View Full Version : Anyone interested in a free 1986 Strat-o-Matic League via SportingNews?

I think it can either be a draft AL/NL league, or a strict roster-only set.
They're making this free for a limitied time.. 3 games a night, so it'll take approximately 2 months to play.

Anyone else? You do have to register with Sporting News for it, but it is totally free.

How do you join the league? I've gotten as far as the "Fill out Your Draft List", and I see the FOFC league in the directory, but am too dumb to figure out how to join it. Do I have to fill out the draft list first?

I'll sign-up tonight or tomorrow since I am a Strat-o-Matic player from way back. I bought the board game with the 1990 season in 1991 and have been a regular since.

It's a live draft league, you shouldn't need to fill out a draft list or anything like that..

When I create a team, it takes me right to that draft list, with no option to join an existing league (and the link you posted just goes to the main sporting news game page)

Hmm.. Suicane got in just fine.
Step 1: Click http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/about/player_set_1986.html "Start your free team Now"
Step 2: Create team name, your name. Select Create Your Team (it should have 1986 preselected, since it's the free league currently)
Step Three: It should say "Team Created, choose your draft settings, for Live Draft or Salary Cap List Draft". Choose Live Draft
Step Four: Click on "let's go join a league!"
Step Five: Scan Down, find the link that says FOFC, click that, and the password is FOFC as well.

What does playing a game entail? I've never played Strat-O-Matic but it sounds like fun. Do I need to be present during the games?

Nope, it's auto simmed.. but you set the lineups, rotation, etcetera. The neat thing I've been doing with the other leagues I'm involved in is that when you click on a player, it shows you his Strat-o-Matic card :)

Ordinarily I wouldn't mind (and still don't necessarily) but is that the best situation during the opening weekend of March Madness? Not saying it isn't, just asking is all.
Assuming that's still good, Sunday afternoon would work better for me for the upcoming weekend. Friday night would suck out loud since I'm at a college baseball game with the extended family.

right now, it's scheduled for Sunday afternoon. we can certainly move it up or back.. I just don't want to try to have to wait two full weeks for the draft :)

If we can't make it for the draft, will our team get auto picked? It is highly likely that I won't be able to be around.

You can set up a pre-draft rankings if you can't make it (IE, take the highest ranked player from your list), or let the computer pick for you.

I'm not going to be able to make it, so the computer will have to draft for me. I'm not going to set any draft preferences, I think the computer will have a better idea of who to choose circa '86 then I would anyways.

Anyone interested in trading for the #1 overall pick?
Depending on the position offered. Id offer the first overall, and a 2nd,3rd, and 4th for another teams 1st rounder and a similar combination(probably a 2nd rounder).
I should ask, Are traded even allowed in this?

I don't think draft pick trades are allowed, but regular trades are allowed. you can have I believe a cushion of three or so extra players.

If this is the case and someone agreed to make a trade. I could just draft the player(s) and trade them to the accepting team after the draft.
For example, if I traded my first and third to Sir Fozzie for his 1st and 2nd rounder. We would just communicate via the life draft and I would take with the first overall pick who Sir Fozzie wanted me to take and he would do the same when my pick(8th would come up) then we just swap the players after the draft is over. I would assume this would work as long as we can communicate during the draft.

History was made in Fargo-Moorhead as Floyd Youmans(6-3) tossed a no-hitter and the Diamond Cutters defeated the Fargo-Moorhead Fillies by the score of 7to 0.
Youmans had his best stuff and was 'painting the black' with every pitch. A
beautiful game to watch. He walked 2 Fargo-Moorhead batters. The Diamond
players and coaches started to leave Youmans alone with his thoughts after
the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around,
you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an
explosion after every out. Diamond had a total of 8 hits for the game.
Sid Fernandez(8-5) took the loss. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 10
batters in 6 and 1/3 innings. When asked how his stuff was out there,
Youmans looked a bit incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied 'A bit
better than average, I'd have to say'

History was made in Fresno as Jack Morris(6-11) tossed a no-hitter and the
Fresno Farmers defeated the Diamond Cutters by the score of 3 to 0.
Morris had overwhelming stuff this afternoon. He simply never gave the
Diamond batters a decent pitch to drive. He walked 4 Diamond batters. The
tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd
was electrified. Fresno finished with 7 hits in the victory.
The loss was charged to Mike Krukow(13-6). He pitched 8 innings giving up 7
hits and no walks. It took a while to pry Morris way from his teammates as
they all wanted to show their appreciation and joy. Finally, however, chris
gerhart got to offer his own congratulations with a big bear hug and the
comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games I have seen in all my years in baseball - Morris was masterful out there this afternoon!'

Looks like the cutters are involved in all the no hitters....
IN all the games i played via computer or table top I cant remember ever having a strato no hitter.
