I would say the head-on collision would turn me off of the Miata more than the "chick car" factor. But apparently I'm already driving a lesbian car. Who knew.

Being a valet manager for a longtime, I can assure you that Miata's are chick cars. That being said they are really, really, fun to drive because you can whip them around pretty quick. If this is your only car you will now be driving a small 2 seater with no room or trunk space, although the newer ones are much better.

The Miata is one of the most misunderstood cars that there is out there.

It is a true sports car that’s very lightweight has incredible handling characteristics and plenty of power once you get the revs up.

It’s anything but a chicks car in my book. It’s not all that comfortable, it’s noisy and the ride is pretty harsh. In fact my wife comments are, how can such a small car make so much noise and not really go anywhere? She hates to drive it.

I never understood the whole girly, gay thing associated with the Miata.

I love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

But be prepared to take a few stabs from your buddy’s. You’ll get the gay, girly car stuff, but It’s never really bothered me one bit.

The Miata is a great car. It will probably be among the more fun/drive-able cars you will find at that price range. It offers good value for the money compared to most of the other convertible roadsters in the market. They are also very reliable.

A couple of things to consider though:
- If you are tall and/or have a big frame, you may not fit comfortably (though I hear that the new model is better at this)
- It's light weight and rear-wheel drive makes it very difficult to drive in icy conditions (but because of it's neutral handling, it is much easier to drive out of potential spin outs)
- Storage capacity is limited (but not impossibly so). Unless you pack light, long trips with another person may not be practical.

I always considered a Miata more of a middle-aged man's car then a gay man's car. Always seems like the 40+ guy who is single, slightly overweight, balding.....

Although when I was at the mostly gay/lesbian club a couple weeks ago with the wife and her cousin (a gay guy) I was pretty sure who was gay then. And I never saw a Miata in the parking lot.

Well, hopefully you won't have another one of those for a long time. I went through a six month period a couple of years ago where my daughter killed both my car and my wife's minivan. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

As far as the gaydar goes... if they're wearing assless chaps and making a hand-jerking gesture at you... they're making a pass. Either that or you've stumbled into the Pumpy Tudors family reunion.

I've always wanted a sporty convertible, but for various reasons have always had something else. I considered the BMW z3, and also an old Alpha Romeo I found on craigslist, but decided in the end the Miata was the best value.

Initial thoughts:

This is probably the fastest car I've ever owned (runner up would be an Acura Legend I had in the 90s). It handles like a dream, and is unbelievably fun to drive, with one exception: Driving in traffic is a bit of a drag, but that's true of any car with a standard transmission. Its not as noisy on the highway as I thought it would be. The seats are very comfortable, although they probably wouldn't be for a very large person.

Overall, I'm incredibly pleased.
