Sometimes I get the urge to just write... but I never know what to write about or feel like I have the time to sit down and just write random shit.

I basically made this thread wondering about the process, I know Drake is writing a novel, does he carry a pen & pad everywhere or allocate hours of the week?

I just feel like all of my creative energy needs to get out.

I am writing something for class. My process is as follows I wrote down the idea I wanted. Then I wrote my ideas for the ending(wrote three different endings) then I start from the beginning and work toward the ending.

I don't carry a pen and paper although if I have an idea I think would be cool then I would record it on my phone.

Writing down ideas is something that should always be done... Admittedly it's the one thing I don't do that I should be doing.

I know for my dynasties, I tend to do a lot of walking late at night, like around midnight or 1 am or or around 3 am (I avoid 2 am as that's bar-closing time) and just let my mind play with characters and situations, possible conversations, etc.

I always carry a small tape recorder when I am working on something. I have a lengthy commute and I find that drive tie is often my most creative. It works well for me because it seems thoughts are always better when captured spontaneously. Trying to remember until I get to a spot I can write it down at always seems to result in things being lost.

I'm the same boat, shorty. I've often said that I'd like to write a short story but I feel like I never have any good ideas or that everything has already been said. I guess the important thing is to just spend a few minutes writing each day and putting your ideas down and getting them on paper. You may find that this helps get your creative juices flowing.

Read Stephen King's book On Writing. It's entertaining and has some really good ideas on how to get started.

I prefer to cut and paste. In just about every instance, someone else has already written what I was thinking about, and usually in a much better manner.

One word of advice, Shane: TRAVEL. When you spend time in all parts of the country (or world), getting to know the geography, history and the people will give you a lifetime of things to write about. The most uninteresting people I've come across (in real and cyber life) are those that do not travel outside of their locales or regions.

I couldn't agree more with this.

Sorry, wasn't looking for sarcasm, but your general lack of courtesy has been duly noted.

I don't carry a notebook. Like BYU, I do my best thinking/planning on my commute. Thank God I've always got a collection of junk mail envelopes in my truck for scratching things down.

I'll also keep a Word doc on my PC with notes, ideas and snippets of dialogue for the project I'm currently working on.

But mostly, I rely on Post-It notes. The Post-Its, envelopes and printouts of the Word doc all go into a file folder that I use as reference material. On top of that, I stack articles and web printouts for any research material that I've annotated heavily and want to use later. It's a very disorganized system.

I don't keep notes on ideas outside the project I'm working on. I figure that if they're important (i.e., worth writing about), then they'll come back to me later. My problem isn't ever a shortage of ideas, just a shortage of interest in actually writing stories around some of the ideas that surface. Something really has to fascinate me on multiple levels to get to the "legitimate story potential" stage.

As you can tell, I've carefully honed my system with years and years of thoughtful tweaking. :D

The best thing about writing (especially short stories) is that you can just make shit up about anything. I'm a big fan of free association -- if you just spend 30 minutes writing down whatever comes up in your head, not worrying about content or grammar or anything else, you'll come up with some ideas. Or pick something at random and decide to write 500 words about it. I'll give you a start: Dryer lint. Go.

I think the content is adequate, I would like to see some different colors though. ;)

Colors other than default don't co-exist with all of the VB3 styles. :)
