View Full Version : What Better?? Kevin Arnold's Girlfriends

Most of us grew up watching the Wonder Years and I'm willing to even bet a few of us even got our first boners from one of Kevin's girlfriends. That being said when you were younger which one did you think was the best!?!?!
http://www.visualeditors.com/apple/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/070104winniecooper.jpg
Winnie Cooper - Kevin's main love interest. In an episode entitled "The Accident" and in the final episode, it is stated that every important event in Kevin's life somehow involves Winnie. She lives on the same block as Kevin. Their first kiss and her older brother's death while serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War play an important part of the pilot episode. In one episode, her parents separate over their grief of the death of their son. In the epilogue of the final episode, it is revealed that Winnie goes on to study art history in Paris. Kevin and Winnie write a letter to each other every week for eight years until she returned. Despite their life-long romance, they never married and end up living separate lives.
http://mytwyyearbook.tripod.com/pix/10skate.jpg
Becky Slater - Kevin's junior high school classmate and one-time girlfriend. He dates her purely to make Winnie jealous and she punches him when she finds out he still likes Winnie. She holds a grudge against Kevin and becomes a recurring nuisance throughout junior high school. Her character is physically aggressive and hostile towards men.
http://mytwyyearbook.tripod.com/pix/48madeline3.jpg
Madeline Adams: Kevin's temporary flame during his final year in junior high.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Arc/7537/arnold/kevin/cara3.jpg
Cara - Kevin's summer romance while vacationing with his family at a lake. He meets her before he begins high school and returns to see her after getting his driver's license.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Arc/7537/arnold/kevin/lisab.jpg
Lisa Berlini - Kevin went to a dance with her.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Arc/7537/arnold/kevin/terikev.jpg
Teri - A girl Kevin had met at Ocean City that summer in 1969.
Side note: Becky and Winnie are sisters IRL

Kevin Arnold and I shared the same grade levels in the same years (excepting decades, of course), so I had a decent crush on Winnie until, as time passed, she became more and more a blank slate onscreen -- no redeeming characteristics and generally just serving as a conflict device. However, that minx Madeline was the hottest ticket in town.

Aww man, what a joy to come home and see this thread. To me, it comes down to two girls: Winnie and Madeline. Despite the first (and last) love, the thing that kicks Winnie up is my favorite episode where Kevin tells her he loves her. Only time he had done that, iirc. But I also believe he had a real hard on for Madeline until he told her to fuck off, another one of my favorite episode. A little while ago, I did watch the whole first episode on YouTube but I don't know if it's still there.

This is a show that should be on DVD but as I understand it, musical copyrights are in the way of just about everything. It's sad to think this show will never see DVD unless it dumps the music but unfortunately, that music is essential to the show.

Madeline and it's not even close.
You forgot to put Detweiler's daughter in, though I think she only appeared in one episode at the company picnic.
Now that said, you can make a case for Winnie. Attractive in an unusual way, first love, first kiss and all that.. and absolutely smizzokin' in a red Christmas fairy outfit (the snow-globe thing after Paul said, "Why get her more of what she already has?" Haha I love that episode even more after working at VS)
I soooo empathize with the stress out sitting by the phone wrestling with whether or not to call Lisa Berlini. She was hot, but not much personality to her from what I can remember. Man, Wayne was a dick.
Teri's an interesting case. There's just something enchanting about those summertime romances, especially when you throw in the whole water equation. In fact, I'd argue in some ways that Kevin had an even greater connection with her than he did Winnie... and there's just something about that eyes.
Becky Slater I had a love/hate relationship with her. There were times I could actually get to like her, but then I'd want to punch the hell out of her because she was such a -bitch-.
Don't remember Cara at all.
Good joke option: Marquet Farquar. Mother of six. Friend to bats. "SECRET FRIENDS?!"

I've noticed though that the bootlong series DVDs seem to be edited.
Like, they cut stuff out of episodes, though I think it may have been the Canadian broadcast they did that?
I remember distinctly the one episode where Kirk and Winnie are fighting and it's choir practice and Winnie gives "This was no I'm glad we're still friends look. This was Tony, Tony take me I'm yours!" look and Kevin thinks it's him until Paul taps him on the shoulder and points to the door where Kirk's holding the sign that says "I'm sorry Winnie."
There was some dialogue that got cut in that scene in the bootleg series DVDs I got cut (I didn't know it was illegal when I got it off ebay).
"Geez! What's wrong with you kids? You forget how to sing since yesterday?! All right, let's try something a little easier. Page 53. West Side Story."

The finale made me almost as sad as when Hawkeye and B.J. try to say goodbye in the final episode of M*A*S*H. :(
I was always one to fall hard when I really liked a girl. I tended to put them on pedestals. Winnie is Kevin's "girl who got away." I had a couple of those, so I can really sympathize with him. You love the girl who you end up with in the end, but you never forget those special girls from along the way.

That math teacher episode is one of my favorite's if not my favorite. That whole story line was great in the way it came full circle to where it started with his final line to the principal compared to his first line to Mr. Collins.
Sorry for bringing this up again but I got out my tapes last night and watched a number of episodes, including this one. It really is a testament of how perfectly this show and episode were scripted, acted and of course, narrated. But as many fans noted, it was also the great choice of music throughout. By the end of this particular episode, if you are not already crying, you will be when Linda Ronstadt's (or Karla Bonoff's) Goodbye My Friend starts right at the perfect time.

Along the lines with Buc's comments...I was watching some Wonder Years this weekend and it was an episode about Buster, the family dog. The last quote of the episode always brings tears to my eyes because I had recently just lost the dog that grew up with me last year and the quote pretty much sums him up.
Every American family has its own unique blend of personalities, my family was no exception. Within our four suburban walls we ranged the full spectrum of types. From the flamboyant, to the demure. From the repellant, to the ideal. Somehow, we managed to fit together in a kind of fragile alliance. One for all, and all for one. With one exception: Buster - the family dog.
And over the years, through good times and bad... through seasons of hope and change, he stood by us all. A silent partner. The first one to greet me at the door when I came home from my senior prom. The one who stared out our front window, on the day I left for college. And my mom said he stayed there for hours.

I'm even stronger of the opinion that Teri was the ideal girl for Kevin as I'm reviewing old episodes. I think Madeline was way too far out of his league, and he subconsciously recognized that so he very stupidly rejected her. Winnie ran way too damn hot and cold.
I need to put my ranking list together at some point. One site I ran across listed Linda Sloane as #1, and while I see the argument, I'm like no fucking way. She was so deep in the friends zone, she was never getting out.
