View Full Version : Werewolf LXIII - Fall of the Elementals (Game Over - Avatars Win!)
Coffee Warlord

I'm baaaaack.
Years have passed since the Elementals failed in their attempts to acheive supreme godhood. Humanity, realizing how close they came to such a fate, declared war on the entire race, weaving powerful magics to hunt them down and exterminate them.
The few that remain are far, far weaker than their ancestors, and they have gathered in a small mountain village, attempting to salvage what remains of their power. A desperate plan was hatched to regain their lost power. The few elders that remained broke their own laws, drilling a hole in reality and letting loose the avatars of the Old Gods - secretive beings of immense power and oftentimes instruments of divine justice - in the hopes they could turn the tide in the war against humanity.
It backfired. Blaming the remaining Elementals for their imprisonment, but knowing that even weakened Elementals in large enough numbers could kill them, they disguised themselves among them, wreaking havok and picking the desperate race off one by one. Now you are down to only a handful, and your kind has the unfortunate task of snuffing out the Avatars amongst you. Once per day, as the sun sets, one being will be placed upon the altar of sacrifice, calling upon the ancient powers to smite the doomed soul.
The Elementals
You are trying to save your race from impending doom. You've released several pissed off Avatars, and now have to figure out how to kill them. Even weakened, yours is a powerful race, filled with strange and wonderful powers.
Each player will receive 4 powers. At the start of every day, the stars will foretell the coming sign (Trout, Yak, Squid, Rhino). This sign corresponds to the power you may use at night. For example, if the Sign of the Yak is overhead, you may use 2nd power in your list (they are well-labeled), and ONLY the 2nd power in your list. ALL Elemental powers are 1 time uses, so use them wisely. The sign is determined by random roll each day, allowing you to use the corresponding power.
For example, Ed the Elemental has the following powers:
Trout) May slap someone with a fish.
Yak) May become total awesomeness.
Squid) May become colossal.
Rhino) May flip out and kill everything.
The day phase starts, and the sign of the Yak comes up. Assuming Ed has not already used his Yak power, he may use that power that day/night (some powers are day use). Remember, every power is a one shot use, so once it's used, it's gone.
The Avatars
They're big. They're nasty. That want to Kill Things. They can do scary shit.
Everything Else
This is one of my games. Things are not as they seem. Some players have secondary motives, some players are entirely on their own, and situations can change rapidly. Expect weird things to happen, because they will.
Also note. Like my last game, IF YOU ARE DEAD, YOU ARE NOT NECESSARILY OUT OF THE GAME. So don't PM with fellow dead people, don't discuss the game like you're out of it.
Usual standard rules apply. Bold your votes, don't edit your posts, blah blah blah. You know the drill.
Day Phase: 9am CST to 9pm CST I want to get at least 1 day on the weekend as well, unless the entire playerbase is gone. If we can run both Sunday and Saturday, great, if not, we'll just run a long day phase over the full weekend (aka Saturday 9am to Sunday 9pm).

How complicated will this one be?
The rules you see are as complicated as it gets for players. There may (okay, there will) be strange events that alter circumstances, but what you see posted is what you have to worry about. There are of course, secondary motives you may have to deal with if you have one, but to be honest, this isn't all that convoluted.
Really, the ruleset itself is fairly simple, it's really a game of strategic use of powers, and dealing with the bizarre events that can happen when people start letting loose their abilities.

I don't have a problem with it. I probably chose a poor time to end my game (Thursday, 2 PM). It makes it hard to get another game started that week, but a long wait until the next week begins. Day 8 has the potential to be a crazy one (but then again, for all I know, it could be pretty blah), but I don't think it should cause a problem.

JE, sounds like you didn't get the cool elemental powers, as mine are entirely fish-based. I'm sure from this information that you must, in fact, be an avatar. I'll be voting for you as soon as I'm allowed to do so.
Actually, not so much. Just wanted something different to say than "elemental checking in".
Is there any value at this point in having some conversation about abilities? I honestly don't know as I read my PM if I'm a standard elemental, or if we are all going to have unique abilities. I suspect the latter, but figured I would put this out for some Day 1 group-think.

I would bet that while there is some overlap there is also some uniqueness to the powers. We elementals are at a disadvantage with seemingly no BG or seer to help us.

I actually think there are probally 10-12 different powers at least and some that are the same. given what my powers are and when they can be used.

I agree. I almost hinted at one of my powers above and decided even that wasn't a good move. But I think that is for selfish reasons (I don't want the Avatars to target me).
hoopsguy
12-11-2007, 03:43 PM
I'm not sure there is value either. But it does present one of those interesting scenarios where there is pressure on the minority group to figure out how to fit in with the majority group.
There are a ton of ways to apply pressure to the minority group in a game of werewolf. I'm wondering what people think about the risk/reward of doing it in this manner for this particular game.
Personally, I'm fairly comfortable posting on my capabilities, with a smidgen of discretion. I would expect that this makes a lot of sense to an elemental who is reading this post, if their PM looks like mine.

10-12 sounds like an awful lot. I'd think fewer but with different restrictions on when they could be used.
I wouldn't say that's a lot if we are to assume there are 3 Avatars that leaves 12 of us elementals. you figure you share at least two different "powers" with at least on other person (that alone is 12) and everyone has 4. I don't think that's a bad assumption at all.
if there are only 12 total powers with 12 people then you would share your power with 4 people. not a large leap there either.

If you think I'm a wolf/avatar, then vote for me. But to end my streak you have to vote for a villager/elemental. That will be the case here, but the rest of the villagers/elementals should probably have better reasons for voting other than this, right?

We've got a little more time before self-preservation mode kicks into play - I'm still hoping for something in the ballpark of a good reason to cast my vote.
For those who take notes on this type of thing, SnDvls cast his self-preservation vote on Pass instead of me. That would have more meaning if it were closer to the deadline, but at face value it suggests that they are not both Avatars. Otherwise, he would choose me rather than a teammate in a tie race that is starting to creep up on the deadline.

i like to have the numbers because i like to see the order in which the votes were cast. for example, there is alot more meaning, imo, when someone votes for a brand new person at the end of the day, basically making a total throwaway when there is a 3 way tie going on, than there is to someone making a random selection at the beginning of the day.

Also, I'm somewhat hindered from voting for SnDvls, even though it would create a three-way tie. If I do that, he can change his vote to me and I can no longer even force a tie, let alone keep myself one vote back.
So unless votes come off of me sometime soon I'm pretty much locked into a pure defensive vote today. Better Day 1 than later in a game, I guess, but I still greatly prefer putting a vote on someone based on an assumption of guilt.

Right, I'm not suggesting that you and I have different powers (I don't have the one you mentioned) and different day/night breakouts as a reason to vote for you.
But, if no one else has a 2/2 split then I would believe that you guessed at the question I posed and were wrong. You can use the other argument - that a wolf has teammates who can communicate with him so he is up to speed on everything.
Or the idea that you pay more attention as a wolf as you have more to lose than you do as a vanilla villager.
Or how about this - that most Day 1's do not "partially start" a day early, and then "actually start" on the following page? In this particular case I looked at the first couple of posts and everything that started today (which was on Page 2).
If you want to vote for me, go for it. But this reason sucks imho.

Hmm, from where I sit casting the early vote for someone, then moving it when they are the vote leader - with enough time for it to matter - to another candidate near the top smells like wolf protecting wolf action.

At least half of the active players have been in the thread in the last 30 minutes. I still haven't heard anyone state that they have a 2/2 split on powers.
I agree that this is giving away some information potentially, but it also allows us to make a more informed vote tonight. What if the game has all elementals with a 3/1 split in the same direction (note: I'm not asking anyone to volunteer this)?
If you think this notion is shaky, I would argue that it is based on a lot more than a "random vote".

Note - my vote puts all 15 votes in play and we have a tie between Pass and SnDvls. I did this with enough time to let people move their vote in whatever manner they see fit.
Votes as of Post #200:
Pass - Clap (77), SnDvls (119), JE (161), Saldana (184)
SnDvls - Purdue (79), Cronin (105), Pass (156), Hoops (200)
Hoops - BK (107), Schmidty (108), Lathum (187)
Purdue - Path (90)
Saldana - MrW (93)
Clap - Swaggs (114)
Path - JEH (76)

2nd note - the easiest vote for me, from a self-preservation standpoint, is to vote for Pass. I'm instead going for the person I consider most likely to be an Avatar.

Saldana, there are enough of us here to move it if need be.
Do you think Pass is more likely to be an Avatar than SnDvls?
Do you think that no one coming forward to suggest a 2/2 split of powers is completely meaningless?

fortunately for you, i am not following that logic, because creating a tie on day one is NOT a villager move.
I have a 2/2 split. happy now

If one other person has a 2/2 split, then I drop the line of inquiry.
then vote me then and then if I get lynched it will prove two things
1) I was good and I f'ed up trusting you and
2) you are bad and this game just got a day shorter
I honestly don't care...I'll be the sacrafical lamb for day 1 (someone has to) and hopefully it will lead to some analysis for later in the game. Heck I might even get brought back.
I'm not going to get worked up over a game or lose sleep over it that is for sure.

Unlike most other beings, your votes are not so much a vote, but a collective, hive minded decision to execute someone. No one is brought forth, no kicking, no screaming. But something does indeed happen. As the sun sets, you gather around the sacred altar in the village, and appearing in the center is Passacaglia.
Before the poor sap even can react, the stars overhead coalesce into the sigil of the Squid, who unleashes its tentacly might, enveloping Passacaglia. There is dead silence, though for an instant you hear a faint voice, sounding eerily like a legendary human known to some as Fritz. He lets out a faint squeal of delight, and you can just make out 'save the colossal squid, suckas!', before Passacaglia simply vanishes without a trace, quite dead. Or at least mostly dead. Or, hell, god knows what that crazy Squid can do.
Regardless, the moment fades, and Passacaglia is lost to the world.
And he was an Elemental. Suck it, Trabek.
Squid 1, Elementals 0.

Alrighty, the Squid is fed.
Night actions due 9am CST tomorrow. Also note, my company's xmas party is tomorrow night, so I will NOT be around for the deadline. Votes will still be due at 9pm CST, but results will have to wait. Also, if you have any questions, ask them tonight or during the day tomorrow, 'cause I won't be around to field them.

I'm willing to play a game of chicken, but tonight is closer than I would have cut it if I was in cahoots with SnDvls. I had no idea if a 9PM vote would even count.
I'm hoping that people do check out both me and SnDvls to get some clarity out of today. Good suggestion, Lathum.

I realize its likely that one or both of hoops/Sn is elemental, I'm just not willing to make it automatic. Pass was always there as an escape hatch. I think he was in the lead or tied for the lead the entire time.

Are we safe in assuming that there are pretty much three factions at work here? Anyone have any strategies/thoughts on this, at this point?

3 factions?
Just kind of thinking outloud about this, but it seems like there are elementals, avatars, and "everything else," which includes other victory conditions. Sounds like another organization at work, to me, and it seemed like there were some potentially coordinated maneuvers for a day 1 vote.
I'm probably better off keeping my mouth shut in the early game, since I traditionally don't end up doing real well when I try to figure things out during the first couple of days. :)

For those who have questions on my play today, I'm happy to take them tomorrow when we have more information at our disposal.
I think I was very clear in the thread, as events transpired, about where my thought process was over the last 90 minutes. But I moved my vote late to a good guy, so I expect that I'll be asked about it a few different ways.

Lathum, I honestly don't see a whole lot of reason for discussion tonight. People can likely obtain some sort of information from night actions. So let's have as many cards on the table as possible to frame the discussion.
If people can view, I'm likely to be viewed. Ditto SnDvls.
If there are not any kind of views shared tomorrow, then we get to have a discussion based upon interpretation of play.
I'm planning on sharing any information I learn, and I would expect that you guys will find me around if I'm not night-killed by an Elemental. The Avatars are probably best served leaving me alone to take heat tomorrow and I fully expect them to do this.

What an exciting end to the day. I'm sorry I missed it. And, ftr, I am very suspicious of cronin: he starts the whole thing with hoops and then finds reason after reason to not do what he says he'll do (cast a vote for hoops, change the tie). I don't like it.
