View Full Version : Should I skip class tomorrow to see Chelsea Clinton?

I'd be forfeiting a 15 point perfect attendance bonus for the class and it's U.S. Multicultural Lit. We're discussing the first 100 pages of D'arcy McNickle's Wind Beneath an Enemy Sky and it's the first real literary class discussion we'll be having (the class up to this point has been solely background on the Native American/European-American interactions of the 19th and 20th centuries).
It isn't a hard class by any means, just a 200-level Gen Ed course, so it's not like it's OMG i r going 2 fail if I miss a class, but I do kind of hate to lose the 15 point bonus and it's always useful to be there for the first real discussion to see how the prof directs it and what his alleged biases are (and indeed, this certainly seems to be one of those outwardly agenda type profs).
But on the other hand, I enjoy celeb visits and I can see what Chelsea's like in person (as much as a publically moderated, obviously-campaigning-for-her-mum Chelsea can be herself in person :D).
I'll probably go, because I'll not get a chance like this again. I was just curious to see what FOFC thought. :D

She's gonna be completely surrounded and you probably won't get a chance to see her at all.

Go to class, it's not Hillary. It's Chelsea. You could get a gauge of her "personality" on YouTube.

15 bonus points or some C-list pseudo-celeb?
Sorry, but if this is even a question for you then I'm once again reassured that the world has truly gone completely mad.
And I'm talking Charleston Heston here

Still debating on this.
What I may do is stop by there after my first class and if it doesn't look worth attending, then I'll go ahead and go to my second class.
If it does look worth going to, then I'll cut.

If Lou Lamariello was in on this thread, he would be making the case for why Izulde doesn't deserve his 15 points despite his perfect attendance, exemplary performance in class, and contribution to a great classroom environment.
And I thought the Islander fans were stuck debating who got the better end of the Yashin for Spezza/Chara deal?

My wife once skipped class (well, she left class early) because she wanted to go to a hockey game and get a bobblehead there.
She is a college professor, and this happened last week. Hey, don't tell any of her students why she ended class early, OK? I'm just sharing this with you people.

It's a blowoff Gen Ed course and it's the only college course I've ever taken that gives a bonus for perfect attendance.
Which I forfeited today. :D
I'll post more later, but I've got to run to Stats now... but let me just say, Chelsea was dynamite.

It was much the same format as the Madison visit, where she fielded questions about her mother's campaign, etc.
I found her quite polished and accomplished, far more than I expected with an incredibly strong understanding of the issues. She had a personal touch and sweetness that went over extremely well with the audience here, which was evenly split between campus staff, students and elderly townies.
One thing that surprised me was just how lax the security was. Just two police officers who did nothing about crowd control. No Secret Service around and no sorts of screenings at all.
To me, she spoke extremely well, with a poise and confidence that was both genuine and refreshing. Is she a firestorm type, able to electrify a crowd? No. But her honesty and earnestness make a terrific tandem with her intelligence and awareness, at least at this particular forum.
She's much prettier in person than in pictures and I'll admit I grinned a bit when she pointed me out after I raised my hand to ask a question and said, "You... the gentleman in the hat."
There were a couple questions, mostly related to her mom's plans for addressing privacy concerns and Hillary's stance on medical marijuana where she skirted the issue without really answering the question as asked, but for the most part, she was very articulate and gave in-depth, expansive answers that showed a pleasing understanding of all facets of the issue raised.
I wound up leaving after an hour, because I had to get to Statistics and while I could justify skipping U.S. Multicultural Lit, I couldn't do the same for Stats, but my overall impression is that she did superbly here and likely converted quite a few people in the standing-room only crowd to voting for her mother in next Tuesday's primary.

Secret Service doesn't protect Chelsea anymore. Or if they are, it's only for this election. Bill is a former President and they stop protecting children and grandchildren of former Presidents after age 16. GWB won't even get Secret Service protection 10 years past his term, based on a new law that passed in 1997 that made Bill the last CinC to get lifetime protection from the Secret Service.
