All-Time League

I thought I'd see what kind of interest there'd be in a league that randomly draws players from football history and pits them against each other. Here's the gist:

1) anyone who played in the NFL (or AFL) between 1960 and 2004 would be eligible for the initial stocking of rosters. Why 2004? Well, because it's 45 years after the first season, and it's allows for the fact that the guys who started in 2005 or later still could change their "overall" rating.

2) Players (there are over 12,000 of them) will be given a random number, sorted by position and overall peak, and this will determine when they enter the league - either at the beginning of the league - or later as a rookie through the draft.

3) Players who start in the league will have a random career-point drawn and this will be their starting point. So we'd have a realistic spread of player ages throughout the league. There will be vets and there'll be young guys as well.

4) We'll use the historical draft files for each player's ratings-start as they enter the league. This will include players from 1960 thru today, and each year I can add the real-life draftees to the potential pool for each new season.

5) I will pull 65 players for each of the 32 teams to begin the universe with - that's 2080 players. The spread of talent will be appropriate.

6) Players' heights and weights will be adjusted. The average offensive tackle in 1960 was 6'3 and weight 285 - in 2004 that same position's average was two inches and 30 some-odd pounds bigger. So the old-timers will get bulked up so they won't be undersized when taking on their modern counterparts.

I did this with an OOTP league that ran for over 45 seasons and was a lot of fun and much beloved by its participants. Hopefully a football version would be as much of a blast.

I've got all the player rating seasons (65000+ of them) all set. All I need to do is randomly draw the pool and setup the league. But first I wanted to see if there are 32 people willing to participate.

Things such as whether we'd start with a draft or random rosters will be open to discussion.

This idea is on hold since I've signed on to commish the AFLAC league. Until I see how things work with AFLAC and AUFL, I can't commit to running a third league.

I also just discovered a pretty big hurdle I'll have to clear to do this: I don't have FOF 2004 which is the only version that has a draft file creator and without it I can't create the custom draft files for the league. So I either have to find a way to get 2004 - which isn't sold any longer - or find someone who has it and can send me the draft file creator or, possibly, someone who has it and would be willing to convert the csv files.

Once AFLAC is underway and running smoothly, I hope that I can either find the time to do this league as well, or hand-off the commish duties for AFLAC to free up some time for this league. I've been wanting to do this league for a long time and most of the work is already done, it's just finding time to do it, overcoming that draft file hurdle, and making sure we have 32 guys willing to participate.

So in the meantime, sign-ups can go on, with the understanding that it could be a couple months before this league would start - and the possibility that the draft file thing will be too much to overcome.

I've been thinking it might be cool to do this with fictional teams - let everyone get creative. Even better would be if someone with some graphic skills would sign on to create some cool graphics.

The draft file issue is taken care of, so there's nothing to stop this from happening once I make sure AFLAC is squared away and running smoothly.

i do like the idea of fictional teams, half the fun is the new logos and designs of your teams. we do need someone to do the graphics for logos and helmets and such, as me, and probably a lot of people around here, don't have access to some of the amazing logos i've seen created. this is a great idea if we can find someone for logos.

i would love to take credit for it, but no, i found it on the internet (wish i could say where, but i just googled team helmets or something) and then changed the colours and warped the logos (which again are just from google - couldnt draw to save my life...thats why god invented photoshop!)

Ive done a few more and figured id just keep going, so that there's more than enough for people to pick the ones they'd want.
unless everyone was thinking of going in a different direction. Im cool with that too.

I just spent a couple of hours with an intern at work googling all types of possible football names. the possibilities are endless....Im all worn out.

It looks like this will be a go since the interest seems to be there. It should be a unique league in that it's going to mix players from all different eras of football. I'm going to include pre-1960 players as well, so guys like Sammy Baugh, Jim Thorpe, Bronco Nagurski etc will be in the mix as well.

Ive just been doing some searching for old logos of these ancient teams for our helmets etc, and came across the story of the pottsville maroons.
Following that i have decided to change my mind and take charge of those maroons, to help bring them back to glory

Yes, the league is a go. However, I'd like to warn everyone up front - because of work and a family vacation in late March, it'll likely be April before we actually get started.

I'd like to start with a draft. I could randomly distribute the players if the majority would rather dive right in and have no say in their opening team roster.

As I said, my preference is a draft, but it obviously would take a lot longer that way and I know some people would rather not take that much time before actually starting play. So it's a balance - do you want a say in the makeup of your team, or would you rather get started right away.

At some point in the not-too-distant future I will get a website & forum set up and all the GMs can vote. I can't be more specific about when because it depends on my schedule. I want the site to be very nice, probably something more similiar to AUFL than the AFLAC site I set up. Though there are advantages to both sites, AUFL has a nicer look, IMO.

Since we're not starting until April-ish is there a way to do a draft during March and then once Legend is ready to go we can allocate the rest of the players. I've never done a re-draft in a football league and I don't know how much work it takes so I could be way off base. Is there a way to possibly draft anywhere between 10-20 rounds and then just split up the rest of the players.

Like I said I've never done anything like this before so if its too difficult I understand completely as I'm just rambling off the top of my head right now.

The term 'inactive' makes the league sound dull. How about something with Classic in it? There's already a CFL in real-life in FOF land, plus I feel like everyone uses League at the end. Hitting up thesaurus.com gives me some ideas:

i like using the word 'gridiron' (more oldschool for our league) than 'football' or even better is 'paydirt' (dictionary definition is 'profit, success' - very fitting)
i also like the sound of 'heroes' or/and 'legends' like legendsport suggested.
Pasacaglia's idea is good too of trying alternatives to the word 'league', like 'alliance'.

1) the website is up. Click here (http://hallfb.simsportleagues.com) to visit "The HALL" & if you've signed up, create an account and vote in the polls - which brings us to...

2) I've decided to allow people to vote one player from each decade of NFL history into the league (that's 1920s thru 2000s).

More on "Pick a Player":

There will be three polls per week, as we get closer to the actual draft. All the players are members of the official NFL "All-Decade" Teams.

The polls will be put up in groups of three. The first three (1920s, 30s and 40s) are up right now. I will also roll out short vignettes on each candidate on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week (1920s vignettes are up right now).

There's also a section of the league forum, under "News" where you can discuss the candidates, and make a case for your favorite.

The winners of each decade will automatically be added to the initial player pool. Their starting point will be random, but weighted towards early-to-mid career so that the chances of coming into the league as an older, on-the-way-out vet will be slimmer than for other players.

The site is still very bare bones, but it will get fleshed out as we get nearer to actually getting started.

The league's still at least several weeks from the draft beginning. I think we've decided to go with either defunct or fictional team names so do you have an alternate choice for team name?

A couple of things while we're still in the infancy of the league.

This will be a one game per week league. I want the league to succeed and be immersive, with the website resembling the AUFL site, and I plan on writing more game stories, doing player pages and so forth. Therefore each and every game stage will require a significant time commitment from yours truly.

To be able to accomplish that, plus keep up with AUFL, AFLAC, my hockey league and my actual job, I can not commit to twice weekly sims for the HALL.

I wanted to get that out front before we go too much further down the road so that anyone who will have a problem with it can get out before investing a lot of time.

Game stages will likely take place on Wednesdays with a midweek stage on either Monday or Tuesday.

Cool! I like the logo on the first one, could we do it with a black helmet and orange as the secondary color (where the light blue color is now) with white accents and borders (sort of like the bengals except with the black being the primary rather than the orange) - so the black/dark gray is still black, the white parts of the logo are still white, but there's a white border around it so that it can be seen on the black helmet. Keep the facemask white I think too.

How about this for the color pallete for the Sabres - orange for the primary color in the logo, gold for the helmet, blue for the areas that would have been black, and keep the teeth and eyes white, facemask blue. (I wouldn't be this picky except I can tell you enjoy doing those :-) )

I like the black one the best but it's too close to the Dynamos, you're right, I don't want a black helmet. The white one is growing on me. I also threw the gold one into Photoshop and adjusted the color more towards orange and got this which is cool:

I like the white helmet but just feel like I need something more colorful :-) The teeth look cool but the powder blue is too pastel for my taste ;-)

I already made a helmet for the steamrollers (you can find it on the 'avatar' thread on the HALL website). It was based on the only logo i could actually find of theirs. If you like it, great. But if not, let me know and ill fix something else up.

Nope, I can do it right now. We're waiting to have 32 people to run teams. Given that I lost 6 GMs in the first season of my AUFL league, I'm not going to start a new one unless we have 32 to begin with (which AUFL did, so that's no guarantee of long-term health either).

I think what we have here is probably six or so guys who are really pumped about the idea and about 15 others who think it might be cool and signed on, but wouldn't care one way or the other if it didn't happen, and then there's those 11 or so empty slots.

If we don't fill by the end of April, I guess I'll pull the plug. Maybe the MP community is just oversaturated right now.
