Taking care of leather couches

I was going to buy a leather couch, and was wondering if anyone has experience with them? I was told you can spray some protectant on them, but you don't have to. How do you clean them? Do they get ripped or worn fast?

We've had leather furniture for about 5 years now. IMO its very easy to take care. We never used any protectant and just wipe them with a damp cloth when something spills on it. One of our cat has even peed on the love seat a couple times and it was really easy to clean up with no lingering odor.
