Anyone got some recommendations on history books dealing with the Western frontier - from the early 19th century onwards? Preferably books that don't require much prior knowledge on the subject.

Are you familiar with The Frontier in American History by Frederick Jackson Turner? One of the true classics on the subject (it was written over 100 years ago), it may not be exactly what you're looking for but it's definitely worthwhile.

turner's book is...seminal

absolutely critical reading

the book I was thinking of that I have goes back beyond that - "The Course of Empire" by Bernard DeVoto.

got it back in college as a book award from a prof. and to be honest, never even cracked it yet.

Anything by Allan Eckert.

I'll second this. Allan Eckert is a fantastic historical writer. Give "The Frontiersman" a try. It is an excellent book.

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas by Mari Sandoz provides fascinating insights into one of the great leaders of the losing side of the Indian Wars.

And when you're done with that, check out the album "Initiation" by the band, Course of Empire.

If you can find some books detailing the history of the Maxwell Land Grant, the story makes for fascinating reading.

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose is also worth a read.
