This is getting some talk back from where I'm from as a local team that I wanna say were a 10 seed made it to the semi-finals of the state tournament and got to play Highland, whose starting pitcher was drafted 32nd by the Brewers. There was a huge call made against Crystal Lake Central where the umpire said the batter did not make an attempt to avoid being hit by a pitch. It was the top of the 5th, with the bases loaded in a scoreless game. Here's the video of the pitch: http://www.mchenrycountysports.com/multimedia/videoplayer.php?id=clchitbypitch/

Looks like the right call to me.

I umpire youth baseball, including many youth baseball world series. I think it is a terrible call. He clearly moved away from the plate and then got hit with the pitch. He made an attempt to get out the way. It was just a lousy call.
What was the final score of the game?

I've umpired and coached a lot of high school ball. It LOOKS like he tried to get out of the way, BUT that's a really bad angle to tell if he moved away from the ball or not.

On another note, us Brewer fans are pretty excited about this kid from Highland.

It looks to me like the kid raises his arm slightly to get into the plane of the pitch - that if he had just stood still the ball would have missed him. It is very hard to tell, though. When I was playing high school, I had that call go against me at least a couple of times (I used to get hbp a lot).

Hate the call.

Also, looks like the winning run was due to two throwing errors on a stolen base attempt...that hurts even more than the botched HBP call, IMO.

One of my teammates in high school got hit by a pitch 3 times during one at-bat. Everytime, the ump made him stay at the plate.
