After picking up my daughter last night from the in-laws, I stopped at the local Best Buy and picked up MOO3. I was going to wait to buy MOO3, but Galactic Civilizations is still too many days away and Starships Unlimited (purchased a few weeks ago) has proven to be a bust. I installed it this morning, played it for about 2 hours, and have a few first impressions:

1) I love the interface. I have read many complaints about it, but I like it. I am having a little bit of a blurry-font problem, but that is all and is probably an XP issue.
2) The graphics are perfect. They are basic, and that is all I need. I've read a lot of knocks against the graphics, but if you want graphics for a space-game, play Freelancer.
3) The galaxay map is nice. It is 3D-rotatable and you can zoom in and out with the scroll-wheel.
4) The game needs a tutorial. For 2 hours I have been reading and closing a lot of little "Master" boxes, but they in no way help one accomplish anything.
5) There is a lot to this game, however, as you may have heard, your viceroy takes care of everything. While this may be good at first, I personally like to dig in and take over, at least the things that interest me. The viceroys seems to ignore the player.

If they can add a tutorial and make it so that my decisions are used by the viceroys, I think this game will be all that we had hoped it would.

If you are looking simply to jump right in and enjoy playing a 4x space game, you aren't going to find it here as the learning curve looks pretty steep. I do, however, think that the core is in place and is only a few patches away from being the best 4x game to date. Let's hope Quicksilver doesn't let us down.

Quicksilver recently announced, after weeks of near silence, that they are in fact working on a patch. Read all about it here. (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=277756) In the meantime, a bunch of folks have been working on mods to fix some of the problems. Promising.

I haven't yet bought the game, and am planning to wait until the first patch is out to do so. I really want to get this game, so I hope they fix some of these problems (the manual/tutorial/user feedback issue, especially).
