Ahh, the $EC is at it again..
This was disappointing to see for the Georgia players that weren't involved in any of this. People such as the Hayes Twins and Ezra Williams among others.
But hey, you have to hold programs that do things like this accountable for their actions. From the looks of it, I believe UGA did this to kind of save themselves a bit from future sanctions. There surely must have been some very serious findings for the school to have taken this step though.. Possible Major Violations.
I have always been a big proponent of stiffer penalties for programs that are found guilty of breaking rules. There has just been too much of this, "Well they got rid of everyone involved so lets be lenient on them".. I believe we need a return to TV Bans, longer Postseason Bans, and more strict limits on available Scholarships for schools that cheat, and if need be the use of the NCAA's Death Penalty. I think this would force school administrations to take more seriously exactly what is going on in their athletic departments..
In the end if that University hires a "Bad Apple" and cannot montior the actions of one of its athletic programs, they deserve to suffer the consequences, regardless of how many or how few people were actually involved. That is what being a part of a "team" is all about. If one person or two people break rules, everyone suffers, just as it should be.
Also, if a school does have to serve some type of probation due to violations that occured on a particular Head Coach's watch, that Coach should also be put on probation for at least that same amount of time, and not be allowed to coach at a NCAA school during that time..

As an alum, this is certainly embarrassing, but I remember the mood on campus when Harrick was hired, and it was basically, "Why'd they get this crook?"
I'm not buying for a minute that Harrick didn't know what his own son was doing, or that he wasn't aware what was happening with this fraud.
I've heard people saying President Adams should get fired, and frankly, that's BS. The man made a poor decision hiring Harrick, I agree, and ultimately that's his responsibility. BUT, it's to his credit, and that of his predecessor (I'm ashamed I can't remember his name, but he was there my Freshman and Sophmore year), that UGA has become a more respected, multi-faceted, multicultural academic institution, wheras in the 80's and before athletics ruled the roost.
I say this was the best decision that could have possibly been made, given the circumstances.

Here's a none too flattering article on UGA Athletics from CBS Sportsline.com (http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/6243000)
Of note, this is the 6th Time a Major Violation in the Ath. Dept. has occured at UGA in the past 25 Years.. The article keeps referring to the number 4.16, as in UGA gets in trouble an average of once every 4.16 Years..
Obviously there is a problem in the way "business" is handled in that school's Athletic Department. Let's hope, for UGA's sake, these most recent violations finally give the University the kick in the pants needed to finally get things cleaned up.

As an alumn also, yesterday was a very bad day. I really felt embarassed. I too was none to please about the hiring of Harrick, I was living in LA when he was fired from UCLA. I really feal bad for the kids, in these cases, the coach gets fired and paid and just goes on with his life and will eventually get another coaching job. The kids are really punished because they can't play in the tourney, they basically are forced to leave school early or transfer (and have to wait a year) or stay and play for a team probably on probation. I was actually hoping the players would get a lawyer and try to continue their season. As for blaming the president, well he did hire Harrick and he deserves to bare some blunt of the blame. I was a senior when Tubby was in his first season and all the positive that he brought to the program is gone. I hope they go out of their way to hire someone with the upmost integrity as the next coach, which shouldn't be easy.

I disagree with you completely. If Adams doesn't want to be called to the floor for hiring Harrick, he should have let Vince Dooley handle the hiring/firing in the first place. The Harrick hiring was completely his decision, and he has to bear the biggest blame for this. He preaches more accountability college athletics when he hires this snake and allows him to tear apart UGA's basketball program.
Adams acted as the AD in Harricks hiring, then he should pay the price other AD's have when who they hire gets caught in Major violations.
