So I've spent a lot of time on this website today. It has some really, really good stuff on here. First of all, you can find out who contributed by name, employer, or zip code to any presidential candidate or House candidate (haven't figured out how to search for Senators yet). It's interesting to see who in my zip code has contributed to the presidential race (no one).
The second piece to this is looking up Sylvestre Reyes and seeing what the hell he's been spending money on. He raised $630,886 since January and has spent $428,885...almost $61,000 re-imbursing himself. He spent $1,160 on season tickets to UTEP games. He spent $650 twice on gifts to Steny Hoyer, a rep from MD who has raised $2.4 million since January...he really needs some gifts. Reyes has also spent $10,000 on cell phone bills. The details on the Reps are pretty good, such as $99 on a meal at Red Lobster in El Paso or $30 on gas at the Circle K.
What's really disgusting is how many people outside of El Paso contribute to this fucker and how much he spends on companies outside of El Paso. He's run unopposed so all of his campaign money can go directly to him (yeah, yeah, yeah, he's got to pay for some advertising costs).
If I had my way, I'd make it a law that politicians cannot accept money from anyone outside their voting district. It wouldn't stop corruption, but it would make it a little harder. I'd also enforce the ethics laws that are out there. This is ridiculous.
