Anyone been in one of their stores lately?
Is it just me or are they completely inundated with old crap and it's looking more and more like a garage sale? It's a bit like the way CompUSA started to look when they started their slide. I understand that Gamestop generally has a corner on the resale/trade market but I think someone at the top needs to see what's happening. Just ask Starbucks.

Looks the same as it always has to me.

Same here with the exception that PC shelf space continues to shrink.

I agree, though I always felt the place looked a little like a garage sale, so that wouldn't be any different.

I often buy the older games. Why spend $60 for a game when I can pay $20 and get the same amount of enjoyment

I don't know, the ones near me have a bit of a "garage sale" feel with all the bins for the used games, but as they're the only place to buy games around here that isn't Best Buy or Circuit City (and is the only real place for used games), I'll continue to put up with it. There's one near me that I don't go to because one of the clerks is an absolute drip.

I agree. Sometimes I peek in one during my lunch hour, but the odds of me buying something there are so slim. It'd hafta be cheap cheap cheap and in-stock, two things which aren't likely IMO.

I do this too. I tend to run...6-8 months behind the cycle on games. That way the price has dropped and bugs may be ironed out. There are exceptions (TotalWar, FM, text sims), but generally that's the case.

Kinda wondering that myself. (??)

The stores always look like dumps, but the main reason I avoid them is because I don't like being asked if I want to preorder a half-dozen different games or buy "disc insurance." Please, just take my money in silence like at any other store.

Starbucks went through their stage where their stores had EVERYTHING in them, from board games, to movies (Akeela and the Bee), etc. They just kept trying to bring things under their umbrella of brans but took their eye off the ball....hence the big attempt at a turnaround right now by Schulz(sp?).

As a former CompUSA employee, I take offense to this. I don't see overpriced HD TV's or microwaves at Gamespot yet. :)

I used to really like Babbages before Gamespot went around and bought them up when they went chapter 11. I used to like the egghead software stores as well. I guess there is just no room for computer only stores anymore.

I've noticed the quantity of douchebag employees at Gamestop stores has gone up considerably the last few years.

I love to do this. Hell, I rarely pay more than $20 for a game these days because I have such a backlog. I just wait for the new stuff to drop and scoop it up 6 months or a year later for a third the cost.

I think the honest answer there is "once their skyrocketing growth trend stopped, their stock took a tumble." And the real underlying question here is likely whether GameStop is still a good equity investment - it has been on a lot of "buy" lists for a while, but has suffered the last few months (along with a lot of others).

That's true but I was actually talking about the presentation of their stores. IMO Starbucks started to make their shelves overwhelming and somewhat disconnected which I am pointing out that all of the bins at GS seem to be equaling the same thing to me. The displays on the walls and marketing in the stores is a bit overwhelming and there is just seeming to be shit everywhere. what you mention about the stock is true but I was commenting on what is actually tangible...to me at least in the store.

Our local Gamestop (they recently dropped the Electronics Boutique name) is in decent shape for the most part. They have all the used Gameboy games in a nice little cabinet and all the used console games in the shelves with the rest. I don't see the used consoles and whatnot just laying about.
I hate shopping here, but it was the only place I could find the Gameboy Ruby Red Pokemon game and it was selling for $35 (hard to find) which is the same as the new Diamond and Pearl DS games.
It may just be me, but I hate when they open the boxes and remove the games leaving just the empty box on the shelf. I like my new shit untouched before I purchase.
I've only purchased 1 used game from them (see above). I don't know why but I have an aversion to it which seems unfounded. I hate paying full retail for games I know I'll probably just let rot on a shelf after a week or so. Lately, I've been waiting for the Platinum (or gold) version of games to come out but still buying them new.

I did find it odd that Starbucks was selling board games. Did they stop that? I never really noticed but I can't recall seeing any the last few times I've been to one. I liked that they were selling over-priced water bottles made of #7 recycled plastic at the last one I went to, that was classy. "Here, pay twice what you should for a water bottle, and if you value your health, don't reuse it."

Perhaps this isn't a thing in the US, but there was a big to-do here in Canada a few months back because some study or something said that people shouldn't be re-using those Nalgene-style water bottles if they were made of #7 plastic. Some stores like MEC even had programs where you could return bottles you'd purchased from them and get credit towards aluminum ones.

Yeah, those plastic water bottles are supposed to be pretty bad for you.

This is the reason I stopped buying games there, unless it is a pre-order. If I am buying without a pre-order, I buy at Best Buy.

Gamestop sucks. I miss the old Electronics Boutique stores that had nothing but Commodore/PC Games.

I cannot stand stepping foot in Gamestop. I don't know why anyone would buy anything from there - it's too crowded, the games have already been opened, I hate being asked if I want to pre-order something, it's always extremely slow checking out, etc. Yuck.
I much prefer to shop at a big retailer like Best Buy.

Me too. I just checked the bottom of my Nalgene. It has a "1" on it, not a "7". I think that's safe.

I find my local Gamestop checkout to be MUCH faster than my local Best Buy checkout, and it is the main reason I do shop at Gamestop. Also, I like the manager who is knowledgable and funny.

I think it varies from store to store. I haven't had many issues either. I usually go there looking for an old game and I'm usually in and out pretty quickly.

For those that don't mind going into a GameStop, it appears that they're having a clearance sale on new games. Here's the list of games per CAG..........
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183345
All merchandise is sold as NEW, so Edge cards cannot apply. Please note that there is a higher chance your item may be gutted. Some games, like Katamari Damacy, are being reprinted for this sale.
Some of these will be in very high demand (esp the $5 UMDs), so it's best you get there ASAP on the first day of the sale.
