When looking at scouting report from the sim window for your next opponent, you are given YPC averages for running left, middle, right for both offense and defense of the upcoming opponent.

For the defense, when it says "left," does it mean the offense of the opponents of your upcoming opponent's average YPC running to its left (which would be the defense's right) or does it mean what I've always though it meant, in that "left" meant runs at the left side of the defense of your upcoming opponent (which is the right side for the offense of prior opponents). I'm embarrassed to say I might have had it wrong all along.

IOW, if the scouting report shows for the defense of your upcoming opponent that "left" runs have been incredibly successful, should I be concentrating on running to the left or the right for my offense.

Hmmm...good question...I've always pictured the Xs 'n' Os diagrammed out and when the offense is running to the left of their formation, the right side of my defensive line is responsible. So, if they have a high average running to the left and I give up a high average to the right I figure I'm in BIG trouble.

I'd be curious to know which interpretation is correct.

I'm pretty certain that the left and right refer to your opponent, so your right side matches up with their left side and vice versa.

In one of my SP games the left side of my O-line was great at run blocking & I happened to notice somewhere in the stats that my team was way better at running to the left than to the right (& had loads more carries in that direction too), so I'm confident it works this way.

In the Scouting window screen, left for offense = left for defense.

A one-game test shows this:

Offense for San Francisco:
Left: 9-40
Middle: 6-76
Right: 4-6

Defense for Arizona:
Left: 9-40
Middle: 6-76
Right: 4-6

So it should be read as:

Offensive stats for Rushes to the Left side of the Offensive line
Defensive stats for Rushes to the Left side of the Offensive line

FWIW, this also lines up with Rushing Defense in the Team Statistics screen.

Nice...learned something new today. Don't know why I never thought to test it but I guess I just assumed I was correct. I guess my logic of assuming that when somebody running towards me goes to his right, my left, that my stats on the left side would be impacted must be faulty.

Am I the only one who has misunderstood this all along?

Nope, your not the only one. :(

A follow up since I've wondered about this as well.

Can I assume then that my defensive right end and tackle defend primarily against runs to the left?????

For sure not, i also thought their left attack was against my right defense.

Good question too as i'm now confused too if that only relates to stats but also to alignments in the game, i think there are some threads related to this and some tests done, time to use the search button.

Would the best way to test this be playing one game, and seeing what the stats were on each team?

yes, this would have to be the case otherwise something is very messed up.

Which is what I did above. :)

And was done a number of times previously with the RDE/LDE thing, although that's harder to confirm due to the assignation of tackles, etc.

Thanks for the info Celeval. Opposite of what I thought, and embarassed to say I never thought of testing it via a single game of stats. Always learning.

I am almost positive that the LDE matches up with the LT and the RDE matches up with the RT. It makes sense considering Rex assigns your best DE to the LDE slot.

No that is not the case. The left side of the offense matches against the right side of the defense and vice versa, as players are slotted via the depth chart.

If that is true, then I don't understand why Rex would recommend your best DE to play LDE instead of RDE.

The game pretty clearly has a variety of judgments underneath its selection of where to auto-slot players... this happens at FL/SE, SLB/WLB, FS/SS, and I'm sure other places. I don't think it's fair to assume that the apparent slotting of the "better" DE on the left side indicates something relevant to the "side of the offense." I think it's probably a more benign explanation that relates to FOF as a computer program more than as a football game. Something like "the AI depth chart routine fills the LDE slot first, and then the RDE slot.... fills the FL slot first and then the SE slot... and so forth."
