View Full Version : Guard to Tackle position change

I have an MP draft coming up, and it is loaded with great guards and only a few starting quality tackles (which I need). If experience is equal or close between O-line positions, what other stats (or heights/weights) are good for a high percentage transition, or is it sort of random how good a guard is at a different position (excluding center)?

Also, what are the main factors in the switch from RT to LT? Is it just height and weight (given equal experience)?

From my experience in single player, guards do not translate well to tackle positions and right tackles do not translate well to left tackles. The reverse works though.

You can usually change a rookie RT to LT before training camp without a hitch. The only thing I'd pay attention to when making a G to T switch would be height and weight. Again, making the switch before his first training camp is desirable.

In real life you'll almost never see a guard to tackle switch. In general, the better the lineman, the farther from the center he lines up. Players that can't make it at tackle often then get a chance at guard. It's true that guards are often smaller than tackles because they need to be more mobile to pull wide.
By chance, i looked up the combine color coding in FOF yesterday (same reason as you) and guards and tackles have almost identical spreads.

Okay --- along with the same vein of this thread ---

your choices are (they're all bad)

a) convert a LG to LT (he's "red" already in LT) who is currently 67 rated as a G (conversion states he'll lose 30%)

b) just play him there without converting

c) convert a 86 rated LG (conversion states he'll lose 23%) ----- he's 6'3 307 which is a little small

d) trade my 1st round next year for a decent LT so my QB (thank god he's rated MAX in Sense rush) does not die....

e) play my 44/44 RT over at LT

D. In all of the other options you're simply losing. if you can find a good trading partner, you can get value in exchange for a draft pick.

if your QB is max in sense rush, then I would explore options not involving trading picks. O-line isn't the be-all when you have a good QB. Now if he was poor in the area, then I'd be more inclined to make a trade.

I'm just testing this, and to my surprise i have found the following (small sample size, just 3 players tested, but all them had the same result).

When i try to move a LG to LT, the game says he will keep only a 70% of his ratings, but when i do the move, his potential is the same or just +/- 2 or 3 points instead of going down a 30%. Can you please try yourself? Are them really getting equal or even better despite what the message said about loosing a 30% or is it due to the scouting error?

If i have time later i'll do a test with more players and simming multiple seasons.

Just a quick non-scientific look through my one historical league seems to indicate that QB's with pretty good avoid rush are going to get sacked around 35 times a season w/ a below average line. Guys with poor avoid rush seem to be near the top in sacks allowed. Although, i have no idea how hurries and such come into play. Might be where good linemen get separated out better from bad ones.

Anybody done any kind of OL/QB Avoid rush type testing? Would be interesting to check out if it's been done.

What type of game are you doing this in? As far as I'm aware, if you try to change positions in multiplayer, the ratings that come up immediately after the position change (i.e. before you create your export file) don't reflect the reduction in ratings from the position switch - this change in ratings will only come through after the export has been uploaded and the turn run. (For example, if I switch LG Irving Addison (Shiba MP league - LV, 2nd year, 71/72) to LT, I'm told that he'll retain 78% of his ratings, but the after-switch rating is 53/75 - lower current due to different experience, but higher 'future'. In a single-player game, if I switch LG Andy Thies (2nd year, 34/52) to LT (coincidentally also a 78% of ratings switch), his post-switch ratings are 19/43, which looks about right given the 78% factor.)

My thinking here is that this feature has been added in order to stop people trying out every possible switch in an MP game - will help to stop people trying to fiddle the system to their own advantage...
