I’m With Stupid #157 – Game Show edition
I’ll say it right up front. I take some pride in my IWS question selections, but I regret not thinking of a **great** one for this set until after I had posted my set. Naturally, I blame those who simply wouldn’t stand for the proper fermenting of the IWS development process – but for them, we would have had a battle of game show catchphrases, and could have weighed “I’d like to buy a vowel” versus “come on down” versus “no whammies!” versus “is that your final answer” versus “survey said.” My regrets – it would have been the best question in this set, and could have replaced the obvious eliminator #5.
Anyway…
1. You want to demonstrate what we mean by "game show" to someone who knows nothing at all of American culture. You may show one episode of one show. What show do you select?
33 The Price is Right
7 Jeopardy!
4 Wheel of Fortune
Deal Or No Deal
Solid start here – with one pretty clear winner.
2. Name someone who is best known as a game show host.
26 Bob Barker
17 Alex Trebek
Pat Sajak
Chuck Woolery
Not sure if the split there is a generational split, or a daytime/nighttime split. And candidly, there were more people than you might guess who had an odd pairing for questions #1 and #2… I have trouble seeing how you come up with TPIR for #1 but then pick another host for this question right afterwards. **shurg**
3. Name someone who is not known as a game show host, but who you think will be hosting a game show ten years from now.
8 Ryan Seacrest
5 Dan Patrick
3 Drew Carey
2 Jay Leno
2 Kathy Griffin
2 Jimmy Kimmel
2 Rosie O’Donnell
2 Oprah Winfrey
Alan Thicke
Adam Sandler
Jason Alexander
Pumpy Tudors
Tim Allen
David Spade
Dane Cook
Carson Daly
Drew Lachey
Stephen Colbert
Sarah Silverman
Conan O'Brien
Norm McDOnald
Ashton Kutcher
Ray Romano
Jeff Foxworthy
Paris Hilton
Tiki Barber
Jerry Seinfeld
Hats off to FOFC for a solid range of answers to this tough question – even many of the solo responses were pretty solid, I thought. I hadn’t even thought of Dan Patrick (I thought Seacrest was the “right” answer here) but after posting realized that I may have left the door open to Drew Carey, and was worried that might be the unintended winner.
4. What game show, past or present, do you think would be the most fun (not necessarily the most profitable) to participate on as a contestant?
12 The Price is Right
6 Jeopardy!
5 Let’s Make a Deal
4 Press Your Luck
3 American Gladiators
2 Dating Game
2 Family Feud
2 Match game
2 Wheel of Fortune
Dog eat Dog
Survivor
What's My Line
Deal or No Deal
Password
Millionarie
Double Dare
Solid split again – and again it’s Jeopardy! taking a back seat to TPIR. I have no idea if people really believe TPIR would be fun to play, or if this was just an echo from question #1, thinking TPIR is **the** iconic game show, and is just the correct answer to any IWS question calling for a game show to be named. Either way, winnah.
5. Name something, other than cash or a car, that is commonly used as a sort of "grand prize" for a game show.
43 trip
furniture
jet ski
Okay, let me be clear. I think there is a role for the “eliminator” style of question. It’s healthy to have a pretty clear winner mixed into a good set of IWS questions, where you can make a clear distinction between good answers and not. That’s fine – but this went way too far. Eliminating two entries was a waste of a question – this would have been a decent question had I just included trip/vacation on the “other than…” list. **sigh**
6. You're sitting down with a half hour to kill, and you turn to the Game Show network. What "vintage" game show do you hope they are showing?
13 Press Your Luck
10 Match Game
6 The Price is Right
4 Family Feud
2 Let’s Make a Deal
2 Hollywood Squares
2 Pyramid
Newlywed Game
Jeopardy!
Love Connection
Tic Tac Dough
Dating Game
Gong Show
I tried to make this question more personal… to avoid, if nothing else, just another list of answers to the question “name a game show.” And, I think it succeeded. I honestly had no idea the power of the whammy, I would have missed here.
Scoring results to come…
