View Full Version : FOFC Chicago NFL Draft Get-Together?

If I recall, we tried to do this last year at CW's place, but it fell through at the last minute. Any interest in trying to get it going again? Maybe we can do it at a public place -- I thought bw3 (why do they call it bw3 anyway?) worked really well for the last get-together. Anyway, I figure the draft is a good time for it, since it's pretty FOF related, and it provides plenty of time for people to chat, or play poker, or whatever, without missing any real action. The draft is April 26-27. What do you guys think?

Apparently, CW-led get-togethers end up with him not showing up.

Or so I'm told.

We should really get these kinds of things going for several areas. I know we have a large Texas crowd as well.

If that happens it would be neat if we could do it in a place with internet access and then we could perhaps Skype them together and have a virtual connection as well.

I'd be willing to offer up my place as a Texas meet area. I've got plenty of space, big TV, fast Internet connection, huge ass BBQ grill, and an always stocked beer fridge. And the Salt Lick is right down the road in case we run low on food.

Was that where you DT and I met? If so I would suggest the place that we had the NC/Lathum gathering was far superior in terms of being a good place to watch sports while socializing.

Do not blaspheme the Piper. :)

It has 3.5 redeeming values.

1) Close to me.
2) They pour a good pint of Guinness.
3) Me and the staff are friends.
3.5) Due to #3, me and anyone I'm with get a LOT of free booze.

I think this is an important thing to take into consideration. The place where we met NC and Lathum was perfect, I thought, with lots of TVs at good angles. The place where lurker and I met hoops, BK, and AE during the Rose Bowl wasn't as good for that. Since this is the draft, it's not like we need to have several TVs -- just one will do, so we can see when trades and picks are made. Do we want wireless there for any reason? I think Lathum brought his laptop, but couldn't get it to work, so that's something to think about. But I thought it was a good place -- and if Lathum and Mr. Wednesday can make it again, it'll be more convenient for them.

Fridays event starts at 12 and ends sometime in the wee hours of saturday =) the saturday event starts at 7am (good god don't they know we're gaming geeks???) I was going to sign up for the sunday event as well, but its a team event and I don't have a teamate, and on top of that it gives me the day free to meet some peeps!

Okay, this thread got confusing fast. Any weekend is probably good for me -- lurker will be studying for an exam she's got in May, so the more I'm out of her hair, the better. Meeting some of the out-of-town people coming in would be cool, but I also think the NFL Draft would be fun, too. Anyone in or near here have thoughts (Lathum, you gotta make it over here before moving to Seattle!)?

Ok folks, I will be in Chicago (crown plaza O'Hare) the 11th-13th. I would love to set a time Friday or Saturday evening to get together with any and all FOFC-ers who cna make it.

So whose around and willing to actually meet?

Barkeep49
04-02-2008, 10:52 AM
Well I'm currently available either night. I'd love to get something together, especially as O'Hare isn't the drive for me that most of our get togethers seem to entail.

Passacaglia
04-02-2008, 10:58 AM
I think I'm available either night, but Saturday might be better for me. If I recall from when I had a seminar there (at least I think it was there), parking is something like $22, and $12 if you have permits, so we should probably see how many permits RendeR can get his hands on (they give one to anyone who stays there, so maybe you can ask around for some), and see if we can get some carpools going.

RendeR

I can always meet you all somewhere else as well, we don't have to come to the hotel. Its going to be swamped there anyway. I'm probably blowing of the gaming tournament for the most part. My army sucks ass =)

We should plan this for someplace other than the hotel, there are 2 conventions going on at once and the parking thing is very limited it seems.

I'm blowing of most of the gaming event anyway to have a last hurrah so to speak with the GF. So we'll be taking in the sights n sounds of Chicago all weekend long.

Anyone whose going to be available for say a saturday afternoon/evening meet up drop me a PM and I'll give you my cell # so we can set stuff up as we get closer to next week =)

Depends on what you want to do BK. We'll be at the hotel Friday, probably not doing much but relaxing/crashing and enjoying the pool. Saturday we're hitting the field Museum, then trying to meet up downtown with Pass, CW and possibly hoops if he can finangle it =)

If any of you are willing to chaufer us around it'd save me a butt ton in parking fees *laughs* on top of not knowing the city at all. I'm liable to get lost =) I could certainly park somewhere near the museum and then we could ride with someone for the rest of the day.

I'm open to lots of suggestions. Though I'll pass on relying solely on the trains/buses. I've never been good with public transit, but if you can convince me its simple and doesn't waste tons of time I might be willing to give it a shot =)

So, as I noted in my PM.

I'm suggesting tasty beverages and a good dinner. Ruth's Chris if people wanna pony up the cash for a damn fine steak, or there's plenty of other places to go as well.

Maybe a trip to ESPNZone after dinner just for kicks. But as I have to catch a train home, I can't be out in the city too late.

Barkeep49
04-08-2008, 04:30 PM

Its looking like a dinner-time meet up at this point. 6-ish seems to be the prevailing theme in our PM's thus far.

I'm taking Liz to the Field museum in the morning then we're going to get some pictures from the top of the tower after which we'l see what time it is and look to meet up with folks (anyone who wants to hang out during any part of this can meet us sooner too!!) I can phone people when we're headed to Sears Tower and we can meet there, sort of collect pepole as we go =)

OH:::: what time is the last train back out to the airport?? I want to be sure we get back to the hotel =) LOL

The last train to the airport is pretty late. Are you taking a shuttle from the airport to the hotel? That might be a bigger concern. Otherwise, if I remember right, your hotel is closer to the Rosemont stop. But you should check the weather -- someone told me it was supposed to snow this weekend.

RendeR
04-08-2008, 06:45 PM
Yeah, we'l have to decide the best course once we get there and see how the weather is. If it stays cold and windy we may not want to do all that walking =)

Mine's unofficial except for the prescription, but hey, I can relate! Haven't had anything to drink tonight though.

I'm actually seeing a psychiatrist now.. not a psychologist, actually a freaking psychiatrist. I finally realized that I had been dealing with depression since grade school.. dawned on me that perhaps this means that the problem is, I dunno, CHRONIC? And so I made an appointment with my primary care physician and told her to refer me to a psychiatrist. And she identified that I'm one of those "lucky" individuals that doesn't respond well to anti-depressants. Go me! So now I've been taken out of work while she uses me as a guinea pig and hopes we stumble upon something that helps.

I probably shouldn't have said all this on a message board.. especially one frequented by a psychiatrist.. but hell, I'm drinking :)

Fifteen years of therapy for me, and I still get fairly regular depression episodes when not on meds. The funny thing is that talk therapy doesn't really work for me anymore because I have a pretty good grasp of my problems, so my appts are mainly for prescription maintenance. I usually change meds after a few years because the efficacy lessens (or I decide that I don't want to be on them anymore and stop -- antidepressants are weird things), and it's hard to find the right replacement/dosage.

Sometimes playing werewolf helps. ;)

My previous therapist was a total waist of time and money. The one I saw this week was pretty good.. but I might switch due to insurance issues (gotta talk to the psychiatrist about it). And yeah, I understand stopping.. you either decide "I'm all better now, I don't need these" or "these aren't doing jack shit for me so why should I bother?". But right now I'm working on slowly stepping off an anti-depressant (Effexor XR) and moving to a mood stabilizer (Lamictal). And I quit playing werewolf because I couldn't handle the stress of that while dealing with my toddlers... actually, I stopped playing after having a fight with RendeR that was related to werewolf.. but I did feel guilty about ignoring the kids and letting them play while trying to catch up with werewolf around deadline time.

That's because the people afflicted with such things die of disease or starvation before they recognize said affliction.

That's not very helpful for those of who do not live in the third world.. and/or who are interested in someday getting back into playing werewolf :)

That's because the people afflicted with such things die of disease or starvation before they recognize said affliction.

That's not very helpful for those of who do not live in the third world.. and/or who are interested in someday getting back into playing werewolf :)
Maybe if your husband wasn't a digsuting fucking asshole and was at home supporting you and not out with Fucky McPirate it might be going better for you.

Maybe you don't agree.

Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but since becoming a dad cavorting with pirate booty while a clinically depressed wife who may also be on the road to alcoholism is left alone to deal with a couple of kids doesn't seem like such a good idea as it once might have.

*sigh* Well that'll teach me to post while tipsy...

I've been dealing with depression my entire life. RendeR has been more than supportive for the over-a-decade that we've been together.. but if he did nothing but take care of me 24/7 he would have burnt out long long ago.

And he's not really leaving me alone with the kids.. I made it clear to him that if he was going away for the weekend he had to make arrangements for me to have help, and he has. He's worked with my family and his to make sure that the kids and I would have support the entire time.

Then please rest assured that depressed is ont on the road to alcoholism (Been there, I watch over that quite strongly) and we have family members lined up and set to take care of the kids and Telle for the entire weekend.

So yes, your idea of things would be a horrible and assholish thing to do.

luckily I'm not doing ti that way.

As for cavorting with pirate booty, its not pirate booty if everyone involved knows and accepts it, now is it? We live a certain lifestyle, its not for everyone and lots of people disagree that it works, but for us, it does. please keep your judgments of our persons to yourself regarding that, thank you =)

When you deliberately whore for attention, you're pretty much obliged to take what you get. I'm sure that's not a problem, right? Lots of people here are (again) talking about you. That was the real goal here, obviously.

Ok #1, I was not whoring for attention, I was making a joke. get over yourself.

#2 thank you for reopening the thread, if it was you who did so.

I take the comments I get as give, i have no problem with how people feel about how I live my life, they have everyright to their opinion, they do not however have the right to judge me based on less than ALL the facts, and since they will never have ALL the facts, they shouldn't be jugding me at all, now should they?

have a nice day ;)

Kudos for giving her backup and for keeping an eye out for warning signs then.

As far as judgements go, I am less concerned about the actual moral issues concerning your arrangement as I am for the well-being of your wife and family. I'm not a doctor*, but my guess would be that as part of her depression (and I might have guessed this before this admittal) Telle has dealt with self-esteem issues. Agreeing to a relationship where she allows her husband to have a relationship with a young, thin, attractive female (I still have a hard time - knowing women - thinking that this was mainly her idea) while she accepts the role of "mom" wouldn't seem to help this, though that's just an opinion, one given from a detached viewpoint. And I'm only giving these opinions after this latest bit of information and as the topic has already been broached in a public forum.

* I did satisfy the requirements for a degree in Psychology though!

I probably shouldn't go here...but my question (which I don't expect you to answer) would then be if this is because you were looking for gratification outside of the relationship, or if you had some feelings of guilt that you were not providing your spouse with the gratification that he required/deserved, and as a method of making him more happy you proposed that he look for other sources for this gratification (or as some sort of "release" from whatever perceived burden you had put on him by needing his help and support with your depression).

Ok, I guess I need to delve into the history of all this...

Very early on in my relationship with RendeR, I found myself getting very close to a male friend of mine and falling in love with him. This obviously put a lot of strain on my relationship with RendeR.. eventually leading us to break up while I explored "other options". After some time, I chose to get back together with RendeR.

Then a couple of years later, I found myself getting close with another male friend and falling in love with him! And I was like "What the hell? Is this going to keep happening to me?!" While I was trying to sort through my feelings and what it all meant, I came upon the topic of polyamory. It was like a lightbulb going off. There ARE other people who love more than one person at a time.. and I learned that you DON'T have to choose.. it's actually possible to have a relationship with more than one person at a time! I presented the idea to RendeR.. and he was understandably less than pleased. We talked, and we talked, and we talked some more.. we had numerous crying sessions. And in the end, we decided to give it a try.. taking small baby steps at a time into it, while continuing to talk and talk and talk some more.

And here we are, about six years later I think.. and both very happy with our marriage and with continuing to be polyamorous. And yes there ARE times when my depression is really kicking my butt and stress from our unique relationship adds to it.. but so does the stress of being a mom, the stress of our opposite work schedules, the stress of only having one car, and a million other things. And I've been trying really hard lately to work on identify when there are tangible things that are bothering me and I communicate with RendeR to try and help.

Any more questions? :)

Bk has it right, excellent time had by everyone!!

Morton's is fracking AMAzing, oh my lord the food was out of this universe. Thanks again on that one BK!!!

I have to say, I really HATe big cities, but I think I'm crushing hard on Chicago. The place is clean, its well organized and easy to navigate. There are simply butt-loads of things to do and see.

Friday Liz and I hopped the Blue line into the city at 4pm, spent hours simply wandering downtown from store to store (that Macy's simply rocks the world) found this really quaint little diner for dinner and the shopped till nearly 9pm and hopped the train back to Rosemont. I can't do that as easily as that here in Buffalo!

Saturday we went downtown again and walked from the train stop to the waterfront park where that huge-mongous fountain is and then turned east and walked to the Field museum. Great time there, though i was underwhelmed by the fantastic creatures exhibit. It was rather poor. 1 star out of 5. The rest of the Museum was outstanding and well worth spending an entire day wandering through.

We went back to the hotel to change for dinner. The weather turned cold so Liz opted for jeans instead of her new dress (damnit) but it was better as it was seriously nasty weather.

met Pass and BK at the train stop and walked to mortons. After cavorting with them we all headed back to our domiciles =)

Really can't say enough how awesome this trip was and its always kewl to be able to put a face and a personality behind the names I see on here =) pass and BK are two outstanding gents, quick with the jokes and full of great insights!!

Can't wait to do it again!

Oh and just FYI::

barkeep is NOT a huggy person ;)

Actually liz was thrilled with the idea of playing WW, but that requires dedicated "on the computer time" and she just does't have any of that available.

If I had to juggle her weekly schedule I'd go nutty. Thank god I have a quiet boring job where I can play on the laptop all night =)
