Two teens arrested after US sailors bashed and robbed

POLICE have arrested two of four teenagers who allegedly attacked and robbed three visiting American sailors in the Perth CBD last night.
About 7.30pm the sailors, who were on shore leave from the USS Tarawa, were surrounded by the four alleged offenders on the upper level of the Murray St Mall.

The offenders demanded money from the sailors then, in an unprovoked attack, punched and kicked them before stealing a wallet and cigarettes.

All three victims sustained swelling and bruising as a result of the incident but were not seriously injured.

The attack was captured on closed-circuit security TV, and Police Rail Unit Officers with
assistance from Public Transport Authority staff attended the Cannington Train Station at 11pm and arrested two teenage boys.

The pair, aged 13 and 14, were charged with aggravated robbery and assault.
They were refused bail and will appear in the Perth Children’s Court today.
Police are making further enquiries as to the identities of the two co-offenders.

OK, assuming the other 2 people involved were also aged around 13 and 14, you mean to tell me that three Navy sailors couldn't handle four 13 & 14 year olds?

Maybe they are big for their age?

Crap. I think my cousin is on the Tarawa. I'll have to email him and see for sure.

I would assume the sailors were unarmed, and had reasonable cause to believe the robbers could have weapons. Would either of the following two headlines been preferable?

"US sailor fatally stabbed in attempted robbery"
"US sailors charged with battery of child after alleged robbery attempt"

Depends. Were the sailors sober?

Good point. I mean, they were in Perth, and that's not an experience I recommend without a good deal of alcohol. Spirits, preferably.

You're right, neither would have been nearly as funny.

*Edit: Not that the actual headline of the real article is very funny... It was more the details of the attackers that I found a little, well, surprising.

Yup, my cousin is on the Tarawa. I can't wait to hear this story when he gets back.

The problem could have been also if the sailors beat up the kids and the the kids report the sailors for hitting some poor 13 years old kids.
