It's reading posts like these that make me love that I am passionate about all four major sports in the U.S., as well as college basketball and football, and about soccer as well. There is never a down time for me. Every month brings new sporting joy from somewhere. I love football--and I won't miss it one iota for the next seven months, because of my love for the excitement of March madness, the constant presence of baseball, the drama of the NBA and NHL playoffs and even the progressing MLS season.

It's a bit of a mix between FIBA and NBA. Has NBA styled timing (12 min Qtrs, 24 sec shot clock), with largely FIBA(ish) rules. Surprisingly high level of talent too, especially amongst the guards. A few of our league's premier teams swept a trio of upper-tier Euro league teams in exhibition games last year.

One name to watch out for in the NBA draft next year; Nathan Jawai. This guy is a 6'11 21 year old native Aussie MONSTER who is dominating our league in a Shaq-like fashion. Quality bigmen are rare down here in Australia (due mainly to the fact that all the top level bigs are earning big bucks in Europe), and it looks like Jawai will be one-and-done and off to the NBA this year.

Do you think this Jawai kid can compete in the NBA, or do you think he's benefitting from a lack of bigs in the Aussie league?

Do you follow St. Mary's at all? They have three Aussies on the team...should be around come tournament time.

I think Jawai has the physical tools to compete in the NBA. He is a big, strong boy, and he dunks the ball every time he gets near the hoop. He has that rare mix of size and athleticism that would already put him among the top tier of those categories in the NBA. What he doesn't have is experience against guys his own size. Who knows how he'll handle that, but there have been multiple NBA teams sending scouts down to watch him all season, so clearly there's some interest. He's listed as a "late first rounder" on most mock drafts.

And yup, been keeping a very close eye on St. Mary's. Our ESPN network airs a few games a week, usually of the college teams with Aussies playing a big part (St. Mary's, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Washington St., etc.). I'm a massive fan of St. Mary's PG Patty Mills. Saw him for the first time last year on our national team when we qualified for the Olympics, and he's done even better in Div. 1 than I expected. He was pretty spectacular in St. Mary's win over Gonzaga last week (or the week before), and that was on an off-shooting night.

MLB doesn't even register for me. It sits somewhere around NHL and Nascar on the bottom of a long list of sports I'd watch on TV if I wasn't forced to.

Surprisingly though, while I was in Japan I got hooked on the Japanese baseball that was on TV pretty much every night I was there. No idea why I enjoyed watching that but can't sit through 2 minutes of MLB.

I enjoy the pace somewhat, simply cause there are so many games to watch that time of year. First round series really needs to be 5 games though. It could be compressed a little bit more though, as there are way too many 2off day breaks, when it should merely be one day breaks for travel, and back to back games at some point.

I haven't followed the NBA regularly in about 10 years, but I'm inspired to get into it again the second half of this season.

Part of that is the Celtics kicking ass, but the league as a whole just seems to be firing on all cylinders with great young players, and competitive playoff races. The top 9 teams in the West are within 4 1/2 games of each other, setting up a great close to the season

I just think it takes away from the drama. One of the greatest things about the NHL playoffs is they play every other day that by the middle of the series the 2 teams hate each other. I think the NBA looses alot of steam with the long breaks between games.

Hear hear! Although I'm not into the NHL, I love everything from the NFL to the NBA to MLB to college football, basketball, and baseball. The sports seasons are so perfectly timed that there is always something right around the corner to look forward to. Every time something you love comes to an end, there's another thing ready to start up to get excited about. There is really no offseason. It's great.

I just can't get into the NBA anymore. Once John Stockton retired, I stopped paying attention during the regular season. Being a Grizzlies fan now doesn't help, as they're never getting past the first round of the playoffs, and they'll be lucky to even get to the playoffs these days.

For me, I stick with the NFL during the fall, the NHL during the winter and spring, arena football during the spring, and summer is pretty much dead. I used to love baseball, but I don't care much for it anymore. I only follow the NL Central now, and I only keep up with the big league teams. I don't know the names of any prospects or anything like that. It makes it hard to discuss the game with anybody.

I guess I didn't mention college sports. I like watching college sports, but I don't really follow them closely outside of New Orleans or Memphis basketball and Seton Hill or Memphis football. I can pretty much sit and watch anybody play, but I generally don't know who the best players in the country are anymore.

So I guess the dead period for me is summer. I'm fine right now. The NHL trade deadline is coming up, the AFL season starts in two weeks, and then March Madness is right around the corner. Good times.

I don't understand this logic. NBA teams basically DO play every other day -- early it was commented that the NBA stretches it out to 2 weeks. Playing every other day for a 7-game series takes 13 days(not counting the day after the last game). There is sometimes a two-day gap, but it's close to every other day. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

ESPN has a deal with the AFL to show one game a week. Unfortunately, unless you have a local team, that's all you're going to get. I only became a big fan of it because I had a local team down in New Orleans, and I went to most of the home games there. Without having "my team" to cheer for, I probably wouldn't have much interest.

There aren't really any major college stars playing in the AFL. There have been some good college players who have made an impact in the AFL like Michael Bishop, but even he moved on to Canada. The league is mostly made up of players who came from small schools or who never had a chance at the NFL to begin with.

I know I talk about arena football a lot here, but unless you have a particular allegiance to a team or to an individual player (like a guy from your own school or something), it's really hard to get into the game. That's why I have trouble with soccer. I just don't have an attachment to anybody in that sport, so I don't follow it.

I'd definitely recommend it, but not sure how easy it is living outside of Minnesota. Might be able to do alright with the FSN package that gives you different regions, but it is certainly great here getting nearly every Gopher game televised along with high school games every so often along with the state high school tourney. Also, I haven't been to it yet, I'd like to attend the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship some year.

I accept that this is most likely a personal hang-up on my part, but you know what has turned me away from MLB, NBA, and college sports a little bit? It seems like a lot of people don't consider you a real fan unless you know every player, every prospect, or every top recruit. I know I alluded to that in an earlier post, but that's what gets me. I can't fault people for wanting to really research their teams and their teams' futures. That's fine. I feel like I'm unable to have any type of real discussion about the sports. I admit that I feel kinda stupid.

I know that it comes from easy access to information. There are message boards for every team, there are stats and videos galore, there are columnists who keep up with everything, and that's great. I just don't feel like researching all that stuff. I just like sitting and watching a ball game. This'll make me sound old, but I remember maybe 20 years ago, the Cardinals might call up a new pitcher, and he'd be a complete mystery to me. I'd just watch him pitch or look at a boxscore and hope that the guy would turn out to be good. When that happens now, it's like all the baseball fans know his entire scouting report and his shoe size, and I feel like I'm the only one who's never heard of the kid.

Again, that's my fault for not wanting to keep up with all that stuff. It's just that I feel like I can't enjoy some of these sports anymore because I no longer "get" them. I end up sticking to things like arena football because nobody else gets it but me. :(

Welp, it's good to see that this is how we're supposed to feel. Let me forget the great feeling I had in 1995 when the Devils won their first Stanley Cup. I'll slap myself silly for jumping up and down when Jason Arnott scored the Cup-winning goal against the Stars in Game 6 in 2000. Ken Daneyko being on the ice for the final shift in Game 7 in 2003? Fuck that.

I'll just throw this motherfucking New Jersey Devils 2003 Stanley Cup DVD in the garbage, since the NHL is truly irrelevant. I'm glad to know this now. I just wish I hadn't wasted my money and the hours I spent watching that DVD. My life is a disaster.
