I hope that the current trend continues, it would be a pleasure to smack this jabronie around for the next few decades..

"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

"Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

It's kind of like Fidel being replaced by Raul.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see where he said anything incorrect in the bit you quoted. Here in Atlanta, I see Braves #1, Yankees #2 in terms of ball caps that people are wearing...Red Sox don't register.

Who is he arguing against? That's the silly part of all this.

"Red Sox Nation" is just some buzz-word invented by a columnist to describe all Red Sox fans collectively, wherever they exist. (And they do have a pretty wide spread geographically, if only because there's like a billion Boston college students and no jobs or affordable housing for them in the Boston area).

Agreed. I think he's correct that the Yankees have more national pull than the Red Sox. I know more Yankees fans down here than I do Red Sox and I actually see Yankees caps on people I don't know. I never see Red Sox gear down here.

steinbrenner is just showing an inability to understand what RSN means with this quote. I doubt anyone thinks there are more RS fans than Yankee fans.

Ya, I think people are missing why the comment is dopey.

Tomorrow maybe he'll go on a rant about how there's more Yankee fans than Astros fans.

Same here, plus that nice little football team that plays outside of Boston too, the Whalers is it?

I see more Yankees gear out here than Red Sox gear, but I think it's mostly worn by gang members and other assorted scofflaws.

I've always seen lots of Yankees gear, but the Red Sox pulled even right after they won the world series a few years ago.

I suspect if the Sawx go on a 4-5 year world series drought the fans will disappear as well.

In the early part of this decade I would go see a Red Sox-Rangers game every year in Arlington. Even then, before their WS win in 2004, a good 25-35% of the fans in the ballpark were wearing Red Sox gear.

When the Yankees play the Angels, it's a good 50/50 split out here in SoCal. When Boston plays, it's about 75/25.

But I think Steinbrenner is more or less correct

Rob Neyer blogged about the NY Times article a bit today, but the stuff that made headlines about the Sox wasn't what he pointed out. It was the intro, which says a lot more about this douche than the Sox comments, IMO:

Hank Steinbrenner was driving like he owned the place. "This thing's got no pickup," he said, gunning my midsize Hyundai down Steinbrenner Drive in Tampa, Fla. We had just finished lunch on a January afternoon at a Steinbrenner family favorite, an Italian restaurant called Iavarone's, and were on our way back to his new office at Legends Field in my rental car, which Hank had insisted on driving. As we approached the ballpark, he steered the car up onto the curb, drove it on the main walkway, between the Yankees merchandise store and a small memorial park devoted to Yankee immortals, and came to a stop just a few feet from the tinted-glass door marked "Executive Offices." "This is where I usually park," Hank said, stepping out of the Hyundai and tossing me the keys.

Whether he is right or not, why is Hank Steinbrenner talking so fucking much?

Because he's Hankenstein, and it runs in the family.

Everytime I hear or see "Red Sox Nation", I laugh. It really is a joke. Totally fabricated.

Hell, I'm a huge Red Wings fan, and I've always hated the "Hockeytown" thing. It's kind of like PMing Skydog and requesting a special title (no offense to those who have done it ((as long as I like you, otherwise, you're a tool))).

This is "winning country"

Win a lot and people wear your hats and shirts. Lose a lot and they don't.

I went to a Nuggets/Bulls game during the Jordan era. The place was at least 35% Bulls fans. I went to a Bulls/Nuggets game last year and I may have seen 35 total people in Bulls garb.

The Yankees are one of the few that buck that trend (along with the Lakers, Cowboys, Rangers, etc.) Of course that's because of them being in a huge city and having won a million titles.

The Sox aren't that far behind in Denver. If they were to go off and win 3 of the next 4 or 5 titles, the Yankees may have something to worry about here. (unlike the Patriots, the Sox would be cheered on simply becaue the non Yankee fans always want the Yankees to lose)

After the Yankees long grip on the highest road attendence, the Sox passed the Yankees last year.

I also think it's beyond funny that Hank is bashing the Red Sox for their Red Sox Nation stuff, yet a good 2 years after Red Sox Nation phrase was born in 2004, the Yankees felt the need to come out with their own "Yankee Universe" phrase which shockingly has yet to catch on.

I always thought "Red Sox Nation" referred to the fans of the Red Sox as a group (however large or small that group is). It is nothing like the phrase "America's Team" which implies that one team is America's favorite.

Shrug.

I've always thought the same thing. Sox fans are 'members' of Red Sox Nation, not that the whole Nation are Red Sox fans. Just an excellent way for the Red Sox to sell more stuff.
