I have been fighting allergies/head cold since Wednesday, nothing settled in my sinuses or chest yet, so I don't think it's anything more serious (like a sinus infection or upper respiratory infection), however in the past 24 hours I have completely lost my voice. It started going yesterday afternoon and by the time I woke up this morning, it was totally gone. My throat doesn't hurt but I do feel a "strain" when I talk. I've been sipping hot tea all day, popping cough drops, and continuing to use the Zicam and Ibuprofen to fight the cold/allergy symptoms. Does anyone know of other good ways to treat losing one's voice? I don't know if I've ever had laryngitis before, is there more to it than just losing your voice?

I had the same exact thing about 4 months ago. I went to see my doc and he said the best thing is rest and doing exactly what you're doing. I talk a LOT @ my current job, so I was able to get a full week off.

Yeah, I am praying this is gone by Monday - I work from home doing Customer Service, 100% on the phones. If I don't work I don't get paid...

Having needed my voice to make a living for a number of years (the whole radio thing), I was pretty worried any time I noticed a voice problem.
Best thing I ever found for it is was much rest as possible.
Beyond that, the various home remedies different people recommended were wide & varied, as were the results from one person to the next. For me, hot liquids were probably the most effective, coffee/tea/whatever. Other people swore by concoctions that involved either honey, lemon, or bourbon. I knew at least a couple of other people who were very partial to Fisherman's Friend's drops.

I giggled at this :)
Shockingly, I have some voice back this morning. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than it was yesterday - though I do still feel some strain in my vocal cords. I am going to try to not talk too much today and hope that I'm ok for work tomorrow...and of course, have more hot tea, which I'm getting very tired of.
