I'm trying to book a flight from Detroit to Phoenix, but I'm pretty flexible about when the flights are. Here are my criteria:
Departure after March 16.
Arrival one week (roughly) after departure.
Arrival before April 7.
I figure with all these options, I can get a pretty cheap deal. However, do I really have to search every date to get the best deal? I thought about just calling an airline or a travel agent, but I figured there might be some way I can book it online. Any ideas?

Looks pretty clear to me, Lathum.

Try Orbitz http://www.orbitz.com. Click "Flexible dates" on the left-center side of the home page, and you can enter your criteria.
EDIT: I think Option 3 on the flexible-dates page is what you need.

this is what kept coming out of my brain. :)
I imagine Passacaglia wants to go to Phoenix for one week and travel not before March 16 and return to Detroit before April 7
which means depart Detroit from March 16->March 31.
i gues.

The weeklong flight is probably going to the toughest part of this to find.

I thought the fact that it was round trip was assumed.

book one flight to phoenix and if it takes less than a week, book two flight back to detroit. if that less than a week, book four more flight back to phoenix. if you have not been in the air for a week, maybe air travel not right for you.

I was confused by the title alone. I thought we could now randomly ask FOFC'ers to be our secretaries. I almost posted a "Get me some coffee" thread.

May I be completely nosey and ask what you're doing in my neck of the woods Pass? Will there be a "Meet a Pass" thread?

Unfortunately, no -- the flight was for my father-in-law. And lurker booked the flight herself yesterday, so all my "work" (i.e. a half-hearted search of a couple web sites, and a post on FOFC) was all for naught.

I wonder what kind of meal service he'll get that week he's in the air?
Like, maybe a dinner and 2 snacks? And 1 free soda? They only have so much room in the galley. Pack some food, Pass's father in law!

I think it would be military rations. It's going to have to last you, so they'll probably be some really high-calorie meals. There will probably also have to be some sort of water recycling system on board to make sure everyone doesn't die of hydration before landing.
Also, they'll probably have to bring some lemons and limes along to avoid scurvy.

The good thing about a week-long flight, though, is that any jet lag becomes insignificant.

kayak is the best ive found. they search each airline individually, as well as orbitz and cheaptickets and all those. and can search for flights around your dates too, if you are flexible.
but they dont have flights that keep you in the air a week. yet.

Since the last plane crashed, this time we need to send two planes. If both those crash, we need to send four. What are the odds the flights will crash 3 times in a row?

Now it all makes sense... it was for your father-in-law.
I'm actually interested in booking a plane ticket for my mother-in-law.. but would like her to stay on the plane for a few years.. where should I look for that?
