There's been an outbreak of a very contagious, very antibiotic resistant strain of pneumonia in Asia, and it has started to spread to Europe. Eight people have died from it so far, and there are more than 150 confirmed cases...

Scary stuff. Here's the link (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=514&ncid=514&e=7&u=/ap/20030315/ap_on_he_me/asia_pneumonia_6).

Hmmm, here's the CNN story (http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/03/15/WHO.alert/index.html). Apparently it's spread to Canada now, and officially has a name (SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)...

I think Cam was referring to The Stand, by Stephen King, although King may have borrow the term. The Boulder/Vegas mention is definitly The Stand.

Yup, 'Captain Trips' was the slang for the super flu that killed off the world in 'The Stand'.

A good Stevie King book, btw, though I don't like all of his. Definately read the unabridged version. It's like 1,300 pages or some nonsense, but it really delves the characters well.

This bug really has a potential to kill lots sooner or later just like The Great Influenza epidemic did early last century .

The funny thing is that I found that article on a Stephen King message board on a thread titled "Captain Trips"...

What's really scary is that they can't even figure out what causes it yet. They have no clue if it is a virus or a bacteria. They have little hope of containing it until they at least figure out the underlying cause.

If it were me, I'd call off any Hong Kong underage prostitute vacations I had been planning.
