Alright boyz, it's Valentine's Day '08 (or will be in a few mins). What did you get the missus? Me, I'm single so I don't have to worry about it.

Well, I don't think it's stupid and pointless, but we don't do presents. I'm taking the evening off, she's making dinner, and we'll hang out and go to bed early. The best kind of Valentine's Day as far as I'm concerned.

I think Valentines Day is just another over-marketed cash cow. But I'm also too smart to not organise anything with my gf. We're going to dinner at a nice Japanese place, $110 each for a 7 course meal (not incl. drinks). We also bought a big box of chocolates for each other last night.

Well I am getting my girlfriend flowers and dinner. And outside of the married folk I think the rest of you guys are full of shit and just like to hear yourselves talk on a message board.

Is it a BS holiday? Of course. But I have yet to meet an unmarried woman (and I also met very few married women) who don't think Valentine's Day is a big deal.

Do you guys also refuse to get your moms anything on Mother's Day? That holiday has zero historical significance.

I am single and I think its a bullshit holiday. It has no meaning to me whats so ever, mother's day is different because thats my mama and I'll be damn if you say my mama has no significance. :) Seriously though it is a BS holiday created just to make guys spend money for the same sex they have gotten before... wait was that too much? Yes it is a BS holiday. I wish they would market the Steak and BJ day more.

In any event, of course my wife goes with the "oh you don't have to get me anything..." statement which in womans talk means "you better get me something".

I had ordered 2 dozen roses and a crystal vase for her and made reservations at a really nice italian restaurant downtown on Saturday Night. Sent her an e-card this morning since I always forget up until the actual day that I need to get a card most likely because I always put it off.

I'm so tired of cynicism. It's just as lazy as blind adherence to tradition. It just makes people feel cooler and more intelligent.

Anyway, I understand that it's a commercial holiday (what holiday isn't?), but it's still a fun excuse to get a babysitter, go out to eat, and have some fun. Sure, we do that other times as well, but Valentine's Day just seems more.....festive.

I still remember how fun it was in school getting all of those Scooby Doo, Smurfs, Etc., postage-style Valentine cards. And then in high school, always having the whole rose-sending thing. That one was always a little nerve-wracking, but it was fun too.

gottimd
02-14-2008, 08:38 AM
I think that elementary school tradition should be carried on. I remember taping up my brown paper bag on the chalkboard and the class would put their cards in every ones bag and then you would spend some time opening them up later on in the day.

I think I am going to try and revive that with my wife. Tape up two bags on the mantle and put our names on it and put a card her bag.

Then throw a tantrum when there is no card in my bag and sulk the rest of the evening calling her snot face.

I swear to god, there are some people at my office (those left - heh), who think I'm just some huge asshole for not getting my mother anything. One, she has Mother's Day, Two, she's married. Not to me. My dad doesn't get my mom anything for mother's day (spouses, in my book, are off the hook for mother/father's day once their children are supporting themselves), and I'm not on the hook for Valentine's Day.

Last few gifts for my wife have been jewelry so I went a different direction: She likes games as well, so I got her a Nintendo DS Lite (thanks to the help of a FOFC member who found one and shipped it to me - I'm not sure if they wish to remain anonymous.) Also, got her a few games for it. Also, I'm brining home a dozen roses. This is the 10th anniversary of when I proposed. So after I get home from work, I'm cooking the same dinner that I cooked that night, Chicken Parm with Spaghetti. Also, will do the same thing - candlelight dinner and then some romance afterwards.

I haven't gotten my wife flowers in years.... so I got her 18 long-stem roses. I also got my mother roses. Usually I don't even send her a card, but I figured it'd be a nice surprise. I generally agree that VD is a racket. Not as bad as Sweetest Day, though.

Historically, it usually worked out that I wasn't dating anyone and was alone on Valentine's Day, so it is definitely not one of my favorite "holidays".

OK, Google to the rescue. No wonder I've never heard of it...

Sweetest Day is an observance celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region and parts of the Northeast United States...

Sounds like a very stupid holiday, indeed...

It is described by Retail Confectioners International, as "much more important for candymakers in some regions than in others (Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo being the biggest Sweetest Day cities)" and an "occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed."[2] Sweetest Day has also been referred to as a "concocted promotion"[3] created by the candy industry solely to increase sales of candy.

I don't need it to be February 14th to go to a fine restaurant with my wife. If I want to get her roses on august 19th I will.

IMO it is idiotic that there is a so called holiday that makes people feel compeled to get their loved one a gift while being gouged in the process.

I guess you're just smarter than the majority of americans. Leave all of us ignorant yokels to our futile attempts to have fun.

Anyway, you're a newlywed. You'll learn soon enough that the everyday romance thing becomes a lot harder to keep up (especially after having kids) the longer you're together, no matter how in love you are.

I know this is very insensitive of me but I'm annoyed because I just got word that one of my 17 year old female patients is suicidal (mom is bringing her over to my office now) and therefore I'm probably going to be stuck late at the office. Risk of the business and I told my wife so before we got married, but I still feel bad that I'm going to be home late (possibly quite late for dinner.)

I'm actually quite happy to miss out on having to eat out tonight. Alas, my wife has her TOPS meeting tonight, and then she is going out to dinner with her mother.

I totally misread that first sentence the first time.

My wife is 24 weeks pregnant... I bought a dozen roses and will give her a footrub either before or after we watch Survivor and Lost, most likely. :)

I agree!

I missed out the first time around, so I've been DVR'ing them on Tuesday's on TBS. Last night the first one was when Ryan brought Michael to speak in his business class... great stuff! :D

Didn't have a valentine this year, but it's all good, I'm still enjoyin' it.

Happy Valentines to every one else, tell me how it went for you guys.

Oh, and I found these on a forum I go to, thought it'd be funny. They're valentine cards. Haha.:

Heh, apparently one of my dogs back home just had a seizure of some kind.

This day just keeps getting better and better.

Last time I had a good Valentine's Day was elementary school... 20 fucking years ago.

No wonder I hate this fucking holiday.

What'd I get my wife for Valentine's Day? Not a goddam thing.

Which is exactly what I got last March 14th. I told her then, "yer gonna have a weakass Valentine's Day, next year for this.

Hmph.
