View Full Version : Shouldn't monitors be shaped like a piece of paper?

So I'm reading a bunch of pdf files lately, all with two columns. It's annoying to have to scroll down, then back up again when the second column starts. As a result, I've zoomed way out, so that a whole page at a time fits on my screen. But when I do this, I've noticed that the document itself takes up less than a third of the screen -- the rest of it is background. I feel like this wouldn't be a problem, if my monitor were just shaped proportional to an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. I figure this probably wouldn't thrill the movie-watching crowd, but it seems to make more sense for word processing, doesn't it?

have you tried a monitor that you can view vertically?

You mean, turning my head?

No -- the only monitors I've used in the last five years have been laptops, or whatever they give me at work.

using a monitor that you can turn 90 degrees so it's taller than it is wide.

My wife is an accountant. They have a Document Management System (DMS) that stores all of their clients' paper work (As PDFs). They each have 2 monitors; one is turned veritcally for paperwork and one horizontally for typical computer work.
