ice storm, they tried to get up the driveway but only made it about halfway up the drive. Instead of backing the car back down and parking it on the street, they decided to put on the parking brake and leave the car sitting on the incline.

The next morning, I looked out the front window and saw that the car had slid back down the driveway and come to rest in the middle of the street, blocking all traffic so that no vehicles could pass either way, including the snowplows.

Power went out about 4pm I think and the wife and kids went to a friends house close by as all the hotels in town were booked. I stayed home to take care of the pets and the house. About 12:30am I get jolted out of bed and notice the power was back on.

speaking of funny elderly in the snow, a fistfight broke between a 72yo lady and her 40 something neighbor in the area last week after she'd blown some snow from her front yard to his, and he'd blown it back, and she'd blown it back... :D When the lady's husband, himself 70yo, showed up, the 40 something man pushed him and tried to choke him. He has been charged with whatever they charge stupid people... :D

yeah, I often whine about the weather (low temps, lots of snow and such) but will take it anytime compared to the frigging ice. There's no driving possible in that crap. Good luck to all stuck with it...

Well, there is some good coming out of this. I don't have to take my final exams tonight or tomorrow morning. Now if the ice stays around for Wednesday, I can get a clean sweep for finals! :)

Oh, I have had about half of a dozen tree branches fall in my front yard so far today. Luckily, our power line is not under any trees, so I shouldn't lose power.

We were told today that any service calls that needed to be run had to have manager approval first. So, it's a good day to stay out of ice and have fun with paperwork.

It actually isn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Temperatures hovered at 30-31 all night so the ice didn't form nearly as fast as it would have in the upper 20s or lower. There was a break in the rain from ~2 until about 6 this morning in Lawrence, a little later on both of those times for KC. And now it's been raining steadily all day, with some sleet mixed in as the temp has fluctuated between 32 and 33.

There is a coating on everything but major highways are ok and most places closed shop for the day anyway so traffic is fairly light. Problem is there's a cold front pushing down from the north so as soon as it cools off tonight, everything is going to be a giant icy mess.
