View Full Version : If you could pick one band to get back together?

Who would it be. I am talking in terms of bands that have broken up like Van Halen, Soundgarden, etc... Not bands like the beatles that kind of ran their course.

For me it would be Rage against the Machine

easy, it's my thread.

but to answer your question, the spirit of it is more geared towards bands that split up before their time.

Not sure how you can say the Beatles ran their course. They actually broke up prematurely in my opinion. Had it not been for the constant in fighting and interference by certain band members wives, The Beatles would have been together well into the 70s. I say that because, many of the Beatles solo albums were basically Beatles albums with one member missing (usually McCartney), being replaced by Eric Clapton and others.

My vote is for The Beatles.

Edit: Regardless if it's your thread or not ;)

I would agree with My Bloody Valentine, except that Kevin Shields' solo-stuff--what little there is of it--sounds a lot like MBV.

Let's face it--whenever bands reunite, listeners usually wind up wishing that they hadn't. (Echo and the Bunnymen, I am looking at you.) At least The Pixies had the good sense not to write any new music, just to play the old stuff.

I didn't actually know that his solo stuff was available. I remember hearing that his demos were really awful and would probably never be released.

Husker Du is also a good call. So is The Smiths--talk about the whole being greater than the sum of its parts!

Are we talking reuniting to play live, or reuniting to write new music, or what? Because if we're talking the latter, I find it hilarious that you would slag on the Beatles for "running their course" when RATM had pretty much exhausted every variation on the limited theme they had by the time they called it quits.

Same deal with one of my favorite bands - Kyuss. And I loved Kyuss - but seriously, they pretty much ran out of new ways to write the same songs after 4 albums or so, and that was it.

Anyway, I'm going with "band I'd want to see reunited to write new music" and pick (what surprise!) Jellyfish.

It was cool in the late '80s when both Peter Cetera and Chicago were churning out good material apart, but we would have all been better served if they had gotten back together in 1995. Unlike The Eagles, The Police, Genesis and other bands that seemed to have been able to put aside their
differences in exchange for big paychecks, Cetera and Chicago seemed destined to allow each other to burn in hell before reuniting.

I also wouldn't have mind seeing Peter Wolf and The J. Geils Band get back together. Coincidentally, Wolf produced Chicago's Stone of Sissyphus album in the mid-90s that will be released for the first time next week. Guess we'll see if it was really any good or not.

Journey an Styx are another couple of bands from my younger days that would be nice to see together.

And if we're resurrecting the dead, I'll go with The Beatles and The Doors.

because the beattles produced HUNDREDS of songs.

I though I was clear about the spirit of the excersise yet 73 post later you feel the need to comment.

Basicly the beattles suck. I respect them for what they did for music, much like Nirvana, who also sucks BTW, but I find the beattles to be extemly sub-par muscians and their songs are just down right annoying.

Agreed. Sorry. I was reading the whole post and preparing a reply when I reached your heretical comment about the Beatles and Nirvana. It was a disappointing comment because I also like RATM and I was internally debating whether I would vote for the them or Sleater Kinney.
For the record, I would go with Sleater Kinney because I'm not sure RATM could recreate the magic, and all we'd get would be a Michael-Jordan-on-the-Wizards effort, since they'd plateaued with Battle of LA, whereas I think S-K was still ascending with the Woods.

But didnt they "run their course", or are you specifically referring to with Duane?
Interestingly enough, while many (myself included) prefer the earliest stuff, they had little to no success with Duane fronting.

BTW, other than the "Southern Rock" label ABB has nothing in common with Skynyrd. ABB was a delta blues, hillbilly rock influenced collaboration. Skynyrd was more of a pure rock, disestablishment influenced product of the South.
