You and your new friend are taking a long drive to get to a concert to see a high-prestige band, like Led Zeppelin. You like this new friend, and want to impress them with your musical taste. Your new friend has strong feelings about music, and has confided that he looks down on or up to people based on their musical taste. The developing friendship may well hang in the balance. Your iPod is playing songs on random. What song are you most afraid will get played?

This is probably more fun if you pick a song that is actually on your iPod right now.
Sorry for the "femininity" of the question. Basically, you have a new friend who is cool but a music snob, and you want them to think you're cool.

Tough call. I have Starship "We Built This City" in there, but I am going with Frank Stallone's "Far From Over". I think it's from Flashdance, which, technically, I never saw. Must have seen the video on MTV back in the day. :)

If I'm driving with someone that is snobbish like that about their musical tastes I usually just put a brick on the gas and point towards a wall, then bail out.
Or I just piss directly on them. Or play some Bartok. Any of the above.
As for what I would be afraid would come up, oh, I guess I'd be disappointed if something the jerk liked came up. That would probably be the only thing I'd be concerned about.
Also eff musical elitists.

I wouldn't want to be friends with a person like this so the whole question loses it's meaning. The only time I'd be embarrassed by my music is if hardcore rap came on with "mixed company" present.

This response intrigues me because I view MJ4H as a musical elitist.
Not at all. I am very much of the opinion that the music one likes is very personal. I like a lot of different kinds of music, myself and would never look down on someone or what they like. I do encourage my students who have a narrow range of tastes to expose themselves to more types of music and give it a fair chance, but I certainly don't look down on them for liking what they like (not giving music a shot at all might get a word or two from me).

FWIW - that opinion is purely formed from the American Idol threads and the pumping up of Doolittle and Archuletta and the dislike of the more "mainstream" performers.

Well, I took it as snobbishness towards "perfect singing" vs. "entertaining singing".

I wouldn't be afraid of anything on my MP3 player; in fact, I would use it as a test. I'd like for some metal song to come on, and the blast beats would be going and the vocalist is croaking over the music, and the guy would be like, "What the fuck is THIS?" And I'd yell, "OH, THAT'S JUST 'PAPYRUS CONTAINING THE SPELL TO PRESERVE ITS POSSESSOR AGAINST ATTACKS' BY NILE!"

From a standpoint of a musical 'snob', I'd probably say
Weird Al - Amish Paradise
Bloodhound Gang - I wish I was Queer so I could get Chicks
Adam Sandler - Ode to my Car
From a friend standpoint (and them giving you that look of, really? you have that on your Ipod?)
Probably anything in the Alanis Morissette or Sarah McLachlan folders....

I bet I win this question. I put all sorts of crap on my ipod, often when I'm drunk.
Shitty and/or loser-ish stuff I have on my ipod:
- bad hair metal by bands like LA Guns (as opposed to a huge amount of good hair metal)
- pretty much any PG-rated rap song that was popular in 1991
- one song each from Mitsou, Roch Voisine, Sophie B Hawkins, and Robbie Williams
- four songs from Les Miserables*
- about a half dozen remixes that fans have done for theme songs to old computer games. The "Gods Intro DaxxTRS Remix" is my favorite
- three or four pro wrestling theme songs (plus another three songs that I only know through pro wrestling video montages)
And that's not even counting all my daughter's kid's music and various novelty comedy songs
*Dear me: you are gay.

No, I was mostly just arguing about who was the better singer. I would never ever criticize someone's musical tastes. I might criticize their ability to critique music on a technical level, however.
Seriously, I have everything from AJ & Aly to Wham! on my ipod. You think I would even have a leg to stand on if I tried to criticize someone's taste?!

As completely random as this is, I have the soundtrack to Final Fantasy VII and the soundtrack to Eternal Sonata on my iPod (actually, on both iPods). It's always sort of difficult to explain to my friends that I do in fact have video game music on my iPod, especially something like FFVII...

I would estimate I have about 10gb of video game music on my ipod.

Honestly, there is so much stuff on my ipod that I'd be terrified of my friends hearing that I can't pick just one song or band.
I hit "shuffle" just now and got the song "Uno Zoo Di Vetro" by the 70s Italian prog rock group Semiramis, which serves as a great example of what I'm talking about...

I would say the only semi-questional music compared to the rest of what I listen to that I have ever paid for would be Matthew Sweet. But a music snob can't rip that guy, he is one hell of a musician who plays a lot of the instruments on his albums and of course sings.

You know, I agree with this wholeheartedly. If it's on my iPod and I don't like it, I remove it (I'm actually going through a process of ensuring that every song on my iPod gets played at least once).
That said, when Final Fantasy VII music comes up, it's still a pain in the arse to explain what it is, etc. Not embarassing, but not "convenient."
