Soldier calls parents during gun fight

A SOLDIER'S parents listened in horror after he accidentally called them during a fierce gun battle and left a message that ended abruptly with a voice shouting "Incoming!".

Stephen Phillips, 22, and other US soldiers were battling insurgents in Afghanistan when his phone was pressed against his Humvee and redialed the number of his parents in the small town of Otis, Oregon.

Mr Phillip's mother Sandie Petee and her husband, Jeff Petee came home later to find the chilling three-minute message on their answering machine, Oregon's KP-TV (http://www.kptv.com/news/16161182/detail.html) reported.

"His friend died a year ago in Iraq and I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, this may be the last time I hear my son's voice on the phone,'" Mrs Petee told KP-TV.

The television station also spoke to Phillip's brother John Petee who posted the voice mail on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4goOzg0lass)

Because my name starts with A I often get calls from folks who didn't lock the keypad on their mobiles, but I can honestly say I've never had a call like this one...

Would be a scary thing to listen to if you were the parents.

Not to make light of the situation, but I plan on using this with my parents as a "it could've been worse" for the time I accidentally called them insanely drunk when I was younger and I thought I was talking to a friend.

Honestly, I never would've guessed that these guys brought their cell phones with them into battle.

Yeah I would think that would be a big no-no. The enemy has to have equipment to detect the location of soldiers by their cell phone signals.

That was the first thought to enter my mind, too.

I would yell at him for calling during a firefight.

#1: His buddies depend on him and he's letting him down.
#2: If his focus is on calling mommy and daddy, he deserved to be killed.

Call later, but expend all your resources fighting.

"I'm not sure I agree with you a hundred percent on your police work, there, Lou."
