The best part about playing the Devils? I'll actually be able to get to some games. Not at the Garden of course, but in the brand new Prudential Center, which the Devils can't sell out on their own so it will be 60% filled with Ranger fans. I'll be at Games 5 & 7 for sure if it goes that far, and probably Game 2 as well.

Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum. The NJD-NYR series will be a bunch of 1-0 and 2-1 games. PIT-OTT might be some 6-5 games in there.

Also of note-- Jagr scored vs. NJ today. giving him 17 straight 25+ goal seasons.

Regardless of what happens I'm thrilled the Caps are in. There's a lot o talent on that team and the should be a Cup contender in the next few years.

I second that. Games 1, 5 and 7 for me. Jagr seems to be peaking right now, hopefully that will be the difference.

So here's what Pierre McGuire has to say about the Wings:

"It hurts me to say this, but I think the Red Wings are in trouble. I think they are an older team. I think they're in trouble because they're not a balanced offense. I think they're in trouble because their goaltending is unproven this year."

Wow. That's pretty fucking original Pierre. The Wings old? That's an incredible observation. Perhaps you could also mention how they lack toughness and will get pushed around by the likes of San Jose or Anaheim.

And their goal tending unproven? Completely. It's not like they won the Jennings Trophy this year or anything. Oh wait...

There are plenty of knocks against the Wings. They are far from a sure thing in these playoffs, but I would really like some expert/analyst to come up with something original and based on, oh, I don't know, facts or actual performance of something.

Man, I really hope we can sacrifice Colin White to take out Jagr. Not because the fear of him scoring, it's just that he's such a bitch I would love to see him get Lindros-ed. :woot: playoff hockey.

I don't know, maybe it's me or I'm just not remembering his early days well...but Jagr's play doesn't scream out "bitch" to me. The guy's about 240 lbs and plays like it when he needs to.

I'm really excited for the playoffs to begin. I hope the NHL is wise enough to build in several days of unnecessary days off so that my interest can drop down to a reasonable level before the games start.

How about the two full travel days between Games 2 and 3 of the NYR-NJ series? It's pretty important to have all that time to make the 7 mile trip.

Since when is 2 days (Monday and Tuesday) several? A couple days between the end of the regular season and the playoffs is pretty common, no? If anything, I think it helps build some anticipation, gives time for people to analyze all the series, figure out when the games are, etc.

Game 2 of the Avs-Wild series is Friday night at 9pm on Versus. Which is totally cool, except that they'll be joining that game in progress after the 7pm Washington game ends. If there's no OT, I'll only miss the first 30 minutes or so. No biggie - I'm sure there was a good reason to not have the game just start at 10 or something. Probably a conflict with midget trout fishing or celebrity bull riding.

One of McGuire's other arguments a couple weeks ago on NBC was another original: "They only have over 100 points because they're playing in the weaker Central division and have CHI, STL and CBJ to feast on"

it gets funnier. a week or so ago I was watching the Wild & Avs play and the Wild guys were going on and on about how much tougher the Wild were this year and how much different it was going to be for the Wild in this postseason. And I'm thinking, are any of those guys even going to play???

There was a little incident at the end of Sunday's game involving Lappy and Gaborik. Lappy grabbed Gaborik's stick and Gabby pushed at Lappy. The two eventualyl traded a couple of lame blows but it wasn't much of a fight. I was shocked they each got 5 for it instead of roughing minors. Heck, Lappy didn't even take off his gloves.

Boogaard (a scratch on Sunday) has been talking a little shit about it, but it hasn't generated much buzz. The Avs are not the Ducks. Lappy will fight anyone, but he's maybe 6' tall and if guys like Gaborik is willing to take him on....The other "tough" guy is Cody McLeod. He can fight...but he tends to, shall we say, choose his battles very carefully.

Hmm, too many people picking the Ducks to schlack the Stars. I know y'all are just trying to jinx them. No way this is an easy series, I don't care how the Stars finished the season. Way too many tested vets on that team to go quietly, and the Ducks haven't exactly been smooth sailing recently either, with their injuries and the Pronger suspension.

I'm as concerned about this series as I am upcoming possible series with Detroit or San Jose.

NHL Draft Lottery is in a few minutes. Projected first overall pick Steven Stamkos has 11 goals and no assists in 7 games so far with the OHL's Sarnia Sting in the playoffs. All other potential first overall picks are defensemen: Alex Pietrangelo, Drew Doughty and Zach Bogosian.

Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, Atlanta, St. Louis and New York (I) have a shot at the first overall pick.

My tested vets you mean tested in first and second round play? They've had a complete meltdown the last month and they've shown no real signs of breaking out of it. The offense isn't dynamic enough to score on Anaheim, and the D isn't strong enough to take the beating they'll get from the Ducks forwards. Turco may've played great last playoffs but he still has the stigma of the unclutch goalie and lastly Anaheim is reaching their stride, while Dallas hasn't even hit the worst of their slide.

No sarcasm, I don't have HD so I never paid attention, but a friend of mine (who does) is a massive Flyers fan so I may see if he'll be watching the games on the weekends. And they are showing games on Sat. and Sun. for the playoffs.

Montreal over Boston in 6
- Price may look slow early but should bounce back. Boston doesn't have enough fire power, and they have questions in net.

Pittsburgh over Ottawa in 5
- Ottawa has issues in net, and their Captain is out. The Pens will just flat outscore Ottawa, and worry about their defensive game in the second round.

- Washington over Philadelphia in 6
When a team is playing as great of hockey as Washington to make the playoffs, it translates over nicely into the chase for Lord Stanley's cup. Philly has no D, and though the Cap's D is also flakey, their offense has more punch then the Flyers.

Rangers over Devils in 7
- Seems like one of those series when something has to give. I don't like the Devils chances if they need to score 3 goals to win every game.

Detroit over Nashville in 6
- Nashville will play hard but when your #1 goaler is a 28 year old rookie, there is a problem there, no matter how good he's played.

Calgary over San Jose in 7
- Calgary is built for the playoffs. San Jose is a good team. and this should be the first rounds best series, but after the disappointment of last year, I expect Calgary to find a way to beat San Jose down and pull out a game 7 in the Tank.

Minnesota over Colorado in 6
- A popular pick is Colorado over Minnesota, but I don't see it with Colorado's goaltending situation. Plus this leads to my dream matchup ..

Anaheim over Dallas in 4
- Anaheim is playing their best, Dallas their worst. Wild vs Ducks, and Fight Night at the Xcel in the second round.

I generally agree with all this, but I still think Dallas has too much talent for us to sweep them or take four of five unless things just break our way. I suspect this will be a six or seven gamer. I believe we should win--we had the better record and we have home ice and we're the defending champs, with all that goes with that. But "should" doesn't win series, especially in fierce intradivisional playoff series--there is no love lost between Dallas and Anaheim, anymore than there will be if we play San Jose at some point. I think Dallas is still one very talented team, and if we rest on our laurels, we're going to get our asses handed to us.

Chief Rum

lol

So do people really think we're playing at our best? I know it's easy to look at 18-5-1 (or whatever) in the last 24 games and figure that team's playing pretty well, but as a night-to-night observer of the team, I have to tell you, this team is not really clicking on all cylinders. They're actually grinding right now. That could be affected by watching San Jose just blow away competition, but I think that's pretty on the mark.

We lost Perry a month and change more ago, and we desperately need him back (he's probably going to miss the first round). We haven't had that instant score ability we had last year (although we did gain some of it back with the return of the Flash). Bobby Ryan is still trying to get the hang of things, and Bertuzzi and Weight are showing some age. Scotty, as amazing as he is, has seen his points per game and plus/minus drop. Maybe he'll turn it on now, maybe not. The power play has been much worse this year overall than last year. And everyone knows the wildcard that is Pronger. He's scary good when he's out there. But he's always a risk to draw a suspension.

We have been gutting out wins, we do have uber-tested playoff vets and our penalty kill and goaltending (especially in the playoffs) is lights out.

But I'll tell you now, this is just not the same team as last year. If we're going to win it again, we're going to have to step it up at least a couple notches. I don't think the team we ended the season with beats the Wings or Sharks in a seven game series with four on the road. I am of the opinion that only the Wings and Sharks will ultimately beat us, but that could just be silly fan enthusiasm (no, probably).

Turco has to not suck in the playoffs some day. I'm very worried about the Stars as well. I don't think there is any way it goes less than 6. If Turco can resemble anything close to a starting NHL goalie, it's going to be a very low scoring series with Perry still out. And Steve Ott and Mike Ribero have absolutely owned the Ducks this year.

I'm bracing for the ripping from the Wings fans, but I would rather see them than Dallas or San Jose. I just think we match up better with a less physical team.

dola, i looked it up

in 7 games, turco allowed a whopping 11 goals. 5 of them came in game 1...but it went to quadruple overtime.

in the series, he had a save percentage of .952.

and oh yeah, all 3 wins were by shutout.

I wouldn't reccomend this if your team has to play many games against the Wings. He's 2-9-5 lifetime against the Wings with a .899 sv %. I don't think he's ever won at Joe Louis Arena.

I know he had struggled in the past in the playoffs, but I thought he sort of shook that off last year. He was amazing, unfortunately Luongo was just a little bit better.

No. No ripping. Anaheim and San Jose are the favorites in the West. I would rather face Detroit than either of those teams.

As for Dallas, I don't think they're really that much more physical than the Wings, especially if, due to some injuries up front, the Wings dress both Downey and McCarty.

Too soft. Too old. Too European. Too weak. No heart.

To listen to the National Hockey League's talking heads talk about the Detroit Red Wings, if the Wings don't set up a meeting with the Wizard of Oz and fast, their chances of capturing the Stanley Cup are non-existent.
Some of hockey's loudest voices --Don Cherry from Hockey Night In Canada's Coach's Corner, Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury from TSN and NBC and Mike Emrick of NBC, gathered Monday to offer their assessment of the impending National Hockey League playoffs, and much Detroit bashing was on the agenda.

Sadly, it was simply a case of perpetuating the same tired, old myths about the Wings, who open the playoffs Thursday against the Nashville Predators.

You'd think the most recognizable analysts in the game could see past the stereotype.

"Detroit is a team that won the Jennings Trophy, won the Presidents' Trophy, has a strong candidate for the Norris and the Hart Trophies (Nicklas Lidstrom), a coach who's been mentioned as coach of the year in (Mike) Babcock and two of the top six scorers in the league (Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg) and yet there seems to be questions about them," Milbury said.

"I think the reasons are two. The first is their goaltending. Is (Dominik) Hasek going to be able to perform at the level he has done in the past and drive them deep into the playoffs? If he can't, will (Chris) Osgood?

They've been just OK.

"The second one is character. Nashville has it by the bucket load. The Europeans have smashed a lot of stereotypes, but it still raises its ugly head when you talk about Detroit. Do they have enough character, or are they going to be stamped as the Euro skill players and can Nashville intimidate them?"

TESTY RESPONSE

It's the latter criticism that causes steam to rise from the ears of the Wings' brass.

"Didn't we answer those questions last year when we went to the conference final," growled Wings general manager Ken Holland regarding his club's supposed lack of toughness.

Cherry is also of the belief that Hasek, 43, is the weak link that will cause the Wings to break.

"Hasek doesn't seem as he's got that bounce," Cherry said. "He's stopping pucks, don't get me wrong. I think he's a good goaltender. But to me, he doesn't look as alive as he used to."

Babcock was perplexed by the criticism launched at his netminders.
"Didn't we just win the Jennings?" he asked, obviously aware of the answer. "Didn't we allow the fewest shots in the league. Chris Osgood led the league in goals against all season.

"What more do they want?"

Apparently, nothing less than a Stanley Cup celebration will silence Detroit's critics.

McGuire took the Wings' secondary scoring to task.

"If Detroit can't get consistent scoring from Datsyuk and Zetterberg, it puts a lot of pressure on Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen to produce," he said.

You mean the two guys who combined to net 47 goals this season, among 10 Wings who netted double digits?

The funny thing is, all of these experts are picking the San Jose Sharks to win it all. Those would be the same Sharks who folded up their tents at the first sign of adversity in their series with Detroit last spring. Now there's a team whose character rightfully deserves to be questioned.
For these hockey mavens to raise the same issue about the Wings merely shows that they haven't been paying attention.

San Jose was my preseason pick for the Finals (along with, get ready to laugh, Toronto) and I'll stick with them. In the East, I think it's kind of a crapshoot. When I had to make a pick for the Times blog I picked the Rangers. Then I switched to the Devils. And then switched back to NY. I don't really have a good reason why, but I guess I feel the eastern finalist will be the winner of that series.

Montreal over Boston in 6 - When's the last time these two have met in the playoffs and Montreal hasn't won?

Pittsburgh over Ottawa in 5 - Should be a high scoring series, Pens are playing good hockey right now, Sens aren't and are without the captain...not a good combo.

Washington over Philly in 5 - Both teams had to play at least decent hockey down the stretch to get in, but I like the skilled Caps to beat the tougher Flyers...the longer this series goes, however, the more of an edge I'd give to Philly.

Devils over Rangers in 7 - The Devils style of play + Brodeur's brilliance usually is a good combo for the playoffs

Detroit over Nashville in 6 - Detroit shouldn't have too much trouble but the Preds might play with new life knowing they're not playing the Sharks.

SJ over Calgary in 6 - Flames have a good style for the playoffs but they've been inconsistent this year and the Sharks are peaking at the right time.

Colorado over Minnesota in 5- Don't really know what to expect from this series, but my gut just tells me the Avs will win fairly easily.

Anaheim over Dallas in 6 - Should be a good series, but there's too many question marks that don't bode well for the Stars: Turco, poor play down the stretch, overcoming the Ducks mix of firepower and toughness (Ott, for example, will have to be a little less of a pussy if they want to match up in this category), etc.

Can't wait for tomorrow...Go Sharks!

When a team is playing as great of hockey as Washington to make the playoffs, it translates over nicely into the chase for Lord Stanley's cup. Philly has no D, and though the Cap's D is also flakey, their offense has more punch then the Flyers.

They may have no one in the league of Ovechkin but the Flyers have 7 players that scored 20 or more goals this year. That's some pretty good scoring depth. What I am hoping is that the Caps feasted on the weaker Southeast Division for almost a month now and people have a wrong impression of them. While the Flyers had to battle through the Atlantic and still made it out.

I'm not so sure if I like it. I really dug their old layout. This one seems too much like ESPN to me. Anyone know why they got rid of the scouting reports on the player cards? More the former than the latter. Hasek would have to get injured or play very, very poorly and Osgood play very well in relief for Babcock to make a switch.

I think the intention all along has been to keep Hasek fresh and healthy for the playoffs.

You know, I love Martin Brodeur, and the Devils don't win 3 Cups without him, but it seems like he makes one really boneheaded play every year that can or does cost the Devils a game. Score tied at 1, and he's watching a puck just sitting in his crease. A Rangers player (Ryan Callahan, I think) zips from behind the net and taps the puck in. Marty was staring at the puck in the crease. Ridiculous.

and, those who were mislead by pumpy's bad advice and stayed away from the Avs-Wild game, you missed a hell of a hockey game. The Avs went up 2-0. The Wild came back 2-2. The tying goal should have been a backbreaker for the Avs, but Quenneville calls a timeout, calms the team down, and then the Avs just go to town, pretty much controlling the game from then on out.

In the last 10 minutes or so in the 3rd, the Avs had two goals waved off (including one that probably was, indeed, a goal), a shot off the post, a shot off the crossbar and, with 2:27 left, an unsuccessful penalty shot. They finally won it in OT. Of course it would be the league's all-time playoff OT goal scorer, Joe Sakic. Great, great game.

So I can hardly comment authoritatively, as I didn't get to watch the whole game (stupid band nazis). It seemed, however, like the refs in the San Jose - Calgary game were INCREDIBLY quick to blow the whistle when the puck got into the Calgary crease, regardless of whether or not Kipper had control of the puck.

This is no excuse, and I'm not trying to whine, but it struck me as odd.

Two "little things" I saw from the Pens last night that I really liked:

- One the second goal (the 2-on-1), watch Malkin after the goal. I believe you learn a lot about a team from the way they celebrate goals. If they jump around or look like they're shocked it went it, that's a bad sign. Malkin doesn't even react at all. He just takes his mouth guard out and glides over pat Sykora on the head. Not even a smile. This kid is ready to play.

- Late in the game, Wade Redden and Sidney Crosby get into a purse-swinging* incident. Not a big deal, but Whitney skates in from the blue line and just pummels Redden. In the dying seconds Gary Roberts basically drops his gloves and challenges any Senator to come get him. Chris Neil is on the ice but barely makes eye contact. The old Senators may be back.

I loved that Pens/Sens game for the reasons ML states above. The Pens just look ready to play. Crosby didn't put up points, but as the announcers stated he did the little things (and I think he did more offensively than the announcers gave him credit for).

Malkin looks amazing. I haven't watched him play much since he entered the NHL, but good grief he was a force last night. His goal was awesome, and his reaction after was great in a different way than the one ML wrote about. As he's skating behind the net, one of the Sens gives him a shot. He starts to turn to react, then just gets this look of "whatever, that chumps not worth my time" and resumes his fist pump.

I also have to say that while I don't normally like Don Cherry, he was exactly right in calling out Chris Neil for his actions during the Crosby-Redden purse fight, as ML so elegantly put it. I couldn't believe that the teams big enforcer would just stand there chatting with Crosby while Redden got pounded on. Just bizarre. I saw several other incidents too where the Sens players just don't seem to stand up for each other. Weak looking team.

In name only. It's like when you're playing NHL 95 and you put your best players on the "4th line" so that the AI will match up with them.

Little known fact: The NHL has a "maximum awesomeness" limit on any one line, which is why the Penguins have to play crappy guys like Georges Laraque on the Roberts line.

Colorado totally dominated after Minnesota's 2nd goal. They really played well and looked dangerous. Theodore was solid. Colorado has the potential to be a very scary team if they can stay healthy.

The Senators are done. They looked horrible. Chris Neil was a joke. Later in the game when Roberts was challenging everyone, Laraque was out there as well as Neil and Neil never made eye contact. Just gutless.

That is total bullshit. The whole point of being on Versus was that the NHL was supposed to be king. Versus would promote the NHL, have the post game shows, etc, etc, etc. Now they do this? The NHL playoffs are when this sport really excels above all others, just blows them away, and they are getting bumped for first day Masters highlights? COME ON!

Gary Roberts was amazing in those final seconds last night. I wasn't pleased with his hit that almost put Bass face-first into the boards, but he was ready to take on the whole Ottawa team. My goodness, I couldn't believe it. The officials tried to get him off the ice, and he wouldn't go. Absolutely amazing.

I didn't even notice that Chris Neil was out there for the Whitney-Redden incident or the Gary Roberts blowup at the end. Jeez, I almost feel bad for the psyches of the Senators, as they probably expect to get the living shit beat out of them for the next 3 games. I know Gary Roberts is tough as all get-out, but when an 41-year-old man coming off a broken leg is kicking an entire line's collective ass, there are serious issues.

This has the potential to get as silly as that Buffalo-Ottawa brawl from last year (?) when Lindy Ruff put his tough guys out there against Ottawa's #1 line. Also, Detroit and Nashville had an exciting up and down game tonight. Detroit catches a break on a bounce off the ref that was probably offsides but that happens in the Playoffs. I fully expect McCarty and Tootoo to drop the gloves before all is said and done as they came close a few times tonight. Lot of chirping, lot of high hits. All the makings of a dandy game two.

I'm amazed at how awful Anaheim looks. It's only one game though, but this is pretty remarkable.

You know, I want to say I am, too. But I really am not. We have been extremely inconsistent, and it has been more than the injuries and late veteran additions. This team just hasn't had the same vibe as last year. The power play is extremely inconsistent, and the forecheck hasn't been as strong. We have had issues taking not only bad penalties, but taking tons of them. Pronger has been a bit too "loose" this year, and Niedermayer is still not really close to the top of his game (hasn't been since his return). And we're depending on too many younger players or third line types to support our inconsistent scoring. The only guys who seem to be the exact same as last year are Selanne and Jiggy (and even Jiggy is having an off night tonight).

Really, the whole "feel" of this team has been one of unsteadiness all year. I have never been comfortable with how the team has been playing, from the very first drop of the puck in September, and that continued even during the strong second half play. The feeling last year I had that we can always come back or win that next critical game is just not there this year.

Marty sure moved a *lot* on what looked like a very small tap from Colin White. The Ranger fan in me thinks he figured it was a Ranger bumping him so he tried to sell it. Oops.

Also, he was insanely out of position on Avery's shot. While it was perfectly placed in the top corner, half the net was wide open.

he may have tried to kick it, but after seeing a few different angles it looks like the puck missed his foot entirely and went off of Salei's toe instead. Tough break for the Avs - the Wild have 5 goals, and two of them have been fluky deflections off an Avalanche skate in front.

once again, if you aren't watching, you're missing great hockey. This game was tied 1-1 late in the 3rd, but Mikko Koivu (who has KILLED the Avs his whole career) fires a 60' curveball that fools Jose Theodore to make it 2-1. The Avs pull their goalie and shortly thereafter Kim Johnsson hooks Ryan Smyth in front of the net to give the Avs a 6 on 4 PP. The Wild were crazy about the call, but it was a good one - Johnsson definitely hooked him, and Smyth probably would have scored if he hadn't. The Avs convert on the PP with 43 seconds left to send it into OT. where, of course, Keith Carney wins it.

Carney, as you know, is a sniper. He started slowly this year, with just zero goals in his first 60 games. But he scored one against the Avs in the final game of the season and now has 2 goals in his last 3 games, both against Colorado. We're going to need to make note of him every time he steps...er, lumbers on to the ice.

Penguins have a slight scare. After going up 3-0 and putting it into cruise, Ottawa ties it at 3-3. All 3 Ottawa goals are scored from a combine 6 feet from the crease.

But Marty Lapointe takes a STUPID high sticking penalty with about 1:20 left. Ryan Malone scores on the PP with a minute left, and adds the empty netter, Pens 5-3. If that was Ottawa's big push, this series is over.

Crosby 4 assists, but still relatively invisible. Malkin with 3 assists, Sykora 2 goals, Malone 2 goals (GWG and empty netter).

Randy Robitaille is the Sens leading scoring in the series to this point.

It was so terrible the penalty taken-- he was honestly trying to lift Ruutu's stick at center ice, pretty routine play-- but the timing was horrendous. I guess it's easy to say from here, but three other guys back, you let Ruutu dump that puck in. Period.

Yep...rather they use the $8M it would take to keep Hossa, and put that towards keeping Malone, Dupuis and bringing in a mid-tier guy (ala Sykora). Then wrap up Malkin long term. And Fleury is a RFA. Toss in the $5M off the books with Roberts and Recchi's deals, and Orpik and Eaton becoming UFAs. One of those two could be back, but they'll have a little money to throw around at a d-man.
But retaining Hossa means lots of choices need to be made elsewhere.

As for the two controversial calls in the Wings/Preds series.

I don't have too much of a problem with the Game 1 call where the linesman got hit with the puck and caused it to stay "in" the zone. It was very close, the linesman got hit and couldn't be in a position to make it. I am fine with it.

I do, however, think the Preds were jobbed in Game 2. That first "non goal" was definitely a goal. I didn't hear the whistle before it went in and the net was clearly still on its morings. It was a much easier call than Yelle's similar goal in the Sharks/Flames series, which was considered a goal.

As for Holmstrom's goalie intereference. It was close. Goals have been waived off for less, but he's also scored goals while doing more. It's a total judgment call. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the next "judgment" call went against Detroit.

Can't believe the Stars are up 2-0 over the defending champs. The good news is the Stars overcame a Ducks rally to win 5-2 last night. They have been a glass team when losing a lead this year...nice to see them able to withstand the pressure and finish the job.

But in the back of my mind, I know that the Duck now come in and win the next 2, then take one at home, lose back in Dallas, and finally win convincingly on home ice.

At least we will give them a scare, though. :)

Don't think that is going to happen. The Ducks are cooked, so to speak. If we give up three goals a game, we don't have the offense to win. Maybe a healthy Perry would make a difference, but I doubt it.

I would like to see Hiller get the start in Dallas for game 3, although that might be seen as a complete white flag he's actually got huge potential and Giggy just isn't getting the job done right now. It just might be the thing that changes the series. God knows the veterans are doing a piss poor job...

Unless the Ducks do a complete 180, I'd be amazed to see this series go longer than five, and I'd probably put money on 4-0.

That's what the fans want to see, stupid. Next year, midget goalies with no padding, goals twice as big and teams will alternate 5-on-3 powerplays throughout the game. Fans don't want to see a real sport. They just like it when that little red light goes on behind the goal. If that happens seventy bazillion times a game, we will have all the fans in the world in no time.

I don't like New Jersey's chances going into overtime here. It's just because they've had trouble getting shots on goal for much of the night. They're getting the puck into the offensive zone, but they aren't getting to the net. Here's the deal: When the Devils get the puck, I don't expect them to do anything with it. When the Rangers get the puck, I hold my breath and expect the skilled New York players to score. That's not a good position to be in as a Devils fan with overtime coming up.

Here's hoping for a lucky break or something. Maybe Brylin needs to score another goal, or maybe somebody like Rupp or Zajac needs to get involved on the offensive end. Why not? The other Devils sure aren't doing much.

As for the Avery thing, it's perfectly legal but I can't believe the Devils just let him stand there for 20 seconds and get away with it. If I was the Devils coach, I would have one of my defensemen drill him in the ear as soon as the puck gets anywhere near the net. Hell, it's one of the few times you will have a clean shot at the little punk.

It was a 5 on 3 at the time, which is (I'm assuming) why he did it...bringing one man exclusively to Avery would've given us an even better shot at a goal. And the puck didn't get anywhere near the net until he scored.

I hope Wilson's comments after the game about 'drawing blood should mean some kind of penalty' were merely about defending Marleau because that hit was clean. I can't see how he could ever have a problem with it if one of his players executed a check that solid and caused an opponent to get a nosebleed.

He made that comment? Wow. That was as clean a hit as there was. Marleau had the puck, his head was done, and Sarich just came in and leveled him. He didn't raise his shoulders, lift an elbow, leave his feet or anything. That's hockey, Mr. Wilson.

Did anyone catch the clip on CBC they showed of Sarich making a similar hit in juniors. That was even better. An open ice hit, very similar, but the other guy was moving forward and did a complete flip, head over heels, in the air before landing on the ice.

Both Ron McLean and Kelly Hrudey said that the ref should have called an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. The ref warned Avery, Avery kept it up, and that moment Avery should have been given a 10 minute misconduct. No powerplay, just sit down for 10 minutes. Sorry, but not at all. I don't see a difference between what Avery did facing the goalie and what every other guy does with his back to the goalie. So he used his hands to distract Brodeur in addition to his head or body -- big fuckin deal.

So if Avery stood on the side of the crease...got down on all fours...and barked like a dog to distract the goalie you'd be fine with that? It is well within the rules.

It's not very classy. Didn't we have some kind of discussion like this when Sean Taylor spit on a player?

I wouldn't call a penalty on it, which is what we're discussing.

Is it "classy?" No. Do I give a shit as long as it helps my team win? No. What's funny is when I read other posts (not here) that say (direct quote), "I wish someone would crack him in the skull from behind. He is a coward, and needs to be taken out like one." Yes, that should be the punishment for someone who isn't classy. Todd Bertuzzi agrees.

And for the record, I don't think Brodeur retaliating by forcefully shoving a stick into the genitals of another man is very classy either, and that's not within the rules.

Note that Brodeur didn't give him an ounce of attention when he camped out in front of the net on the second rush down the ice, maybe because he was expecting him to be an unclassy prick and start screening him again. So he put the puck in the net.

If Avery spat on Brodeur, he deserves the shot to the balls.

What Avery did was well within the rights of the rules. There is nothing black and white that says what he did was wrong and I understand Logan, why you are defending him. But as a hockey fan, I don't want to see this happening in every game. That's just what it comes down to.

BTW i am surprised Marty didnt get a penalty for his glove to Avery's face.

NHL Rules.

Rule 41(g) "A misconduct penalty shall be imposed on any player who persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty."

I think that rule could cover what Avery was up to with the whole stick and glove to the face. Then again, that rule is very broadly worded. There's probably a dozen things a shift Avery (and others) "persists" on doing "to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty".

In my opinion, Avery doing that stuff one time was funny. It was effective, too. My concern would be if the league shrugged and said "Well, it's not against the rules, so we won't take steps to stop it." What that does is open the door for players all over to stand in front of a goalie and wave their sticks around, which would probably lead to people accidentally taking sticks to the face. I consider Avery lucky that he didn't accidentally hit somebody. It was a smart play at the time, but if you allow him to do it, then you allow everyone to do it, and I think it's a good idea for them to get players to keep their sticks down.

While I can see that you don't want to outlaw a whole bunch of things because someone might get hurt, this is a stick that's up at face level. It's unnecessarily dangerous. With regards to the object of the game (put the puck in the net), there's no reason for it. It's not like you can play the puck with your stick at that level anyway, so the stick shouldn't be there. I like that Avery was not penalized for it at the time, but I can agree that it shouldn't be allowed again.

New Rule to take effect...

INTERPRETATION OF RULE 75 – UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT

NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 14, 2008) -- National Hockey League Senior
Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell
today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 -
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule
75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation
when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender
and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the
goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or
distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make
a play."

They should've given that fag a misconduct penalty for his gay celebration. I don't wish injury upon him, but if Brodeur should happen to think there's a shot, go for a glove or blocker save, and accidentally level Avery, that should be fine. In addition, Avery had his stick up high, his hands in the face of the goaltender.

What a faggoty move.

Hours after Thoresen was told he might require surgery to remove a ruptured testicle, after blocking a slap shot by Capitals defenseman Mike Green, an MRI taken at Washington Hospital Center revealed no rupture. Thoresen was discharged Saturday morning.

When Holmgren told reporters Friday night that Thoresen might face surgery, few expected the 20-year-old winger and father of two to play in the remainder of the playoffs. In fact, many wondered if he would be able to have children again.

Perhaps that's why his teammates were stunned when told there was a possibility of him suiting up again in this series.

"Wow!" Timonen said. "I didn't know that. I'm surprised if he can play. It's good to see he's going to be all right, and hopefully he can keep his testicle."

I think it's important for the NHL to put an end to Avery's back-to-the-play antics. Had he taken a point shot to the exposed area of the spine and being paralyzed this wouldn't be very funny. What is really sad is all the young players out there that watch that and then go immitate it. Good job Colin Campbell.

What I thought was even funnier than Avery's schtick was John Madden's comment about how they're trying to sell the game & Avery is out there doing stuff like that. Newflash for Mr. Madden, Avery was quite likely the most interesting & entertaining single thing that happened in the NHL all weekend. And, given the frequent complaints (although it's never bothered me personally) about the neutral zone trap & the Devils connection to it, I find Madden's concern pretty funny.

Watching it that way, it might just be one of the most amusing sequences I can recall ever seeing in sports.

AFAIC, Avery was smart enough to figure it out ahead of time & wait for the right time to use it. Brodeur meanwhile needs to have a loooong talk with the candyasses masquerading as a PK unit in front of him. Not one but two guys camped in front of the net long enough to build a campfire (on the first trip down), never mind the antics.

Just to be clear, the NHL didn't change the rule or create a new one. They clarified the existing rule.

Basically they had to say "This was always a penalty, but since it never occured to us that anybody could be this much of a dink, the referee didn't know whether the rule actually applied. So we're making sure everyone knows that it does."

JonInMiddleGA
04-14-2008, 07:23 PM
um, the rangers play the trap too.

Even if every team in the league plays it, considering the knock it gets, for someone playing for the original/prime offender to say "Here we are trying to sell the game, and stuff like that is going on,, it's just laughable to me. Granted, I would find that to be pretty comical regardless of what team the speaker played for, it just added another level to the comedy.
(again, FTR, the trap never bothered me particularly but I sure seem to be the minority about that)

Watch the replay again. At about the :10 mark of the video, two guys are camped without so much as a glance in their direction. 5-3 or not, that sure seems problematic.
