1. Russell Sheppard came out today and said Michigan is as of now atop his list assuming they don't get Pryor. What're your thoughts on him?

2. I see the Permian Panthers are doing well after a drought. I am a huge Friday Night Lights fan and I was wondering how different things are there 25 years later? Is it still a shit hole or what?

Dola - Yes it's early on Shep, so I am not getting my hopes up, but it's pretty apparent he is UM's #1 target for next year which is why I ask.

Sheppard is the best athlete in the country, no doubt. He's Pat White + 2 inches. I would not count on him leaving the region.

I am not getting my hopes up but his video makes him look like a stud. It'll be a battle to get him up North, but one thing RichRod has shown so far is he is persistance.

So IMTG - What about Odessa? Anything of note that you know about it?

Odessa is not a particularly nice place to live. Midland has all the oil money, Odessa has all of the oil field workers.

Anything in Texas west of, say, Fort Worth is pretty awful.

As long as we have this thread, any impressions on Kapron Lewis-Moore, the DL Notre Dame just signed away from Texas A&M?

I remember in the new version of FNL there was an afterword where they explained how the townspeople/PTA went into a bit of an uproar and focused more in education in the few years after the book came out. Permian came back to prominence with Roy Williams at WR, but unfortunately Midland Lee had Cedric Benson.

Permian came back strong this year on the back of stud OT Garrett Porter, who committed to Texas today. And their new coach is supposed to be pretty good.

I don't know a whole lot about the history at the decline, all I know for certain is that their head coach left and things went downhill after. They may have even split into two schools or something, I'm not sure.

And let me add this about Sheppard: If he doesn't end up at Texas, then I hope he goes to Michigan. Then I hope that Texas and Michigan play in 4 straight bowl games, and UM obliterates us in record setting fashion, each victory more vicious than the last. Even that won't be punishment enough for the stupidity we displayed with Sheppard today.

Only Mack Brown could fuck up a slam dunk like this. I swear to Sweet Baby Jesus we turn away more Rivals stars than any other team in the country. I guess we have our pride that we don't beg, lie, or cheat like the SEC or Colorado's donors, but dammit it's frustrating.

OK, rant over.

IMTG - I don't follow recruiting much, what'd Texas screw up with Shephard?

I don't think it was a screw up as much as it was being honest. They basically told him that they couldn't guarantee him being "the" QB, since they also have a commit from Garrett Gilbert, along with Chiles and Harris only being Sophs next year, and asked him how he would feel about switching positions if he ends up being down the depth chart at QB. He said he really would prefer to play QB, and all he asked for was a chance to compete for the QB spot. Here is his quote:

“I said that really all I wanted was a shot,” he said. “Honestly, if I get a shot at quarterback and I don’t win the job, I’ll move to another position. I have no problem being an All-American wide receiver or an All-American defensive back. I just want a chance to play quarterback.”

The thing with Shepard is also he will be early enrolling so this recruitment will be done by December though he said he wants to commit in September. It will be a hectic several months for him

1. 5 star, transcendent athlete
2. from the heart of houston
3. other good players from there look up to him
4. is cousins with Craig Loston, one of the best DBs in the country for 09, who is also from Aldine Ike, and would have no interest in us unless Sheppard comes here. Now he'll probably go to OU and kick our ass
5. loves Texas
6. is willing to switch positions if QB doesn't work out
7. our dumbass OC is only effective when he has a QB who can ignore his dumbass playcalls and make plays on his own, like Sheppard can

and we tell the kid that he won't even get a shot. Why? Because Mack Brown seems to want to make everything as difficult as possible. He won't even tell him that he will get a fair shot, even if Gilbert is promised the job. I just don't understand what runs through the head of our staff sometimes.

No, they wouldn't tell him that he would be a QB. The Gilberts made Mack promise that they wouldn't take another QB in the class, so we are putting all our eggs in that basket despite the fact that Sheppard will be better on the field and for the program, and isn't afraid of competition like Gilbert seems to be. And every other time we loaded eggs into one quarterback basket, it backfired on us (Bomar, Perrilloux, Brantley, etc). This is like rooting for Al-Queda.

Jeeber - You are the only person on the planet that thinks El Paso is even remotely livable. Even illegal immigrants bust ass out of there ASAP.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Sheppard not commit on Junior Day. I know LSU is trying to get involved, though I understand it's a long shot. Still, it'd be nice to see. I know we are in on Jacob Karam (I think he has OU's list) and it seems clear like we are looking to Texas again this year to get a stud QB.

Not very good. Stiff. Don't expect much.Oh well, he's the #2 DE and probably #4 of the 5 DL we signed.

I think KLM's future is at DT, personally. He's got decent size, he's just not fliud enough for DE, i don't think.

Re: Sheppard - I think he's going to end up in Austin, even if it means we lose Gilbert because of it. There isn't anyplace else he wants to go, like Jermie Calhoun last year. And unlike Calhoun, we actually want Sheppard.

I think he'll commit around the end of spring practices.

He's got decent size, he's just not fliud enough for DE, i don't think.Notre Dame runs a 3-4 now, and there is only 1 returning player that saw major time last year, possibly 2 if another gets back in for the fall semester. So if he fits the mold of not quick enough for DE, not big enough for NT, maybe 3-4 DE is the place to be.

Could be a good fit for him then.
