We're back! This is the third year of the FOFC Hardcore League (FYI, The companion football league, FOFC Alternate Rules Football just finished it's 3rd year as well: 2007 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=60329), 2006 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=51190), 2005 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=41688).). The league is a weekly H2H league rather than Roto and we try to get in a slow, live draft so you have time to think about your picks.

Previous Years: 2007 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=57541), 2006 (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=47230)

Who Can Join
Preference goes towards members who were in the league last year. However, there are always some who don't come back so there are open spots. The league will be open exclusively to previous members until noon tomorrow. Then anyone can join. If you weren't in the league last year and want to get on the waiting list, put your name in now as it is first come, first served.

Signing Up
WHEN YOU SIGN UP, PUT A NUMBER NEXT TO YOUR NAME. I have saved a text file to my desktop with 12 numbers that will determine the draft order. Has a bit of an odd pattern to it, but that's Excel and RAND() for you.

Alternatively
Lastly, I know we're not as hardcore as you could be. So, if you want that, Toddzilla has created what looks like a great league:
2008 FOFC Extreme Baseball League (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=64074)

Some rules commentary

One minor change to stats. As Toddzilla mentioned last season, K/9 is redundant with K's tho one is a rate and one a counting stat. Instead, added in quality starts as it's a really good stat to measure the value of a starting pitcher. This gives another positive counting stat to W/SV and K with 2 rate stats of ERA and WHIP, and a negative counting stat in L. I feel this short changes reliever sa little and I'm just not sure how to help that out except by adding holds or blown saves which would very much overvalue RPs. Any thoughts?

Also, I increased a few positions but hopefully they are in proportion so as to not unbalance pitchers and positional players. I added a MI, CI, and OF to go along with the pitching changes (next paragraph). The bench has been increased to 5 from 4 to make up for the additional 5 active players.

Another SP has been added as has been a "P". I'm not sure I like the "P" as that opens up some loophole room but we'll go with it. Last year, I ran two leagues with weekly IP limits and 35 was just fine but 40 was too much. With an extra SP and P, I would think *42* would be just about right as if you have short lived starters, you could use that extra P for SP but with longer guys, you could go RP. Problems with injuries arise, of course, but realistically, even 5 starters should go at least 7 if not 8-10 times per week and average 5 IP per start.

Two years ago, we did daily changes. Last year it was weekly. Any thoughts? I think weekly provides more of a challenge whereas daily is more fun.

Nothing's in stone yet, of course. But the closer we get to the draft, the harder it is to change things. So, any last thoughts before I create a thread later on today?

We're going to have to go with a "quicker" live draft with time limits of maybe 6 hours as 21 players for 12 teams is 252 so that means a lot of players will need to be drafted. I'm also toying with the idea of having the first 15 rounds or so be slow, live draft and the rest be list as we will likely run out of time.

If you want to retain your spot in the order above, you need to post a number by noon tomorrow. Otherwise, you guys get bumped. But you did post first about it so you go where you are above to be fair. We should have more than enough spots for everyone.

I went with 11 for you since, in theory, 2 and 3 are claimed by people on the waiting list and I'm trying not to double up for confusion.

Also, join up in the league if you want. You're guaranteed a spot since you were in last year (and didn't go inactive).

Had a minor update. Didn't realize there was a Japanese game this year on the 25th for a kindof opening day. So, the draft will have to be done by the 21st or there will be a quick draft that night (the 21st is a Friday) to finish.

Add Innings Pitched. It rewards starters who go long in games (i.e. the good ones) and throws a bone to decent relievers. IMO its the most underrated fantasy stat we have.

But how does that help in a weekly H2H league where there's an innings limit. Either you get full points for IP or you get 0 pitching points.

Well, I guess not. Now that I think about it, it rewards people for adding to their counting stats. You can qualify and still get more IPs. However, it does bias the category towards whoever has more 2 start guys that week.

With IP, the league would almost certainly have to be weekly changes so that people don't just load up towards the end of the week with WW fodder. Any thoughts on weekly vs daily changes? Anyone?

Personally I like the strategy aspect of weekly changes vs daily. I have more time than most (I'm guessing) to play with daily changes, but if not every owner can have that sort of access it's definitely better for the league to go weekly imho.

Also, Red Sux and Exploding Methlabs, not sure who is who between Celeval, TazFTW, and allpro10050. Hell, Exploding Methlabs could be a fine Kansas City fan, for all I know, considering KC's standing as a meth lab capital ;)

As such I don't know who hasn't signed up. Either way, there is one free spot open right now to whoever signs up and posts in this thread. If the other spot isn't claimed by the third of the three above, then it will also open up at noon tomorrow to whoever else signs up and posts in the thread.

This will be updated in the draft post. I still need team names for DeTox Rox and Celeval.

The settings are now set, so to speak. We will be going with those roster spots, those statistical categories, and weekly changes.

Lastly, time to go back over the draft as it's a pretty rigorous schedule. From the draft post:

There are 6 hour time limits between the hours of 8am CT and 10pm CT on weekdays. Hopefully we don't have to enforce this but we almost always have to a couple of times during the draft.

Also, a little addendum to keep people checking every night and morning. If you had more than an hour the previous night (the previous pick was made at 9pm), you get 1 hour in the morning (until 9am) to make your pick. If you had less than an hour, you have 2 hours in the morning (until 10am). We have to keep this moving and we need everyone checking every night and every morning if it's near their turn.

On weekends, we'll just go with a standard 6 hours with no morning/evening provision but let's try to keep things moving.

If there are problems in that you know your pick is coming up but you won't be online, submit a list either to myself or to a proxy drafter for you. Otherwise, you will get the next player on Yahoo's list. Maybe pick someone who is on the opposite end of the draft from you so that you likely won't be grabbing from the same pool of players anyways.

So make sure to check every evening and morning. Also, remember, if we aren't done by Thurs Mar 20th at noon, there will be a quick live chat via AIM on the evening of Friday Mar 21st (7pm CT) so make arrangements for that.

Ok, my fault for not reading. ;)

I liked it last year.. that way we could see who has been taken.. I guess you'll find a away to make a chart or something?

Another SP has been added as has been a "P". I'm not sure I like the "P" as that opens up some loophole room but we'll go with it. Last year, I ran two leagues with weekly IP limits and 35 was just fine but 40 was too much. With an extra SP and P, I would think *42* would be just about right as if you have short lived starters, you could use that extra P for SP but with longer guys, you could go RP. Problems with injuries arise, of course, but realistically, even 5 starters should go at least 7 if not 8-10 times per week and average 5 IP per start.

How many pitcher slots do we have? I'm new to the league and the above says "Another SP has been added". I only see 1 SP, 2 RP, and 1 P slot.

Good call, checked the yahoo site and that's how it's listed as well, something funky is up. Can't remember offhand what we had last year but it was 2 each of SP, RP and P that we had to start on a weekly basis wasn't it?

Ok, that's really, really weird. It must have bork'd the settings when I went to change up the stats.

Here's how it should be and it's updated in rules post (or will be once I finish this post): SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P.

(not that we should need it, but to clarify, if we have to autopick, it will be by Yahoo O-Rank, not Rank as "rank" is just where the stats were last season)

EDIT: Good news. As long as I edit in the draft as we are making it (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/156646/draftresults (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/156646/draftresults%29)), then when you go to players page, you can just see who is left on the board and not all players. I think this is new to Yahoo this year. But the long and short is, it makes it easy to track who has and hasn't been taken on the "players" page and if you go there, you will see who is left (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/156646/players ).

My bad, Toddzilla had PM'd me with his pick but I hadn't been able to check until just a few minutes ago myself. Damn work.

SILOL - I had him slotted in round 21, so I was a tad surprised too.

Sophomore season this year I think? Other than that, he had a stellar year last year.

I'm going to bed - is this supposed to continue over the weekend, or is the next *required* pick on Monday?

sterlingice
03-07-2008, 08:44 PM
It continues over the weekend between 8 and 10. However, the timer doesn't reset in the morning so that picks have to be made at 9/10. So, for instance, the next pick has to be made by around 10ish tomorrow because it will have been 4 hours tonight and 2 tomorrow.

Cool - if I'm up and not around, you've got a guy to pick for me if need be - but I'll be checking in.

Thanks a million for running the show btw - great job so far!

I have a pretty busy weekend with in-laws in town and being on call but hopefully we can still move the draft a little. I'm sure lots of people have similarly busy weekends.

FYI, If people don't get their picks in and I'm not awake tomorrow morning, here are the next 3 players on Yahoo's list:
RP Joe Nathan
CF Chris Young
2B Ian Kinsler

The next pick is due at 10:15am (CT) tomorrow morning and if there is no pick by then, Pool Parties will get Joe Nathan and the draft will move on. But we're only halfway through the time so I'm sure we'll move some.

Also, remember, if you know you'll be out, you can submit a list or partial list. If I or someone else gets a partial list and all the players are gone by the time a pick is due, then the clock starts and nothing is lost.

That said, I don't really plan on being awake at 10:15am tomorrow morning if I can help it. ;)

I hate to go closer in H2H but he's the last elite one since Nathan runs a good risk of being dealt and you know someone like the Yankees would go "he's a great closer, so let's have him pitch the 7th for us".

Not only that, but last year, there were never closers in the WW pool and it's going to be even worse this year when you can go 3 closers with that P spot so everyone expecting to pick up cheap saves in rounds 20+ is going to find out that everyone else is...

I'm heading out for a couple of hours- need to run a couple of errands before the inlaws arrive, but worst case scenario is that my next pick will be around 3pm. But that means allpro, Lathum, Lathum, allpro, and detox will have had to pick by then...
