Apparently a 100,000 gallon tank was struck by lighting and has exploded. Video is quite impressive. Reports are that there were 15,000 gallons in it at the time, but that may or may not be correct. People several miles away can feel the heat from the flames. The tank is overflowing with gas but so far the levee is holding. Other tanks are nearby and they are hoping the fire will not spread.

Oh, and flood waters are apparently approaching the top of Brush Creek, which goes through the Country Club Plaza, our famous live/work/play center. Rough night for KC.

What part of KC is the tanker on fire in? I was in KC for Memorial Day weekend for my first time. I did not get out much but stayed in Overland Park and coached soccer in Lee's Summit.

Traders should have fun with this to push prices back to $130 a barrel on pure speculation

It's in Kansas City, Kansas just across the state line from Downtown KC. It's really close to the GM plant and not that far from the Downtown Airport.

Yeah, especially since the company that owns it is now confirming the tank is much larger than earlier reported -- 2.4 million gallons of gasoline are going up in flames. They have to let it burn out since they can't spray water on it. They are hoping they can contain it and it won't spread to one of the other 2.4 million gallon tanks. Yikes. Wouldn't be surprised if gas spiked locally tomorrow for sure since we've obviously lost supply and capacity tonight.

Considering how valuable gas is these days, what's one tanker doing carrying approx 9.6M (retail) of inventory?

Dola. Ignore my last message, I'm an idiot. I'm thinking of a tanker carrying gas down the road, not a stationary tank, which is what I'm now assuming this is.

Considering how valuable gas is these days, what's one tanker doing carrying approx 9.6M (retail) of inventory? It's a pipeline storage facility that apparently is a transportation hub for a pretty wide area around Kansas City. Looking at Google Maps, it looks like there are six larger storage tanks (this is one of them) and some smaller tanks. But I know the place also stores LP gas and other petroleum products.

There are now conflicting reports about the 2.4 million gallons though. Company spokesman says the tank reading was 28,000 barrels of gas in the tank when it exploded, which would be just under 1.2 million gallons.

They have now closed the main runway of the downtown airport due to the smoke.

Sucker's still burning awfully well this morning. I'm about 10 miles away and could still see a pretty healthy orange glow on the way to work. Still a pretty impressive smoke plume as well.

Darn! I missed that. Yeah, I was amazed that it didn't have more of an impact. The GM plant kept going -- did they ever finally close the downtown airport?

I couldn't see the glow of the fire but I could see the smoke plume this morning from Liberty. It was an impressive show.

And it looks like the higher number was correct -- I've been hearing 58,000 barrels of oil today, which would be 2.4 million gallons. Between that, the tank and the cleanup, that's probably a $25 million-plus bolt of lightning.

Why you think they kicked all those news reporters off the gm lots chief.. they didn't want family members of people working there to freak out about how close that fire actually was. One of my neighbor's works down there and his wife was up at my house panicky.. talking to my wife about it.. I was not shocked at them making them stay and work through that.. i bet their day shift couldnt' get into work though

I only made it to Shawnee today so I didn't see the fire but it sounds a lot like that chemical plant fire last winter in terms of being able to see it for miles.

Can we confirm that this is actually on fire in KC, or if there is merely heavy media speculation about it being on fire in KC, inevitably leading us to discover in 6 months that it was not actually on fire in KC, just rumored.

I was at CommunityAmerica Ballpark last night and could see it from there. We're on hour 38 of the burn right now, and they now think it will burn itself out by noon.

Prices have held though and the rest of the facility is now open.

I saw the wisps of smoke above it this morning.

Now some more storms just in time for another big lightning strike ;)
