SkyDog,

Given the popularity of Football Manager / WWSM on this board - to me it seems to dwarf that of Hattrick - do you think you could create a sub-forum for FM/WWSM just like Hattrick?

I'm not trying to rid the OT board of the FM folks - of which I am one of - rather a dedicated forum would lend itself to the creation of several topics, rather than having them all crammed into the "First Impressions" thread.

Just a thought...thanks for your consideration.

I would tend to agree with RyanS' comment from the WWSM thread that, if anything should be done, the Hattrick thread should be turned into a general soccer gaming thread. On the whole, though, I have mixed thoughts about taking FM/WWSM out of the main OT board.

Dola, this answer from Ryan in the FM thread looks a good idea too:

If enough people want a new forum, it might be better to turn the hattrick forum into a general soccer forum as it is not getting much traffic these days.

SD is not a fan of the beautiful game, so I doubt it will be happen. Great thought though. I would love to have a dedicated tactics thread where we could all work on tactics together or share thoughts on that, versus the "post your killer tactic" type of threads in the SI tactics forum...etc.

My arguement for it is based on selfish reasons:

There are many times in which I would post something in the one FM thread we have that could either lead to a whole discussion, or is an important question to me that I am guessing others might gain from knowing the answer as well. Many of the times it gets lost in the thread. Topics such as training and different strategies/ideas for it, the effects of certain parts of the game on other parts, blah blah blah.

I agree that an FM sub-forum would be nice. I have several discussions I would like to have about the game but it is difficult to have in one single thread or hope people see my other thread if I start a new one...

Although SD is not a fan of the game, why does everyone think that he wouldn't create a subforum for it? We have subforums for Hattrick and Werewolf and I doubt he is fan of those as well. So where does this belief come from?

The other option is to forum-jack the Hattrick forum - but that's in pretty poor taste.

As a Hattricker, I have no problem with that. Though I still think it'll be helpful in there to have threads like:
"HT: How Are the Devs Screwing With Us Now"
"FM: Using a 4-2-2-2-1 like a pro"
"FM: For n00bs"

i.e. deliniating which game you're talking about (if possible) in the topic subject line, as there are occasions where something comes up for those of us still playing Hattie to talk about...

I still want to try to play FM/WWSM but it's really a game that overwhelms me, so much so that I don't know really where to start and I end up taking pages upon pages of notes, which then just becomes like work (i.e. not fun, especially when I can't write longhand without my hand hurting).

Someone probably needs to give SD the link to the index page since the only game sub-forum is FOF2007 (unless I can't see others). Hattrick is an online league, if I recall.

FM

There was a poll a while back which showed that FM was just as popular here as FOF. We had always enjoyed discussing games that interest us, to the point where we had a stickied table of contents that had links to such text sim games. I don't see a need to have one for each of the ones he listed but I would believe that an FM would generate quite a bit of discussions.

There are some forums, like the SI official ones, but they don't get a lot of love by FOFCers plus those forums are not so newbie friendly, and in all them, basic soccer knowledge is supposed as are crowded mainly by Europeans where soccer is the #1 sport, so Americans new to soccer or FM could feel overwhelmed and not comfortable enough to ask basic questions.

Here are the reasons of why i think a FM subforum is asked for here:

- Right now as Cringer said, we have only an FM thread every year, that is a mix of small dynasties, reviews, real life soccer, FM advanced tactics, soccer basic newbie questions etc so it's a real mess and so hard to find anything into it. At least that is a reason enough for me to barely read or post into it, when having a subforum, i would be willing to talk way more about it, as soccer is the sport i know the most and FM the text sim i have been playing since more than 10 years ago.

- We all love FOFC and it's members and prefer to stick to this forum that to discuss FM in another forum. I could have an FM forum setup for FOFCer's in 2 or 3 hours, but it wouldn't be FOFC and I prefer to expend my forum time in one forum than in some different ones.

- FM is probably the most played game here along with FOF, so it's not like requesting a sub forum for every game played by 2 or 3 persons.

- In FOFC we have a good mix of FM newbies, FM vets, Americans not used to soccer, Europeans that breath soccer etc, plus we have an over time built friendship that would make way easier to help new players and complete noobs asking basic soccer/fm questions. We all are also text sims fans, and FM is probably the most played and also complex text sim available.

Imho mixing the Hattrick and FM forums wouldn't be a bad idea if you don't want a forum only for FM. Maybe you can mix them in a "Soccer games and soccer talk" sub forum where we all can discuss real soccer and soccer games without disturbing the other large group of FOFCer's who doesn't care about soccer, the same way than the Werewolf players have their forum to not to disturb the non Werewolf players.

As we know you don't like soccer or FM, it would be probably a pain for you to moderate, so you can have Frogman (if he wants it) or any other soccer fan and FOFC old timer with enough online time and who wants that moderating job. I offer myself volunteer if needed, but still think Frogman would be the perfect fit if he wants it. That way you won't even need to look into that forum ever :)

So i put on my knees now and request that subforum for us soccer and FM fans (and remove the games reviews subforum that is useless as we all start "All right boys..." threads in the offtopic one for new games anyway) :)

I'm more interested in the breadth than the number of posts. There aren't any more people posting in the FM threads than in the OOTP or BBCF or Civ4 threads. There's actually a slighter higher number in OOTP and BBCF than FM, and the highest FM thread number only leads the Civ4 thread by 141 unique posters to 120. If this can be justified for FM, then it can be justified for at least three other games--and I didn't bother to check the console game threads.

That's why I liked my idea I posted in the other thread. Keep the topics here in the Off Topic forum, but create separate subforums for FM, OOTP, BBCF, etc. that contain RSS feeds of those topics. To me, that kills two birds with one stone. First, it keeps the threads in Off Topic, where they will receive the greatest number of views, and second, it serves as a single aggregation point to view all posts on a particular game.

I would have no problem having my title changed from "Hattrick moderator" to "Soccer moderator" or whatever a new forum would be and take on the moderating duties for said forum.

I know you've seen how the WOOF's RSS Feeds work. The issue we're facing here, though, is that FOFC's doesn't work that well, I assume because we're on a much older version of vbulletin here. Let me look at the CP...

Well, it will take all of 2 seconds to change "Hattrick Forum" to "Hattrick / FM Forum" so I don't see what the big deal is.

"Why don't we just use the Hattrick forum anyway?"

Because it would tatamount to an un-offical forum-jacking if we do it. If The Dark Jedi does it, then we can tell the Hattrickers to "just deal with it".

FM is a long standing series where the creater is more or less an established member of these boards who contributes to other threads often enough. Not sure how often Sid posts in these message boards. :) BBCF is a standalone game without any sequels thus far.

I really do not see the point of having another thread for FM. The issue with Hattrick and Werewolf was that all the threads being created were cluttering up the forum. That is not the case with FM. There is maybe two FM threads on the first page right now.

I gues that's how we got the HT forum back in the day, so maybe that's the only way to go.

Sure there are not many threads about FM, because we've kept it all clustered in one crazy thread, but there is the potential for so many discussion with that game that I'm certain we could fill a new forum easily...

This seems as good as place as any to ask, so... My brother and I are looking to get back into the FM series after a brief layoff. What we want to do is run a network game where we can play over the net, whenever we get the chance. Is this possible? Also if it is, is there really any difference between FM and WWSM other than the name?

I'm good with our little hattie forum getting jacked for other soccer related stuff. The hattie talk has pretty much died down, for the most part, with interest waning and that'd be a good chance for other stuff to go there.
