Now sure how fun Techmo Bowl would be, but Tecmo Bowl could be good.

I never played Tecmo Bowl when I was a kid on my NES, and I'll be the first to say that Madden is too darn complicated for me. But after reading the above-linked review, I think I might buy this one, it looks simple enough for a football dummy like me.

Lack of career mode is disappointing and I'm now thoroughly pissed off at EA's exclusive license, because it's going to be annoying having to edit all 32 teams properly.
